When I read one of Graham’s books and saw him on TV,I was proud of him. I used     1     (teach) him! I remember Graham was very difficult     2     I taught him. He was very bright but lacked     6     (confident) in himself. With my encouragement, he had done very well in science subjects. A visit to Pingyao, Shanxi Province, feels like walking through a time capsule. The 2,700-year-old city was once the celebrated banking capital of China, as important in the latter part of the Qing Dynasty    1    Wall Street is in the United States today.

While    2    （it）financial power has faded, Pingyao's impressive architecture from that heady period, and before—including its 3.7 mile-long city wall—has remained remarkably undamaged.

In fact, Pingyao,    3    became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, still has some 4,000    4    （tradition）Chinese courtyard homes,    5    （date）far back to the Ming Dynasty.

"There are very few courtyard homes remaining in China," says Kuanghan Li, director of the China Heritage Program at the non-profit Global Heritage Fund.    6    （know）as a "siheyuan", literally meaning a “quadrangle garden", each courtyard home consists of a courtyard surrounded by structures on all four sides. In most cases, courtyard homes    7    （divide）into three parts: a main house for the family, an area for servants` rooms, a yard, where horses were kept.

A decade ago, the Global Heritage Fund    8    （begin）working with the Pingyao government to protect the ancient city. In 2012, the Global Heritage Fund helped the Planning Bureau set up a program    9    （preserve）the courtyard homes, which would see the local government provide a subsidy, and technical expertise, to    10    （homeowner）.

The apsaras, angel-like beings known as feitian in Chinese, are a symbol of the city of Dunhuang. Here, in     1     historic Silk Road oasis in Gansu province, feitian-themed decorations and designs are common, ranging from towering sculptures of heavenly musicians holding Chinese pipa lutes     2     complex drawings of charming beauties bearing flowers on the cups.

Dunhuang has amazed the world with its nearby Mogao Caves, one of the greatest “storerooms” of ancient Buddhist art.     3     (date) back to the 4th century, these artworks cover the     4     (gold) age of the Tang (618-907) and other influential dynasties,     5     the city played an important role as a centre of exchanges between East and West.

Today, the great impact of the murals, sculptures, scripts     6     other major objects discovered in the early 20th century at the UNESCO World Heritage Site still     7     (continue) to be felt beyond the cultural, historical and religious field.

As a major     8     (represent) of traditional Chinese culture, Dunhuang art also offers an important way     9     (distinguish) traditional Chinese culture and help spread an appreciation of     10     all over the world.
