We have that one person in our life who constantly tries to make us a better person. That person sacrifices his time and energy for the pursuit to put us in the right path and not let us wander away into dangerous waters. I have had the experience of having such a person who managed to change my life for better.

I picked up the habit of smoking right after my high school. From wanting to have first-time experience with holding a cigarette, I started developing a minor addiction towards it. In company with friends who smoked, I started smoking regularly and became heavily addicted to smoking. I used to secretly smoke in the house so that my parents wouldn’t find out. There were days when I used to smoke a full packet of cigarettes, which changed my life.

I was proud of my brother, but he was also a chain-smoker and had started suffering lung problems because of the heavy smoking. He quit smoking because of the regular chest pains and other complications which started developing. Since he faced a lot of health problems, he started understanding the bad impacts of smoking.

He knew I had become badly addicted to smoking. Since he was very close to me and loved me, he started asking me to quit smoking. I never listened to him. He used to hide my packet of cigarettes or throw them in the bin.

Despite his regular pains and problems, he made it his aim to make me quit smoking. However, on one particular day he complained of severe chest pains so we rushed him to the nearby hospital. His condition worsened in the hospital and the next day, he was declared dead. We were in great shock and the whole thing seemed unbelievable. I missed my brother a lot and was frequently reminded of his repeated warning to me to quit smoking.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.

She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost and found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The Following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretend I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I never say anything about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly, so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework she was there to help.

There was only one problem with this perfect dog: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for.

I’d like to share with you a funny incident that occurred almost 4 years ago.

I was an 8th grader at high school. One day, the teacher gave us a group assignment and we went to some libraries after class to collect data. In the evening, I found that my group members were complaining that they were hungry and needed to have some food.

Together we entered a restaurant nearby. When the waiter approached our table, one of my classmates made an order directly without even looking at the menu. And after we were done with our food, a classmate asked the group leader to pay the bill. The group leader was surprised as he had not offered the meal and said that he did not have the money to pay the bill. I asked the waiter to bring the bill and we were shocked to see the amount. It was much more than we had expected. Though we were a bit worried, we started laughing and enjoying the whole thing. At this moment, a group member suggested we collect all of our money to pay the bill. We searched our wallets, pockets and bags for money. There were so many coins there that we had to count 2-3 times. But unfortunately, the total amount was still not enough to pay the bill.

As the scene unfolded, the atmosphere shifted from casual laughter to a shared sense of responsibility. Realizing the gravity of the situation, I stepped up and decided to explain our situation to the manager, hoping for some understanding or perhaps a way to work out a payment plan. To our relief, the manager kindly listened to our story. Seeing our genuine efforts to resolve the issue, he agreed to let us pay what we had collected and arrange for the rest to be settled later.

It was a sunny day this April, and I was flying with my boy off to Carnavon in my light aircraft to see a solar eclipse (日食). Looking out of the window, I was deeply absorbed in the picturesque scenery below. My son Jacob, 15, who was enthusiastic about flying, was in high spirits.

After 25 years in the mining industry, I’d quit my job to pursue a career in flying. Getting my commercial pilot license in September 2022, I believed this was my calling.

Jacob was a passionate flyer, who always enjoyed the flights with me. “What does this button do?” “How does it work?” “What is the function?” There were so many questions he’d ask curiously. I wonder if he’ll be a pilot some day.

Watching the eclipse through our solar goggles (护目镜), we both were in amazement. After a bite of lunch, I did all my checks and refuelled the plane before flying us back.

Flying back into the air, I headed towards Jandakot Airport, which was right near our house.

More than half way, I spotted some smoke in the air. Realizing we were flying over Lancelin where there’d been some nearby bushfires, I didn’t think there was anything to panic about. Travelling south, we took in the lovely coastline. “This is beautiful!” Jacob exclaimed.

At around 5 p.m., just about five minutes to our destination, the engine suddenly decreased rapidly. Glancing over at my boy, I thought, “this is bad.” As I tried to bring the engine back to life, it worked only for a millisecond (毫秒), and then died again. “Okay mate, we’ve had an engine failure, I said calmly to Jacob. The plane was dropping and we went from 1800 feet to 1500 in just 20 seconds.

Looking forward, I could see Jandakot Airport about 15 kilometres ahead. “We aren’t going to make it,” I told myself. We only had another 60 seconds before making the decision. Looking down at Leighton Beach north of Fremantle below, I saw crowds of people on the beach.
