Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. It's a big event usually at the end of March every year. On this evening, people “go dark”.
It's true that turning off lights for just one hour saves only a small amount of power.
But on another level, a large number of people’s acting together sends a powerful message to governments and companies.
The logo(标识) of Earth Hour is “60+” .The number 60 is for the 60 minutes of Earth Hour.

B.Earth Hour represents every hour of every day. |
C.After all, everyone has to answer for what they have done. |
D.Besides turning off the lights, people get involved in other events. |
E.It pushes them to take urgent measures by making changes to policies. |

It's difficult to point out where all that waste comes from, and researchers think that much or most of it probably comes from the nation's seriously-populated coasts. But there's also evidence that the nation's inland waterways serve as a passage for plastic to travel thousands of miles into the oceans.
While researchers have documented plastic and human trash floating in the world's oceans, there has been relatively little attention paid to plastics in rivers, streams and lakes. "To my knowledge, no one has studied particular routes, with the exception of places like L.A, and Baltimore Harbor where there are measures in place to prevent trash in rivers from entering the ocean." said Kara Lavender Law, an oceanographer.
The few studies that exist, however, suggest that it may be a huge problem. A 2011 study of two southern California urban rivers---including Santa Ana River---found that every square meter of water contained from 125 to 819 pieces larger than 4.75 millimeters. Another survey of the Meuse River, which flows 575 miles through France, Belgium and the Netherlands to the North Sea, found that it contained 70,000 pieces of plastics per square meter of water, about 500 of which were roughly an inch or bigger in size.
If there's anything positive in this, it's you that can do something, at least on a personal level, to reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the oceans. "Put trash where it goes." said Jenna Jambeck, an associate professor of environmental engineering at the University of Georgia. "Use reusable items---bags, cups and bottles---to reduce waste."
Finally, Jambeck urges people to pick up litter along waterways, and record it with a phone app called the Marine Debris Tracker. The data you provide can help scientists to get a better handle on the trash problem.

The silver-backed chevrotain — also known as the Vietnamese mouse deer — is about the size of a large rabbit. They are shy, enjoy being alone, appear to walk on the hips of their hooves (蹄) and have two sharp teeth. Chevrotains typically weigh less than 5 kilograms.
Its last recorded sighting was in 1990, when a team of Vietnamese and Russian researchers obtained a dead chevrotain from a hunter. “Then nothing. So little known about it that the species was one big question mark. For so long, it has seemingly only existed as part of our imagination,” said Vietnamese biologist Any Nguyen.
One of the biggest challenges was deciding where to start the search. After several interviews with local villagers who reported seeing a grey mouse deer, a field team set three camera traps for five months. “We had these two areas separated by quite some distance — one in the southern part of Vietnam and the other much further north,” said Andrew Tilker, Asian Species Officer at the Global Wildlife Conservation. This resulted in 275 photographs of the species. The team then set up another 29 cameras in the same area, this time recording 1,881 photographs of the animal.
Tilker also warned that just because this species was found relatively easily, it doesn’t mean it’s not under threat. “This might represent the last population or one of a handful populations, in which case we need to take action immediately to put conservation measures in place to ensure its survival.”
The team is now setting out to determine how large and stable this population of chevrotains is, assess the wider distribution of the species, and explore the threats to its survival. As part of the first-ever comprehensive survey on the species, the team began camera trap surveys in October in two additional areas. They will use all of the information that they gather to set up a project that strengthens the conservation of the species across its range.

The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake’s water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake’s water is evaporating (蒸发) faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If this continues, the lake’s water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to change this situation that is threatening the lake’s health.
One choice is direct removal of salt from the lake’s water in special machines. Water from the lake would be forced into the machine and heated. This would cause the water to evaporate into steam, while salt and other materials dissolved (溶解) in the water would be left behind. The steam would then be cooled down and returned to the lake as salt-free water. Gradually, the high salt levels would be reduced and the lake’s overall health would be restored.
Another possible solution is to make the salt level weaker in the lake with water from the ocean. Since water in the Pacific Ocean is 20 percent less salty than water in the lake, bringing ocean water into the lake would decrease the lake’s salinity. The ocean water could be delivered through pipelines or canals.
Yet another solution would be to control the lake’s salinity by building walls to divide the lake into several parts. In the smaller parts, salinity would be allowed to increase. However, in the main and largest part, salinity would be reduced and controlled by directing all the freshwater from small rivers in the area to flow into that main part of the lake.
1. What’s the purpose of solving the salinity of the Salton Sea?A.To improve the health of the Salton Sea. |
B.To support the water supply of people in California. |

A.cool down the water | B.mix the materials |

A.The Pacific Ocean is more salty than water in the lake. |
B.There’s no conclusion of the best solution to salinity. |
C.Heating the water would leave salt in water. |
D.If divided, the largest part of the lake is allowed to keep high salt level. |

Now that the Internet provides us with direct access to all kinds of information, some people say we don't need public libraries.
Finnish designers have used the new concept of a useful public space.
Antti Nousjoki, one of Oodi's architects, said the idea is to make the place “an indoor town square.”
Of course, Oodi still serves as a traditional library, with a catalogue of about 100,000 books.
While most libraries around the world offer Internet access and other services, Finnish libraries often differ themselves in services, including access to e-publications, power tools and even karaoke.
“Oodi has been designed to give citizens and visitors a free space to actively do what they want to do —not just be a consumer," said Nousjoki.
A.Oodi goes even further. |
B.It attracts many visitors with each new month. |
C.Oodi has many advantages over traditional libraries. |
D.Since opening, Oodi lends out 5,000 books each day. |
E.Library Oodi pushes the boundaries (边界) of what a library can be. |
F.This may be why some public libraries are finding new ways to serve the public. |
G.The building was designed without inner support columns(柱子), so the inside is mostly a large open space. |
