Simple Tips for Spending More Reading Time
Reading can make you understand life more. Then how to spend more time in reading?
Have a goal.
Some people set unrealistic goals for themselves like one book a week. Obviously you don’t have to be as radical as that. You can start by reading a book a month. Or a book every two month seven.
Read whenever you can.
Just start.
Sometimes our mind will make up all kinds of excuses not to do something. Not to get out of bed. Not to clean the house. Not to shower. The trick to get over this mental block is to just pick up the book and read!
Wherever I go, I’ve always got a book with me. Whenever I’m at home, a book is always near. That way, I don’t have to think much when the idea that I should maybe spend my free time reading comes into my head. I just grab the book and start reading.
Reading is a pleasure.
Obviously, to get yourself motivated to read, read something that interests you.
A.It is up to you. |
B.Always have your book in reach. |
C.Take some notes while reading a book. |
D.Find a good place for yourself to read in. |
E.Don’t pour too much thought into the action. |
F.It may be economy, animals, education—whatever you want. |

You read the brief introduction to a book, instantly become glued and now you’re in the middle of an absolute page-turner. But, there’s a hot debate — physical books VS. e-books VS. audiobooks.
Generally, reading uses several areas of the brain. There’s attention span, reasoning, reading fluency, memory and language comprehension. Reading is known to strengthen communicative ability, vocabulary and increase emotional intelligence and social perception.
But, let’s look at the pros to reading with your eyes — physical books and e-books. They can help to retain information better.
On the other hand, there’s the audiobook. Headphones in, you’re switched off from life and the story really comes alive, almost like watching a film — in your head. From a scientific perspective, listening to an audiobook is likely to help you develop a greater sense of empathy as you hear the emotion of the narrator.
A.You can more easily understand inflection (转调) and tone. |
B.So, whichever way you’re reading, there are benefits definitely. |
C.Does the device you’re using to read affect your reaction to the book? |
D.All in all, it seems that there are advantages to the three types mentioned above. |
E.Like e-books, physical books seem emotionless but make you free of distraction. |
F.In sum, there is no limit, which is decided by how much a person reads the rest of life. |
G.This is because when you can actually see the words, your attention is held more closely. |
【推荐3】Two years ago, Holmes participated in Back to School Bash. He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.
Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”
