Museums shouldn’t be free. Here’s why.

After New York’s Met recently announced its change to entrance fees,     1     (make) the $25 charge required rather than     2     (suggest)—it has raised the question whether museums should be free of charge to the public.

Ideally, the answer would be YES. However, it’s impractical. With funding decreasing every year, museums are struggling to keep their exhibits running.     3     (current), the national museums in London remain free. While it’s wonderful for people     4     want to see what these museums offer and teach them, it’s not always the best for the museums facing increasing hardships in terms     5     funding.

In 2017, a survey     6     (conduct) to find out how funding cuts affected museums. The survey stated that “many publicly-funded museums are facing a funding crisis.” It     7     (go) on to say that almost half of all museums reported     8     annual increase in visitor numbers.

The reduction in funding also affects staff numbers. Across national museums, there has been a 55% decrease in staff members. How are our national museums supposed to function without enough experienced staff members? Though making entrance fees compulsory will make museums less     9     (access) to some, many museums do have certain days of the week when     10     (admit) is free.

Therefore, small and reasonable entrance fees will take pressure off museums that are losing out on funding and staff members.
