The crisis(危机)at Japan's Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear(核)energy center caused by the terrible earthquake has raised questions about the future of the nuclear energy industry. Arjun Makhijani is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in the United States. He says the disaster(灾难)in Japan is historic.

This week, the chairman of America's nuclear agency said there is little chance that harmful radiation(辐射)from Japan could reach the United States. Gregory also said America has a strong program in place to deal with earthquake threats. No new nuclear power centers have been built in the United States since 1979 That was when America's worst nuclear accident happened at the Three Mile Island center in percent of electricity in the United States comes from nuclear energy. At present, about twenty percent of electricity in the United States comes from nuclear energy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would close seven nuclear power centers while energy policy is reconsidered. The European Union is planning to test all centers in its twenty-seven member nations.

Developing nations are less willing to slow down the development of nuclear(nuclear expansion)China said it will continue with plans to build about twenty-five new nuclear reactors(反应堆). And India under a cooperation agreement with the United States, plans to spend billions on new centers in the coming years.

【推荐1】Are flash floods becoming more severe? Natural disasters are generally getting worse—and that's true for floods, too.

As climate change warms the atmosphere, extreme rainfall is rising, which increases the risk of flash floods. Heavy precipitation(降水) events are predicted to increase by 2 to 3 times the historical average. The Federal Emergency Management Agency expects the nation’s floodplains to expand by 45 percent by the end of this century, as the agency reported in a recent study. A study in early 2021 found that increased precipitation—resulting partially from climate change—costs the US an additional $ 2.5 billion each year in flood damage. And some studies show that flood frequency was increasing in the Mississippi River valley and across the Midwest in the last century, as well as in the Northeast over the past 50 years.

There are several steps you can take to prepare for flash floods

First, know the level of risk by looking at flood maps. You may be required to have flood insurance if you live in a high-risk area.

Pay attention to flash flood watches, which the National Weather Service issues to indicate when conditions could result.in flash floods. People in these areas-should be-ready to take action—particularly if the NWS announces a flash flood warning. That’s issued when flash floods are approaching and, at that point, people should immediately leave the area.

But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don’t drive through flooded streets—it's difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse. If floodwaters cause your vehicle to lose control, abandon it and seek the higher ground. Rapidly rising water can sweep the vehicle away. Know your surroundings and head to the higher ground, and listen to the radio updates when in a flood.

It’s also important to develop an emergency prepared plan with your family or those you live with to have a few days’ worth of resources.

Besides Phoenix and nearby cities, the storm also reached Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It reduced the visibility (能见度) in these areas, putting off the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The storm only takes place in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amounts of sand. Because of the serious shortage of rain, there’s a large possibility that the water is polluted because of the storm.

【推荐3】A powerful magnitude 7.1 temblor rocked Southern California at 8:19 PT on July 5, 2019, just 34 hours after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the same area. This latest event was widely felt.     1    Aftershocks are expected to continue.

Earthquakes are also called temblors.     2    It’s hard to imagine they happen by the thousands every day around the world, usually in the form of small tremors. Some 80% of all the planet’ s earthquakes happen along the rim (边缘) of the Pacific Ocean.    3    That is because of a lot of volcanic activity there, as well.

Scientists give a magnitude rating to earthquakes based on the strength and duration of their seismic (地震的) waves. A magnitude of 3 to 4.9 is considered minor or light; 5 to 6.9 is moderate (中等的) to strong; 7 to 7.9 is major; and 8 or more is great.

4    Some 10,000 people die in earthquakes every year. Earthquakes may also lead to other natural disasters. Smaller temblors that usually happen in the days following a large earthquake can cause further death and damage.     5
