Robert Lee Frost was born on March 26,1874 in San Francisco,California. Frost attended Dartmouth College after graduating from high school in 1892.In 1894 his first poem, titled My Butterfly: An Elegy, was published in The Independent. Robert Frost went on to attend Harvard University in 1897 after marrying his wife Elinor in 1895.He left university due to health concerns, and moved to a farm in New Hampshire.
The time spent on his farm in New Hampshire, where he tried to work the land, make a life, and provide for his family, was very hard for Robert Frost, his wife and children. However,Frost came to respect rural life and grew appreciation for what those living around him went through. Because he so intimately knew rural country life,he was able to master describing it through prose(散文).These experiences on the farm inspired many of his well-known pieces of poetry, including The Tufts of Flowers and The Trial by Existence, both of which were published in 1906.
It was when Robert Frost decided to sell his farm in 1912 and move to England that he found publishers who were willing to shine a light on his poetry, something that was tough for a new poet to do in America. His first book of poems, A Boy's Will, was published only a few months after his arrival in England, and North of Boston was published a year afterward.
By the time when Robert Frost made it back to his home country of America, he had built a solid career and reputation in England and was able to further his success. His standing allowed him to connect with influential publishers, such as Henry Holt, and get his poetry out into the hands of the American people. In 1916, Frost published Mountain Interval, which contained poems and stories he had written during his stay in England.
Robert Frost died on January 29,1963 in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 88. Before passing away, Robert Frost was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poems and contributions to American literature.
4. Why did Frost leave Harvard University?A.Because he was eager for the country life. |
B.Because he had a large family to support. |
C.Because he developed some health problems. |
D.Because he had to manage his farm in New Hampshire. |
A.His familiarity with country life. |
B.His hardship on his farm. |
C.His experiences in England. |

British anthropologists Russell Hill and Robert Barton of the University of Durham, after studying the results of one-on-one boxing, taekwondo, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling matches at the Olympic Games, conclude that when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win.
Hill and Barton report that when one competitor is much better than the other, colour has no effect on the result. However, when there is only a small difference between them, the effect of colour is enough to tip the balance. The anthropologists say that the number of times red wins is not simply by chance, but that these results are statistically significant.
Joanna Setchell, a primate (灵长目动物) researcher at the University of Cambridge, has found similar results in nature. She studies the large African monkeys known as mandrills. Mandrills have bright red noses that stand out against their white faces. Setchell’s work shows that the powerful males—the ones who are more successful with females—have a brighter red nose than other males.
As well as the studies on primates by Setchell, another study shows the effect of red among birds. In an experiment, scientists put red plastic tings on the legs of male zebra finches and this increased the birds’ success with female zebra finches. Zebra finches already have bright red beaks (鸟喙), so this study suggests that, as with Olympic athletes, an extra flash of red is significant. In fact, researchers from the University of Glasgow say that the birds’ brightly coloured beaks are an indicator of health. Jonathan Blount, a biologist, and his colleagues think they have found proof that bright red or orange beaks attract females because they mean that the males are healthier. Nothing in nature is simple, however, because in species such as the blue footed booby, a completely different colour seems to give the male birds the same advantage with females.
Meanwhile, what about those athletes who win in their events while wearing red? Do their clothes give them an unintentional advantage? Robert Barton accepts that “that is the implication” of their findings. Is it time for sports authorities to consider new regulations on sports clothing?
8. According to their research, Hill and Barton conclude that ___________.A.the colour of clothing has an effect on most sport events |
B.red should be the choice of colour for clothing in sports |
C.red plays a role when competitors are equally capable |
D.athletes perform better when surrounded by bright red |
A.achieve | B.seek |
C.keep | D.change |
A.male birds use different body parts to draw attention |
B.red is not the only colour to attract female birds |
C.blue gives female birds the same advantage |
D.blue can indicate how healthy a bird is |
George Aldrich, whose official title is chemical specialist, works at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. He uses his nose to protect astronauts from unpleasant or harmful odors (气味). His near four-decade career has involved smelling objects from technical handbooks to astronauts’ personal things.
It’s crucial that all items taken aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are odorless. Since astronauts are allowed to bring personal items aboard, all their objects must be smell-checked before leaving Earth. In a video provided by Science Channel, Aldrich relates one specific occasion when an astronaut wanted to build a ship in a bottle in space. Everything in the ship-building process had to be sniffed—right down to the glue.
Aldrich and his team are responsible for making sure that objects are not only odorless but also harmless to astronauts. When the ISS heats up, a process called off-gassing occurs, which means chemicals flow out from certain substances (物质). Objects that would be safe on Earth could give off unpleasant odors or become dangerous when exposed to high temperatures in the ISS’s unique environment.
Of course, humans aren’t the only testers or the first to be exposed to potentially dangerous objects. Before Aldrich sticks his nose into a substance, it has been examined by machines. Even though machines can detect unsafe substances, computers cannot tell exactly how things smell to humans. While something could be technically fine, it could be smelly to an astronaut.
Aldrich’s nose is not alone there. He is the head of a hard-sniffing team of smell testers. Together they smell each object and rate it on a scale (等级) of 1 to 4. According to NASA, 1 cannot be detected, and 4 is considered not bearable. After the scientists conclude their tests, the scores are averaged. If an item is rated more than 2.4 on the scale, it fails the test and is not allowed on the flight.
11. Which can describe the smell check from Paragraph 2?A.Quite dangerous. | B.Extremely strict |
C.Rather boring. | D.Very complex. |
A.Negative emotions. | B.Odor-related disease. |
C.The off-gassing process. | D.Changes in temperature. |
A.Using machines to test objects. |
B.Having a meeting to make the scale. |
C.Using computers to examine their noses. |
D.Listing potentially dangerous substances. |
A.An unusual smell tester. |
B.Astronauts’ life at the ISS. |
C.Strong odors in a spaceship. |
