Skeptics are strange a lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of the human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.

Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry–funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.

So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”

Such one–sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible”.

A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.

1. Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book?
A.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.
B.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.
C.Industry-funded media present confusing information.
D.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.
2. The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to _____.
A.voice a different opinion
B.find fault with Lomborg’s book
C.point out the value of scientific views
D.challenge the authority of the media
3. What does the underlined word “informed” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.wrongB.reliableC.wiseD.careless
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To warn the public of the danger of half-blindness with reviews.
B.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.
C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in information.
D.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.

1】Sixteen miles off the coast of northern Scotland, the future of green energy is taking shape. The five giant turbines (涡轮机) of the Hywind Scotland wind farm look much like any other off-shore wind project, except one major difference — they’re floating.

While traditional offshore turbines sit on metal and concrete towers fixed into the seabed, Hywind’s turbines rest on floating frames that move up and down with the waves. It proves to be an important development as the world struggles to meet the net zero carbon emission (排放) targets set in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

To cut those emissions, green electricity will need to be at the main source of global energy, according to the International Energy Agency. It says that by 2040, half of the world’s energy needs will have to be met by electricity produced in a net zero way. Projects like Hywind’s floating wind farm offer a picture of what the future could look like.

The reasons for this can be listed as follows. Firstly, unlike fixed units, floating turbines can operate in deep waters far from the shoreline, where winds tend to be stronger. Secondly, it can serve offshore areas that are too deep for bottom-fixed turbines. “In places like Korea, Japan and California, you can only manage a certain amount of offshore wind, or maybe even none at all, so floating turbines are the only option in the longer term,” explains Henrik Steisdal, a Danish inventor at the forefront of floating wind innovation.

While floating turbines overcome some of the problems that make offshore wind farms in deep waters impossible, there are still challenges that have to be overcome. There are some concerns about what effect floating wind turbines might have on the sea environment. The price of floating wind projects is also still high — almost twice as much as that of the bottom-fixed offshore ones. Another problem is how to avoid the risk of a system breakdown when the wind is blowing too hard.

1. What do the Hywind’s turbines and the traditional turbines have in common?
A.They are fixed.B.They use wind.
C.They are floating.D.They use waves.
2. What’s NOT the reason for building floating turbines?
A.It offers a picture of the future.
B.Winds are stronger in deep waters.
C.It helps meet the net zero carbon emission targets.
D.It is difficult to fix turbines in deep offshore areas.
3. What will possibly be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Solutions to the problems.
B.Functions of the wind power.
C.Advantages of the floating project.
D.Opinions on the floating turbines.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Wind Projects — a Greener World
B.Wind Projects — a Practical Solution
C.Floating Turbines — a Choice for the Future
D.Floating Turbines — a More Efficient World

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了奥扎克的树木被砍伐以恢复一种草原生态系统,指出气候和生物多样性危机是需要共同解决的问题。

【推荐2】Five years ago, we cut nearly every single tree across 19 acres here, piled and burned the branches and left the trunks where they lay. The goal was to restore one of the Ozarks’ rarest ecosystems, a type of dry and rocky grassland.

Logging down trees to bring back grass may seem puzzling in a time of climate change, as forest conservation and tree planting have become popular ways to keep carbon out of the atmosphere. But it is exactly what we should do in some parts of the Southeast. The climate and biodiversity crises are problems to be solved together. We can’t afford to rob biodiversity to pay for the climate. And grasslands are surprisingly good at pulling carbon out of the atmosphere. A single sunflower might not be the carbon grab that an oak tree is, but grass’s deep root systems store the element deep underground, where it can take hundreds or thousands of years to return to the atmosphere.

For the past century, the commonly held belief was that forests once covered most of the region from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. But we now know that’s not true. Much of the Southeast was a string of large and small grassland ecosystems with enormous biodiversity. All of these unique grasslands are under threat, but not all by tree invasion. The few remaining grasslands in Arkansas are being converted to grow rice, Virginia grasslands are being flattened by housing developers, and low-lying coastal grassy plain is facing sea-level rise. Because grasslands are so easily navigated (导航) and settled, they may be the most threatened ecosystems in the world.

And it’s obvious that everywhere, grasslands remain undervalued. Many conservation organizations working in the Southeast are still focused on tree planting and preserving existing forests. The Nature Conservancy’s Cumberland Forest Project covers 253, 000 acres of land in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, part of an effort to store carbon and create continuous habitats for species migration during climate change. In fact, recent laws are beginning to lead us in the right direction.

1. Why were the trees cut down in Ozarks?
A.To take in more carbon.B.To regain its grassland.
C.To create a new ecosystem.D.To deal with climate change.
2. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A.The reasons for grasslands reduction.B.The purpose of cutting down trees.
C.The changes of ecosystems.D.The result of tree invasion.
3. What is presented about grasslands in the Southeast?
A.Grasslands are greatly valued.B.Carbon can be broken down by grasslands.
C.Forests took up more region than grasslands.D.All the grasslands are not threatened by trees.
4. What might the author continue talking about?
A.The importance of grasslands.B.The influence of planting trees.
C.The measures of restoring grasslands.D.The present situation of the Southeast.

【推荐3】With environmentalists pointing to the use of coal, oil and other fossil fuels as adding to the problem of global warming, the world is rushing to find other more environmentally friendly energy sources. Many countries are looking to nuclear power as the answer to their energy needs. Those who support using nuclear power point to the fact that the process for creating nuclear power produces huge quantities of electricity without producing any greenhouse gases. It seems to be the safest and most environmentally safe method for producing the largest amount of power, much more than solar or wind energy sources.

However, despite the many advantages of nuclear power, there are many groups who strongly advise against the use of nuclear power. Some groups point to concerns about possible terrorist attacks on nuclear plants or possible nuclear accidents that might result in widespread disaster. However, strange as it seems, many of the strongest voices against nuclear power are actually environmentalists, who oppose nuclear power because they claim it results in more greenhouse gases.

It may seem impossible, but in fact both facts are true: nuclear production itself produces no greenhouse gases, but nuclear power does, in fact, lead to the production of many greenhouse gases. How is this possible? The actual production of nuclear power does not let off any greenhouse gases at all; this is the fact that most governments and nuclear power companies point to, and it is, indeed, correct. However, those who oppose nuclear power point out the bigger problem: building and maintaining the nuclear power stations, mining the material used to produce the nuclear power and getting rid of the nuclear waste all create greenhouse gases, the very thing that nuclear power is supposed to avoid. The final point that environmentalists point out is that nuclear power is not a long-term solution to energy. One day uranium, the resource needed for producing nuclear power, will be at an end, the same problem the world is facing with coal and oil today.

1. What are many countries relying on to satisfy their energy needs according to the passage?
A.Coal.B.Oil.
C.Nuclear power.D.Other fossil fuels.
2. What disadvantages relating to the use of nuclear power are mentioned in the passage?
A.No greenhouse gases.
B.Killing more plants.
C.Widespread disasters and more greenhouse gases.
D.Making other energy sources not function well.
3. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the use of nuclear power?
A.Optimistic.B.Indifferent(漠不关心).
C.Pessimistic.D.Objective(客观的).
4. Why do some environmentalists point out that nuclear power is not a long      term solution to energy?
A.Because the resource for producing nuclear power will come to an end someday.
B.Because they think nuclear power gives off too many greenhouse gases.
C.Because the world is facing coal and oil shortages now.
D.Because more and more people are opposed to the use of nuclear power.
