As a stay-at-home mom for 26 years, KC just turned 50 and she wanted to seek a job. She was not just looking for something to do. Putting four kids through college had left her severe financial problems and getting a job was a must!
From childhood, all KC wanted to be was a mom. "That's all. I'm just a mom who stays at home with my children and creates a good and comfortable home for my family." She was not sure why that ambition(夙愿) was so strong for her. "My mom worked full-time, so I did not see her often. Maybe because I wished she had been at home with me," KC said. So after the birth of her first child, KC gave up her job and spent the next 26 years taking care of her children. But after such a long time, she wanted to find a job.
She realized the difficulty of the situation. When she sent a resume that had a 26-year gap, she knew it was lucky if she could get an interview, let alone an offer. Besides, her education was also one of the obstacles (障碍). The fact that she didn’t go to college was a disadvantage.
So after her own experiences, she advised others, "Get a college degree! You needn't change the thing about being a stay-at-home mom, but do something — no matter how small — to keep your skills up to date. There are so many choices these days that it will be easy to do while you're a full-time mom."
KC would still like to get a degree and then she discussed it with her husband. Her husband thought that she needed to go to a tutorial school. She agreed. KC wanted to keep up with current technology so she took classes to learn to use software.

Programming Intern (实习生). I wasn’t sure why this job announcement appeared on my feed. I was looking for a real job, not an internship. The fortieth birthday was coming in just a few months, and I needed to get my act together — to finally figure out what I was going to do all day. An internship? No way! I was way past that point in my life.
After fifteen years of homeschooling, my youngest two were now attending school, and I knew I needed something more. Somehow, I felt that life had passed me by and I hadn’t accomplished a single thing. I couldn’t help but read the description on the job board. “Interns will create an educational program for their local national wildlife refuge (保护区). They will take a leadership role in designing youth environmental education curriculum on the site by authoring activity booklets and website content around the refuge.”
Create an educational program for a national wildlife refuge? We had spent the last years visiting national parks all over the country with our boys and participating in programs exactly like this. Last summer, we came in first place in the first-ever Great Outdoor Scavenger Hunt and visited twenty-two state parks throughout Texas. It sounded too good to be true, exactly the type of writing I’d love to be doing on a regular basis.
Then, I looked at the qualifications. “Enthusiastic people who are great at written communications.” Check. “Previous experience in environmental conservation or any science coursework.” Uncheck. I had absolutely none. I doubted my food and nutrition science classes in college were going to count for anything.
Not a single aspect of my job or educational experience matched these requirements. I figured I was too old, too unqualified … I dismissed the internship and continued looking at the “real jobs” on the job app. One morning days later, I was hiking at the local park near my kids’ school to avoid the rush-hour traffic going back home. As usual, I observed the natural beauty.

The Role of Humility at Work
There are many qualities that leaders must develop if they wish to have a meaningful impact in the workplace. But among these many important qualities, the value of humility seems to be frequently overlooked. Part of this is due to common misconceptions about what it means to be humble.
Humility tends to be overlooked in the workplace because it is frequently misinterpreted as a “weak” quality. We have been led to believe that people who are humble are easily bulldozed (欺负) by others and aren’t willing to stick up for themselves. Many define humility as having a low opinion of oneself. While this may be one widely accepted view of humility today, it is actually a far cry from the true meaning of the word—and the way it should be applied in leadership. Humility isn’t about being passive and weak. It’s about showing respect to others and recognizing truth in all situations, including in the workplace.
A humble professional sounds like the type of person that most of us would prefer to interact with on a daily basis. It is the type of person that can become a truly effective leader. “Humble leaders must be willing to evaluate criticism to determine if it’s valid or not,” said Christopher Ferry, founder of Boca Recovery Center. “The best leaders are willing to admit when they are wrong and view mistakes as learning opportunities so they can turn them into something transformative. In all my work developing the leadership skills of managers, if I could give them any quality with a magic stick, it would be humility.”
Though humility is often underrated by world at large, it’s essential if you want to be successful as a leader, not just at work but in life. Reject your idea to boast or lift yourself above anyone and decide to be at the service of others.

A new regulation by China’s Ministry of Education aims to grant primary and middle school teachers more room in punishing their students in order to achieve better teaching results.
The regulation lists punishments available to teachers in three categories based on the level of severity of the offense, including naming and shaming, forced standing that lasts no longer than one class session, and suspension of class for no longer than one week.
Zhang Lifeng, a 43-year-old parent, welcomed the move. “The regulation should have come earlier,” she said. “It will benefit both teachers and students as well as parents.”
However, a ninth grader at a middle school, disagreed. “It is normal for adolescent students to make mistakes. I don’t think punishments are necessary. They may cause more trouble,” he said.
Chen Xianzhe, a professor with the School of Education at South China Normal University, said punishments are just a part of the teaching process.
The regulation asks schools to draft their own regulations accordingly to clarify the rules for teachers in taking disciplinary actions against their students.

Silverton, Oregon, is a small, rural farming community south of Portland. It is located at the base of Silver Falls State Park, which boasts ten waterfalls and is an attraction for outdoor enthusiasts.
It's a friendly, tri-cultural town, and I worked there as an English Language Learners teacher for girls who grew up speaking Russian or Spanish.
One day, I asked the girls what careers they were interested in. Across the board, the same answer was either wife/mother or hairdresser. I was confused. These were bright girls with so much to offer—such promise and untapped potential. And yet, they saw only two paths in their futures.
These girls needed role models. They needed exposure to the working world so they could make informed decisions.
It was a dilemma. How could I help them? What resources were available?
I searched the Internet, and I found a gender(性别)equality grant through the state and applied. Much to my delight, we were selected. Together with two very qualified educational assistants, we started planning. We needed to enlist the help of successful working women. I wanted to arrange field trips to their workplaces, but I was stopped. The conservative parents would not allow their girls to travel.
I was not going to be derailed, so I started making phone calls and inviting presenters to come to our school. To my surprise, many of them agreed to make the trip. The girls listened attentively to their presentations and responded with reflective, in-depth questions.
The school year passed quickly. When our final presenter had left, I posed the same question to the girls. "What careers are you interested in?" This time, the responses were very different: social workers, accountants, educational professionals, bookkeepers, nurses, managers. The results surpassed our expectations.
When our grant finished at the end of the year, the students, assistants and I were sad to see the program end. We were seeing phenomenal results and receiving very positive feedback from parents and the school district.

Then one day, as I was sitting at my desk pondering our situation, I received a call from an educational research program in Portland.
