Simple Tips for Spending More Reading Time

Reading can make you understand life more. Then how to spend more time in reading?

Have a goal.

Some people set unrealistic goals for themselves like one book a week. Obviously you don’t have to be as radical as that. You can start by reading a book a month. Or a book every two month seven.     1

Read whenever you can.

2     On the bus, on the subway, at your lunch break or when you’re at the gym. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Just start.

Sometimes our mind will make up all kinds of excuses not to do something. Not to get out of bed. Not to clean the house. Not to shower. The trick to get over this mental block is to just pick up the book and read!     3     Just do it. Once you start reading, if it’s a good book, it’s quite difficult to stop.

    4

Wherever I go, I’ve always got a book with me. Whenever I’m at home, a book is always near. That way, I don’t have to think much when the idea that I should maybe spend my free time reading comes into my head. I just grab the book and start reading.

Reading is a pleasure.

Obviously, to get yourself motivated to read, read something that interests you.     5     If you are drawn to the book, the more likely you’ll be excited to pick it up and read it.

A.It is up to you.
B.Always have your book in reach.
C.Take some notes while reading a book.
D.Find a good place for yourself to read in.
E.Don’t pour too much thought into the action.
F.It may be economy, animals, education—whatever you want.
G.Use every possible moment when you are free to enjoy the art of the written word.

【推荐1】As long as there have been exams, students have found ways to cheat. Today the correct answers are just a few taps away on a smart phone. So countries have come up with new ways to stop the funny business. Some use metal detectors, surveillance (监控) cameras, and mobile phone jammers (干扰器).    1

Cheating in high school leaving exams got so bad in Mauritania and Algeria that this year the authorities turned off the Internet for the entire country. Algeria did so for at least an hour during tests (which last about a week).    2    Other countries, such as Iraq, Uzbekistan and Ethiopia, have for years been shutting down the Internet during exam time.

In each country students are under high pressure to do well in the tests, which often determine whether they can continue their education at a good university.    3    But high marks are rare. In Algeria only around half of students passed the exams in recent years. In Mauritania the rate is much lower.

4    Darrell West of the Brookings Institution, a think-tank, estimates that in 2015-2016 Internet shutdowns ordered by governments cost countries at least $2.4bn.     5

A.Turning off the Internet is expensive.
B.Teachers try to help — in their own way.
C.Others have taken a more severe measure.
D.A splendid grade may mean a scholarship abroad.
E.Mauritania cut access from morning until evening on exam days.
F.For that kind of money, countries could even improve their schools.
G.With so many students cheating electronically, governments are taking extreme steps.

【推荐2】How to Recycle or Reuse Broken Stuff

A motor from a small appliance can be reused in many ways, including taking it apart to learn how motors work.    1    But there will be some things that you just can't fix-or can't find parts for. So what are you going to do with those things?    2

Recycle it

Because recycling is limited to local understanding and budgets, you may find that recycling things and parts may be quite easy or relatively difficult depending on where you live.    3    If you're rural and must take trash and recycling to a landfill, transfer station, or recycle center, contact the company to find out what it can use and what it can't, and whether there is a charge.

You also can find local recyclers in your local telephone book under headings like Recycle Centers and Scrap Metals.    4    PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic resin (树脂) used in many products and easily recycled into new products.

Reuse it

5    Think creatively before you banish (驱除) something from your household. For example, unrepairable clothing can become fix it shop rags or quilting squares. Extra drawers from a broken dresser can become under-bed storage containers. Ugly but usable hairdryers can be put to work thawing (解冻) frozen pipes. A senior center or homeless shelter may appreciate your old books and magazines.

A.How can I change broken things into new ones?
B.You can repair hundreds of household things that break.
C.Here's the page at Amazon with directions for repairing.
D.Many will pay you for cans, clear glass,PET plastics, and metals.
E.There are many things that you can reuse instead of recycling or throwing away.
F.The best place to learn about recycling is to call whatever company picks up your trash.
G.Consider the many creative ways of recycling and reusing before you throw away anything.

【推荐3】There’s a lot for teenagers to do! Trying new things is a great way to become more independent, explore your own interests and learn about other places and cultures.     1

What about going to a festival?     2     Camp Bestival has The Den, an area for 13-17 year olds, with music, DJs, workshops and activities-no adults allowed! The Larmer Tree Festival, a three-day music festival, has an excellent Youth Zone where you can have fun.     3     I’d also recommend(推荐) the Citadel. It is a one-day event, so it’s an ideal first-time festival.

Staying somewhere beautiful overnight is another option. The Youth Hostels Association has over 200 places to stay in England and Wales and many of them are close to national parks. The hostels are clean and warm, and they have everything you need. Last summer, I went youth hostelling for four days with a group of friends in the Peak District.     4     What we really liked was being able to cook all our own meals in the kitchen. A one-night stay costs less than $ 20, so it’s a bargain.

5     You won’t have to organise anything because there are adults to help. But don’t worry they won’t tell you what to do, and you’ll get a lot of freedom to do what you want. Some tours even include volunteer programmes, language programmes or specialties such as photography, so there is something for everyone. One thing is certain: you’ll meet lots of other young people and have a great time.

A.Camp Bestival and Larmer Tree are really teen-friendly.
B.We stayed each night at a different hostel.
C.You’ll need a separate ticket for each journey.
D.Here are just a few ideas.
E.You can enjoy different band performances.
F.It’s a great way to see some of Europe’s most amazing sights.
G.If you love travelling, you can join group tours for teens.
