Happiness is the most sought-after emotion. It is the reason for the existence of all beings. Happiness is not confined to the human world alone.     1

A young child is happy when it is well fed and becomes sad when it is hungry. Even adults cannot resist the pleasures of food and associate this with happiness. A bar of chocolate, an ice cream treat, or a fancy spread at a buffet all bring happiness.     2     Plants that are watered and given enough nutrients will grow happily.

3     Toys and gadgets, presents, and red packets bring unexpected joy. Even a pet cat or dog will show its happiness at being given a toy or plaything. A ball of wool or a plastic bone is all it takes.

Then, there is the house and the car, holidays abroad, a simple picnic, or even a movie that evokes happiness. Happiness is found in obtaining material things or indulging in recreational activities.     4     Why? Well, it all boils down to the individual. Money can buy happiness to a certain extent but when all is achieved, obtained, and bought, there comes a time for the true sense of happiness.

Many have sought it in ashrams and from wise men, but all it takes is an act of kindness and sharing. True happiness is eventually not in the receiving, possessing, and getting but in the giving. Giving time, things, labor to those around us, loved ones or strangers is the true happiness that lives on in our lives.     5     It doesn't have to be grand or expensive but has to be sincere and thoughtful. As Mark Twain once said, “The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” So, go out there and cheer someone up!

A.Clothing and accessories bring happiness.
B.Making others happy is the core of being happy.
C.Animals and even plants seem to display happiness.
D.People are happiest when they are having a meal and some drink.
E.Everything we do is aimed at letting other people live more happily.
F.Different individuals have different definitions of happiness, though.
G.However, many are still not happy with all these trappings of luxury.

【推荐1】“Dad,” I say one day, “Let’s take a trip. Why don’t you fly and meet me?”

As a manager from IBM, my father’s job filled his day, his thought, his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I had fun under the Eiffel Tower. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.

My father sees me travelling without a purpose, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down (安定下来), but now I want him to explore the world.

He agrees and we meet four weeks later in Rapid City.

“What is our first stop?” asks my father.

“What time is it?”

“Still don’t have a watch?”

Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he looks up at sculptures of the four Presidents in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of little boy.

“Amazing,” he says, “How was this done?”

A film in the information center shows sculptor(雕塑家) Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculptures.

We look up and I ask myself, “Can I devote my life to anything?”

No directions, no purpose. I always used to hear those words in my father’s voice. Now I hear them in my own.

The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.

“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.

“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other---but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”

The last sentence---it’s probably the same thing I will say about my father. And what I want my child to say about me.

In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I’ve never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling. I realize--- and maybe a fixed job won’t be as boring as I think.

Weeks after our trip, I call my father. “The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.” I tell him I’ve decided to settle down and find a fixed job, and I’m wearing a watch.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章解释了为什么旅行是宝贵的学习经历的四个原因。

【推荐2】Travelling is undoubtedly one of the most valuable learning experiences one can have. Whether it’s the people you meet or the things you see, travelling provides more valuable life lessons than school.     1    . Here are four reasons why travelling is such a valuable learning experience:

Travelling forces you out of your comfort zone.

School provides a safe environment where you feel comfortable with people who share similar cultures and backgrounds. Meanwhile, travelling means new foods, cultures, languages, people, and places to explore.     2     And it is a good thing, because it will help you grow as a person.

Travelling allows you to see and experience new ways of life.

3     Reading about it in a textbook is not the same as living it. Travelling gives you a new perspective(观点) on how you live and helps you understand and appreciate different cultures.

    4

Moving to a new place far away from home requires you to adapt to a new culture, language, and customs. Overcoming these challenges and accomplishing things you never thought possible will build your confidence and self-esteem(自尊心).

Travelling helps you be comfortable with uncertainty and the unexpected.

If there’s only one thing you can be sure of while travelling, it’s that trips don’t always go according to plans. There are plenty of things that can go wrong and that can force you to change your plans. Travel teaches you to be flexible, go with the flow, and accept uncertainty.     5

In conclusion, travelling is an enriching experience that provides valuable life lessons that cannot be learned in a classroom. It helps you grow as a person, build confidence, appreciate different cultures, and become more adaptable to change.

A.Travel with an open mind.
B.Travelling helps you build confidence.
C.It pushes you out of your comfort zone.
D.Instead of being told something, you experience it.
E.Travellers love to make plans, but they also like to break them.
F.This skill is necessary in life as plans often change unexpectedly.
G.Nothing compares to experiencing a different way of life firsthand

【推荐3】Dear Mom,

The big question which shocked parents often ask their child after a confrontational(冲突) moment is, "Where did you get this attitude from?" I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.

Mom, I know it's hard dealing with the teenage anxiety and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I've made it this far, that I'm healthy and happy.

When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn't be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother's daughter.

"Your mom is Melissa," they'd say, a warm smile on their faces. "Is that Tight?” I would nod. I think parents feel much hurt when their child talks back or defies them, I was shocked at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.

No one says, ”I know you're Melissa's daughter because of your eyes and nose". It's the character traits(特点)that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude-these are the things I am grateful I have received from you. There's nothing wrong with having attitude.

Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it's what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation-where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are.

Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.

When I'm asked why I am the way I am, why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions and why I think and speak about things openly and without fear. I'll tell them it's because of you.

I'll complain to you about the arguments between us that leave me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed. But I'll tell them about you.

Love,

Malahni

1. In this letter, Malahni mainly expressed her to her mother.
A.complaintB.love
C.argumentD.anxiety
2. People recognized Malahni as Melissa's daughter mainly because of her .
A.appearanceB.behavior

3. The underlined word "defies" in the 4th paragraph most probably means
A.refuses to obeyB.agrees with
C.takes pride inD.tries to understand
4. Malahni can be a woman .
A.easy to be oppressed and defeatedB.hard to get along with
C.with a positive attitude towards lifeD.with violent confrontation
