A psychologist once said, “If you’ve overcome every one of your fears,     1    (congratulation)—you’re dead.” This    2     (humor) saying points to a simple truth- no one can escape fear completely.

3    , fear can be a good thing. In fact, sometimes we are afraid of things that aren’t dangerous, such as public speaking, failing a test,or    4     (reject). These unhealthy fears can keep us from achieving our dreams. So how can we successfully face our fears?

Admit what you fear and then share it with someone you trust. Perhaps you worry that others would look down    5    you if they know what you fear, but you might be surprised at how many other people share the same fears.    6     (learn) you are not the only one who fears something will give your self-confidence    7    push.

Ask yourself, “What is the worst-case scenario(最坏的情况)?” If you think about it, the worst might not be that bad after all.    8    (compare) with the fear of losing a competition or being turned down, the regret of having missed opportunities can be even    9    ( hard) to bear. Even worse, you will never know what you might have accomplished.

Take small steps toward overcoming your fear. If you fear public speaking, start by giving a small talk to a few people. If your talk doesn’t go well, try again. Each small success will increase your confidence and persistence(坚持), which is one of the keys to success.

You might never completely overcome your fear of certain things, but what is important is    10    you can bring yourself to do what you fear.

A FOREIGNER IN A FOREIGN LAND

“There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

This is a great travel quote, and one that greatly reflects the issue I have with many travelers. Why do people, when visiting other cities and countries, think the destination should change itself     1     (cater) to them? It’s something I think many travelers do     2     even realizing it, and can be detrimental to allowing yourself to really experience and appreciate a destination as well as have true cultural immersion.

I can think of one example off the top of my head that     3     (occur) during a trip through Europe with a girl named Kate. One day in Vienna we went to a McDonald’s so Kate could get a tomato and mozzarella salad, only the cashier didn’t speak English. We had thought she had understood the order, but brought over a Caesar salad. Instead of just eating the salad and getting over it, Kate turned into Mr. Hyde, snapping at the girl     4     she had acted out of line.

“THIS ISN’T WHAT I WANTED,” said Kate, a little too loudly for my taste.

The cashier looked     5     (confuse ), most likely because she didn’t know     6     Kate was saying but could comprehend she was angry.

“Kate, just eat the Caesar salad and we can go somewhere else if you’re still hungry,” I begged,     7     (feel) the people around us staring.

“No!” she shouted.” I really want that salad. “Turning back to the girl, she said sternly, “I ordered a mozzarella salad! Do you understand me?!”

Then she turned to me and uttered the five words     8     make my blood boil: “Why doesn’t she speak English?”

Because we’re in Vienna! In reality, the real question should have been why didn’t we speak Austrian? This city     9     have seemed odd to us, but in reality we were the odd ones, an American and a Canadian from thousands of miles away who didn’t speak the language, didn’t have the same diet and knew     10     about classical music. I almost wished the cashier would turn to Kate and toss the salad in her face and scream, “Learn to speak Austrian!”

【推荐3】Many people think when they become rich and successful, happiness will     1    (nature) follow. However, the world is full of rich people who are miserable as if they     2    (live) in Hell. We have read some stories about movie stars who committed suicide     3    died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer     4    all problems. Wealth     5    (acquire) through dishonest means does not bring happiness. In my view, the secret to happiness lies in your hard work, your     6    (contribute) towards others’ happiness and your wealth you earn through your own effort. If you get your money by taking advantage of others, you will not be happy with it. Long-term happiness     7    (base) on honesty, hard work and self-esteem. Happiness is not     8    end; it is a process. It is no use saying that some day when I get a car, build a house or own my own business, then I will be really happy. Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things     9    (happen) to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something     10    (miss).
