Lynn Colwell is a mixed-media artist in Redmond, Washington. In grade school, a teacher told her that she had no artistic talent and Lynn believed her. However, in 2015 when she retired, she hoped to have a new interest and began to take a year-long online painting class.
“It blew me away,” she says. She started painting striking portraits of women’s faces, combined with short messages of hope almost every day. In five years, she’s completed about 1,000 paintings.
Lynn gives her paintings away. She started with friends, but that only went so far. Then she read about a movement called Art Abandonment, which encourages artists to leave their art in public places for anyone to pick up. That gave her the idea of putting her work into the hands of strangers through Facebook.
Nearly every day, Lynn posts a painting on her Facebook page. The first person who responds saying they're interested in it has 24 hours to make a donation of $25 or more to their favorite nonprofit or an individual in need. Then the painting is theirs. Lynn doesn’t ask for proof(证明).She trusts(相信)that the people who want her paintings share her ideas.
Five years later, she’s still amazed at the results. Her paintings have raised more than $57,000 for nonprofits such as animal rescue centers, homeless shelters as well as for people who have lost their jobs. Sometimes Lynn hears that a painting helped someone at the moment they needed it most. “That gives me chills,” she says.
To be a part of Lynn Colwell’s art-for-a-cause effort, send her a friend request at facebook.com/lynncolwell. Then keep an eye out for a painting that speaks to you. Lynn personally approves each request, so she asks for your patience. Also, she spends most of her time in her art studio一there’s painting to be done. “I wake up every day and can’t wait to get started,” she says.

In Ghana, hundreds of schoolchildren are excited to go back to school, on their bamboo bikes. But these hikes aren’t just a green way of getting to classes; they are making a world of difference to students who may have not reached their schools.

A ship that’s been frozen into the Arctic ice for the last year has finally returned home. After nearly 13 months, the researchers have gathered more detailed information on the Arctic than ever before. Much of the news is troubling.
The German ship RV Polarstern is normally designed to break a passage through ice. But last September, the ship set sail from Norway with the goal of getting frozen into the Arctic ice cap for a year. The mission was part of a $155 million project known as MOSAiC, whose goal is to learn more about the ice that forms near the North Pole and how it’s affected by climate change.
By last October, the ship had been frozen into the Arctic ice north of Siberia. Over the next year, more than 300 scientists from 20 different countries spent time on the boat, doing long-term research on the ice, over the ice, and under the ice. The boat held about 100 scientists and other workers at a time. The plan was for members of the team to be exchanged regularly.
The project leaders knew there would be many challenges related to the extreme cold, the ice, and even polar bears. But the team hadn’t planned on the coronavirus, which, for a time, made it impossible to swap out team members. That was one time the isolation helped, though, since the people on the Polarstern didn’t have to worry about catching the virus.
At the end of July, the team collected all of their gear from the ice, just before the ice was frozen. In September, the boat left the ice cap, finally returning to Germany on Monday. However, the news that the researchers bring back isn’t good.

Rakesh lives with his wife. He used a train early morning for work and came back late at night. The two were happy with their lives although they had to struggle to make their ends meet. But suddenly, Rakesh lost his job. Staying at home throughout the day was getting tougher for Rakesh. Although Reena, his wife tried her best to deal with his mood swings and frustrations, they often ended up having an argument.
To find his comfort, Rakesh continued leaving his house every morning just the way he used to do for going at work. He hoarded the same train and got down at the same station where his former workplace was. Again he used to come back at the end of the day. Reena used to make food for him, knowing that he would not appreciate a bit of it. He had forgotten to love her; he no longer understood her sacrifices(牺牲).Rakesh was being more difficult with every passing day.
One day, when Rakesh boarded the train, he saw a man in formal shirt and trousers reading a newspaper on a seat. Beside him was a pretty young lady knitting(编织)a sweater. It seemed that the two were together, but they didn’t speak a word. They traveled till their station came almost an hour later. Rakesh saw both of them getting down. The next day, this was repeated. This went on for about three months.
One day, Rakesh boarded the train. But his eyes were constantly searching for something. He saw that man standing near the door. But where was that lady who used to be there with him? Few more days went by. But the lady couldn’t be seen.
Rakesh couldn’t hold back his curiousness. He went up and asked. The man said, “She was my wife. She died two weeks ago. She was battling cancer. The doctors had told her that she didn’t have much time left and she needed rest. But she determined to spend as much time with me as she could. Although I asked her to have a rest; she used to come with me till my office just to spend an extra hour with me every day.”
