文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者讲述了自己作为一个不知名小演员的日常的一天,没有掌声,没有欢呼,没有尊重。最后表示,普通人只要自己向着自己的目标努力,就值得尊重。

【推荐1】Acting is all about charm, respect, honor, and all that fame stuff, right? Wrong. Maybe when you’re a big star you’ll get all of that, but it’s a different story for the rest of us. As a normal and unknown actor, here’s a typical day on a film set.

Yesterday my alarm clock went off at 5:20 AM. I had a call time of 7:00 AM and the filming place was far. I gave myself time for a shower and an hour’s drive to the set, plus an extra 10 minutes for safety. The morning traffic was slow as usual but I managed to get there on time.

The director and crew (工作人员) were already there, setting up the scene. Then I talked with the director and found out that he’d changed the lines that I had stayed up until 1:00 AM memorizing the night before. We rehearsed (排练) the scene several times, and then they excused me from it while the crew continued setting up the lights. Normally I’d stay and hang out, but I needed to memorize the new lines so I went to my truck. About twenty minutes later a production assistant knocked on my door.

We got to act and I stepped up to my position. “Roll Cameral” … “Action!” I started to say my lines… “Cut!“ After a few more takes, it was time to move on.

Was there applause (掌声)? Congratulations? Of course not. This is a film, not theater.

You might get a “nice job” out of the director, but that’s it. If there’s one thing you should know about film acting, it’s that there’s a lot of waiting: auditions and preparation for acting. So, is it as shiny as you imagined? Probably not. I’ve got used to my ordinary acting day, but it’s still a wonderful experience bonding with the crew.

In all walks of life, we usually only give those excellent people cheers and it’s more likely that we will not pay attention to the ordinary person. However, even if they have not become a shining star, they are worthy of applause because they are towards their goal of continuous efforts, and finding the value of their own with their passions as well.

【推荐2】If you had asked me then if I would accept a job as a restaurant critic for The New York Times or others, I would have replied, “Definitely not! ” This was partly because I did not want to think of myself as an ambitious sort. Working in restaurants was honest labor, and anyone could see that. Writing about them for the mainstream press was not.

However, the renewing was fun, so much fun that when mainstream publishers started paying me for my opinions, I didn’t do the decent (体面的) thing, and before I knew it, I had stopped cooking professionally. Then I stopped cooking altogether. “She’s joined the leisure class.” my friend said.

I disarmed my critics by inviting them along; nobody I knew could afford to eat out and nobody refused. We went with equal amounts of guilt and pleasure, with a feeling that we were stepping onto the playgrounds of the rich.

We knew we didn’t belong to these grand restaurants. We always got the worst table, and since I didn’t own a credit card, I had to pay in cash. The year turned into two and three, and more. Then, I got a credit card as well as good clothes. I was writing for increasingly prestigious (声誉高的) publications. Meanwhile, a voice inside me kept whispering, “How could you?”

The voice is still there, never coming to a stop. When I receive weekly letters from people who think it is unacceptable to write about $100 meals while half the world is hungry, the voice rings right along, “They’re absolutely right, you elitist (精英) pig is not”. When it asks, “When are you going to grow up and get a real job?”, it sounds a lot like my mother.

It is just at that moment that I tell the voice to shut up because I realize all I’m doing with my life is telling rich people where to eat and how much the world has changed.

Yes, there are still restaurants where rich people go to remind themselves that they are different from you and me, but there are fewer and fewer of them. Going out to eat used to be like going to the opera; today, it is more like going to the movies.

Therefore, everyone has become a critic and I couldn’t be happier with this. The more people pay attention to what and how they eat, the more accustomed they become to their own senses and the world around them. As A. J. Liebling once said, all it really takes to be a restaurant critic is a good appetite.

1. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

C.The author didn’t think highly of the job as a restaurant critic.
D.The author wasn’t able to renew the work as a professional cook.

A.She felt like eating out with the rich.
B.She refused to eat out with the critics.
C.She had a mixed feeling about eating out.
D.She got much fun from being invited to eat out.
3. What does the author want to tell us by saying “The year turned into two, and three, and more.”?
A.She stayed in the career as a professional cook for years.
B.She took up the job of writing as a restaurant critic for years.
C.It took a long time for the publications to increase their prestige.
D.It was years before her application for a credit card got approved.
4. What changes have taken place to American restaurants?
A.Restaurants make people confused about their social status.
B.Rich people can get special treat in some restaurants.
C.Ordinary people have become accustomed to fancy restaurants. o
D.Restaurants have become affordable to common people.
5. Which of the following statements will the author probably agree with?
A.Eating out is not a privilege of the rich.
B.There is no need for restaurant critics at all.
C.The writer is getting tired of her current job.
D.Good appetite makes a good restaurant critic.

【推荐3】About 10 years ago,I sat in my office, struggling to write an annual progress report for my leader. I enjoy writing scientific papers that engage my creativity and further my research. But report writing doesn’t come with any reward apart from the momentary satisfaction of finishing something. Like other routine paperwork,I find it hard to get through. So that day,I offered myself a reward : When I finished the report,I'd give myself 2 hours to examine slides (载玻片)under the microscope — a task I've always loved but never had much time for as a staff member. It ’ s a strategy I call " just for fun",.

The strategy was born out of challenges I experienced in graduate school. I usually delayed putting together reports for university administrators until threatening letters arrived. I never felt that paperwork was advancing my science, but rather sapping my energy and time for research. One of my committee members recognized and understood my difficulties. Then he told me about his strategy of rewarding himself with a fun project when he completed a task that he didn’t particularly enjoy. He advised me to think about doing something similar. I immediately liked the idea.

Over the course of my career, this strategy helped me complete and move past the parts of my job that I didn’t particularly enjoy. The rewards I gave myself provided a way to relax and reminded me why I love being a scientist.

As for that annual report,I spent an ordinary morning on it but got it done. Then I hurried over to the microscope , eager to inspect a series of slides that my collaborators (合作者) had sent a couple of weeks earlier. To others, it may   have looked like work. But to me,it was just for fun.

1. Why does the author dislike report writing?
A.He receives too little from it.
B.It is extremely easy to finish.
C.It needs too much creativity.
D.He doesn’t major in writing.
2. What does the underlined word " sapping" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Acquiring.B.Consuming.
C.Lacking .D.Providing.
3. How did the author get his strategy?
A.Through the inspiration of his report writing.
B.Through the reward of his collaborators.
C.Through the instructions of university administrators.
D.Through a committee member’s suggestion.
4. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A.Choose a career you really like.
B.Seek fun when doing science research.
C.Motivate yourself to finish boring tasks.
D.Reward yourself with a new strategy.
