When a package from an e-commerce shopping platform arrives on the doorstep, how many of us think about where it comes from?
It is not merely the “last mile”—the delivery, which adds to our carbon footprints but every step: from when a product was made, all the way to when it makes it into our hands.
1. Package design
When we think about a single package, the amount of tape used to secure each one might seem insignificant.

B.It is impossible for one party to achieve this on their own. |
C.Put simply, the supply chain is extremely carbon intensive (密集的). |

E.But what if we are talking about the billions of parcels used in this industry? |
F.One solution is using packaging boxes that can be circulated throughout the ecosystem. |
G.The rain collection system below the warehouses serves as a source of water supply. |

Reich was an engineer in Seattle. Because he cared about the environment, he biked to work every day. He carried his work and his laptop in a bike bag. When someone took his bag, he tried to buy a new one. But he couldn’t find one he liked. So he decided to make his own. Riding a bike every day leads to lots of tire punctures(轮胎刺破). As a result, he had plenty of used inner tubes in his apartment. Inner tubes are the inside part of a bike tire. They are soft, flexible, and feel like leather. They are also waterproof--all perfect qualities for a bag.
The design loved by friends and others, Reich quit his job, and started his own business--Alchemy Goods. At first, he depended on his friends for inner tubes. But business was good, and he quickly ran short of these tubes. He needed a new supply. So he asked local bike stores to send him used inner tubes instead of throwing them away. To date, he has used over 300,000 inner tubes. Having a good supply of these materials is a critical part of Reich’s business.
Each bag uses as many recycled products as possible. The straps, for example, are old care seat belts. Reich’s goal is to use 1000 percent recycled materials. This is not easy. “It’s hard to come up with a product that is endlessly recycled.

But as I followed the advice,I met many challenges. It turns out that small town Ontario isn't nearly as progressive as San Francisco when it comes to allowing reusable containers in grocery stores.
That’s when I wished I still live in downtown Toronto which would give me access to many health food store that allowed reusable containers. It took a while, but finally I realized that my location give me one key advantage over city’s people. I now live at the center of food production, which means I can go directly to producers to get ingredients that are not only package-free but the freshest and most delicious.
“Zero waste should be thought as more of an ideal than an hard-and-fast rule. It’s so geographically independent on what is in your area, so I think it is about doing your best to make use of the resources you have.” said Celia Ristow, founder of a website. It is refreshing to see that fact accepted by others. It’s true that the best-known zero waste supporters are city’s people, who have access to many stores and restaurants that are willing to work with them.
However, wherever you are, it is impossible to find a places that meets all the ideals criteria. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. The food scene in my small town has changed greatly in the past six years and far more reusable choices have been available than before. We have a food co-op that allows for online ordering and home delivering, many locations for dropping off milk bottles, a growing summer farmer’s market and large pick-your own fruit farm.
I tell people and remind myself to remove what you can. Maybe the farmer’s market share are only seasonal, and you have to be perfect, in fact, as the saying goes, “Perfection is the enemy of progress.”
1. What advantage does the author have over city's people?A.An access to delicious food | B.A chance to avoid wasting food |
C.A direct access to farmer | D.A chance to refusing food containers |
A.It should be viewed as a rule. | B.It requires you to start small. |
C.It is more widely supported. | D.It has geographic limitation. |
A.Making good use of what you have. | B.Finding some more zero waste methods. |
C.Trying to improve your surroundings. | D.Buying supermarket produce once a week. |
A.Zero Waste makes no place perfect | B.Zero Waste depends on where you live |
C.Zero Waste is a hard-and-fast rule | D.Zero Waste calls on you to start small |

The researchers based the assessment (评估) on some 15,000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.
The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated (驯养的) animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.
There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species, for their health care.
The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the bad news. They think at the top of the list is the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can kill native plants and animals. In fact, good ecosystems can promote the growth of species.
The researchers say it is time for humans to act. They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life can turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.
1. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?A.To introduce the topic of the text. | B.To introduce the schedule of the report. |
C.To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility. | D.To introduce the history of human development. |
A.The reliability of the findings. | B.The species of animals worldwide. |
