If you’re in a hurricane-hit area and plan on riding it out, proper     1     (prepare) is key. And there is one thing     2     you should have around at all times: a plastic water bottle. Why? When the weather takes a turn for the worse, a water bottle is one of the useful     3     (thing) that you have in your home. It might even save your life. Severe flooding     4     (cause) by a hurricane can make the local drinking water dirty with some dangerous substances.     5     (avoid) a serious illness, it’s best to store plenty of bottled water to drink     6     (safe). 

That’s pretty obvious, of course. But keep those empty plastic bottles around after you drink, too, because they have lots of uncommon uses. For example,     7     empty water bottle can turn into a water filter(滤水器) if you need to drink from the tap. If your lights go out, don’t go the old-fashioned way with candles，you can rely     8     your handy plastic water bottles once again. Simply tape a small flashlight to the bottom of the bottle, and     9     (it) plastic and the water inside will amplify the glow(增强光亮). Then the little light can     10     (use) to light up a room or send signals to rescue personnel.

A terrible earthquake hit the city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, in which thousands of people died and many     1    (injure). Many houses fell down and sand filled the wells instead of water. People were greatly shocked. All the electricity in the city was cut     2    and people started to wonder how long the disaster would last. The whole city was     3    (complete) destroyed and the world seemed at     4    (it) end.

The people of Tangshan didn’t lose hope, because 150,000 soldiers were sent     5    (help) the rescue workers. The soldiers tried their best to dig out those     6    were trapped. Workers built shelters for the     7    (survive). Fresh water was taken to the city by every means. Slowly, the city started to come back to life.

It was said that before the quake, strange things were happening in     8    countryside. The water in the village wells     9    (rise) and fell. Fish jumped out of the ponds. Strange noises were heard in the sky,    10    people thought little of them.
