China's Worst Sandstorm

China's worst sandstorm in a decade caused mass disruptions on Monday as vast swathes (广大地区) of the country were thrown into a thick, orange haze of dust and sand,     1    (force) authorities to cancel hundreds of flights, shutter roads and schools, and suspend outdoor activities.

In Beijing, poor visibility paralyzed traffic as residents posted photos of skyscrapers seemingly     2     (disappear) into the fog and compared images of the haze to scenes in the dystopian 1982 film Blade Runner.

Beijing and 23 other cities recorded “off the chart”levels of air pollution, according to state media. In Beijing, PM 10, a measure of tiny particles in the air often     3     (associate) with sandstorms, hit more than 9, 000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 180 times the level considered healthy by the World Health Organization. Some residents said they were wearing two masks even while indoors.

Officials in neighboring Mongolia, after the sandstorm     4     (emerge) before sweeping across northern China, were searching for more than 80 herders who had gone missing.

China's National Meteorological Center said it expected 12 provinces and municipalities — an area covering about 160, 000 square miles, about the size of California —     5     (affect) by the storm. The National Health Commission advised residents to stay indoors, seal windows and doors, and to use humidifiers and wet cloth     6     (deal) with any dust.     7     residents must go outside, they should wear a mask, a hat or scarf to protect their face.

How Do Avalanches Happen

If you’re ever skiing in the mountains, you’ll want to be aware of avalanches. An avalanche is a sudden flow of snow down a slope, such as a mountain. The amount of snow in an avalanche     1     (vary) based on many things, but it can be such a huge amount that it can bury the bottom of a slope in dozens of feet of snow.

Avalanches     2     be caused by natural things. For example, new snow or rain can cause built-up snow to loosen and fall down the side of a mountain. Artificial triggers(诱发因素)can also cause avalanches. For example, snowmobiles, skiers, and explosives     3     (know) to lead to avalanches.

Avalanches   usually occur   during the   winter   and spring,     4     snowfall   is   greatest.   As they are dangerous to any living beings in their path, avalanches have destroyed forests, roads, railroads and even entire towns. Warning signs exist that allow experts to predict -- and often prevent -- avalanches from     5

(occur). When over a foot of fresh snow falls, experts know to be on the lookout for avalanches. Explosives can be used in places     6     massive snow buildups to trigger much smaller avalanches that don’t     pose a danger to persons or property.

When deadly avalanches do occur, the moving snow can quickly reach over 80 miles per hour. Skiers caught in such avalanches can be buried under dozens of feet of snow.     7     it’s   possible to dig out   of such avalanches, not all are able to escape.

If you get tossed about by an avalanche and find yourself     8     (bury) under many feet of snow, you might not have a true sense of which way is up and which way is down. Some avalanche victims have tried to dig their way out, only to find that they were upside down and digging     9     farther under the snow rather than to the top!

Experts suggest that people caught in an avalanche try to dig around   you     10     (create) a space for air, so you can breathe more easily. Then, do your best to figure out which way is up and dig in that direction to reach the surface and signal rescuers.

This April marks the     1     (four) anniversary of Notre-Dame in Paris being engulfed by the biggest blaze in its history.

NotreDame on Fire, now in Chinese cinemas, is a disaster epic     2     veteran French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud, who also helmed Wolf Totem(2015), a drama film     3     (adapt) from Chinese writer Jiang Rong’s eponymous novel. The film made its China premiere on April 6 in Beijing in the presence of France’s Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak and the director.

“It was a     7     (danger) movie. The actors were actually very close to the extremely violent fire, 1,200-degree Fahrenheit fire. There are very few digital special effects. Almost all of what you have seen are     8     (identical) reconstructed sets that I set on fire,” he said.

“When I saw this movie in Paris last year, it took me a few hours     9     I could breathe and walk normally on the street,” said Malak at the film’s China premiere.

The French minister announced that 2024 will be the France-China Year of Culture and Tourism and she invited Chinese tourists to travel to France for the occasion, especially to see the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris,     10     , after almost six years of extensive renovations, is scheduled to reopen to the public in December of the same year.
