The New Kid in Class
At the beginning of the new term, every student came to school happily. One day, Jackson, a friendly student, sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy, who just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at rest, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.
When the bell rang for a rest, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
”Hi Billy,“ Jackson said with a smile as they walked outside. ”Do you want to play basketball?“
”No. I’m not very good at basketball. “
”Do you want to play kickball? “ Jackson asked again.
”No. I’m not good at that either, “ Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the school yard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things and both times Billy said no. He felt a little depressed. Maybe Billy didn’t like to get along with Jackson. Maybe he didn’t want to be friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with the other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. It must be hard to move to a new school, Jackson thought. He decided to give it one more try and let him be his friend. What would be a better one? He paced backwards and forwards nervously.
It was at that time that Jackson reached into his pocket and pulled out two toy cars that his brother gave him before. His brother has tons of cars and always gives him his old ones. It was the two cars that made him give it one more try.

Louisa Cantoni became aware of a young man leaning against the side of her house, a cigarette hanging from his mouth. He looked to be 13 or 14 years old with threatening, dark brown eyes.
When she was younger, the little ones would flock around her. They loved her Italian accent and flowers and always stayed nearby when it was tomato season, popping her sweet tomatoes into their mouths. Those sweet memories were just that. So much had changed in the neighborhood. The Italian section of the downtown area had been turned into low-rent housing and overgrown yards. New renters had just moved in and worn her out with all the rudeness, the shouting, and the sad faces of the grannies.
One day, Louisa was harvesting the last of her vegetables when a shadow appeared from behind her. She knew it was the boy. “What, what do you want from me?” She asked in a tired tone. The boy stood silent for a while. “My momma, she likes flowers, show me how?” he offered. “Show you what, how to be a nice person?” Louisa had no interest in showing this boy anything. “Show me how to grow those.” He pointed to the flowers. Louisa sighed. “Just go on away and leave me alone.”
“You ain’t gotta be so mean,” Jevon murmured and left.
The next day, the boy came as usual, but she noticed he was different, younger, innocent and beautiful with smooth brown skin and broad shoulders.
“What is your name, young man?” She asked.
“My name Jevon.”
“Thank you, I am Louisa. Miss Louisa to you.” She stuck out her hand which he reluctantly shook. “What is it you want from me? You stare at me; you steal my zinnias(百日菊). That’s not nice, Jevon.”
“I want to learn how to grow a flower for my momma.” He sounded like a little boy.
“I have rules, Jevon. No rudeness, no hoodie(连帽衫), pull your pants up, and no cigarettes, ever.”
“You’re not my momma. I don’t have to do any of that,” he responded.

Five days later, Jevon showed up in a clean T-shirt and belted pants.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I had just gotten out of middle school and was about to enter senior high school. I was so excited to become a big girl, but I also knew I would miss my old school on the first day. I wasn’t going to be walking into the same school, with the same friends and same teachers.
I thought I was ready for the change, though. I had a friend who would be at my new school--my neighbor Jenny. I would be fine.
I soon realized Jenny got popular fast at the new school. But Jenny changed very quickly. She dressed differently, she acted differently, and she talked differently. Undoubtedly, she preferred to spend too much time socializing (交往) rather than study. A part of me didn’t want to be popular by changing myself, but the other half couldn’t help it. So, I sat with Jenny and her friends in the new clique (小圈子). I noticed that when you sat in “the group”, everyone was so nice. They concentrated their topics on eating, dressing, hanging out, and watching videos or movies. I made so many friends that I felt accepted, but I wasn’t myself around them. Gradually, I found myself no longer a hard-working student, showing less interest in exploring the world of knowledge.
Jenny had taught me the “rules” of being popular: where I should shop, what I should say, and what I should stop doing. I changed myself. I tried hard to be the opposite of who I really was, just to be as popular as my “group”. Before long, I just couldn’t take it anymore, because I felt unhappy and anxious about my studies. I wondered how I could get over my loneliness if I separated from the group. So I talked to my mom about it.
