Craig watched his old sister, Riley, and her friend Liz race up and down the lake on their skates, avoiding other hockey(曲棍球) players. Their skate blades looked like silver smoke. When the game was over, the girls skated up to the bench where Craig was sitting. Craig asked Riley what skating felt like.
“When I go really fast, I feel like I am flying,” she said.
That is silly, thought Craig. Flying is something birds do in the air, not something people do on ice skates.
Then he watched Riley go back out on the ice. She skated around and around the edge of the lake with her arms pumping and her scarf trailing behind her. Soon she went so fast that her arms looked like wings and her scarf looked like a feathery tail. Maybe skating really was like flying.
When Riley sat down to take her skates off, Craig said, “I wish I could fly.”
Riley retied her skate laces and bent next to Craig. “Get on my back,” she said, and Craig did. Riley started skating, but Craig didn’t feel like he was flying. It just felt like a skating piggyback ride.
“You are too heavy,” Riley said, “I can’t go fast when I am carrying you.” She skated slowly back to the bench. Craig got off her back. “Even if you could go fast, I wouldn’t be flying.” he said sadly. “I need skates to fly.”
Riley didn’t say anything on the walk home, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating.
“To watch?” he asked. “No, to skate,” she said cheerfully. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.” The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed newspaper in the toes, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so he could walk to the lake. Riley and Liz went with him. They carried their hockey sticks and a wooden chair. Hardly had they got to the lake when Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice.

During the summer of 2021, Makyla Linder, like many kids, was bored. School was out and the spread of COVID-19 meant that most people had to stay at home. So the 12-year-old began watching videos about baking (烘焙) online. The only baking she had done before was helping out her grandmother. Soon, Makyla started baking on her own. She made cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries. She tested them out on her family and friends who came over.
For most kids, picking up a new hobby would have been enough. However, Makyla had bigger ideas. She asked her mom, Chelsea Hatcher, if she could start selling the treats she had created. “I said OK but I kept pushing it off. But she asked me a couple more times,” said Makyla’ s mom Chelsea Hatcher. Hatcher eventually agreed to let her daughter start a baking business. She helped Makyla buy more baking supplies. Meanwhile, Makyla focused on her baking research and worked on perfecting her recipes.
Makyla started out small, with new customers coming from recommendations. Then her mom helped her set up a business called Dolci Desserts and made an Instagram page. The page has a telephone number and an email address so people can place orders. The Dolci Desserts Instagram account has photos of the cakes for sale. There are chocolate-covered pretzeis and white chocolate-covered Oreos. There are also Rice Krispie treats and banana pudding. Makyla says she has about 30 customers. Many of them are returning customers.
“I like baking, and I like making my customers happy,” said Makyla. She also likes making her own money and saving it. She even bought herself a pair of new shoes.
Makyla’s success doesn’t surprise her mom. “She works hard,” said Hatcher. Still, lots of people have been amazed at a baker who’s so young. Generally, nobody will naturally expect that such a young teenager could make so wonderful cakes and even run an online company.
Para. 1: Shabria Miller, a neighbor of the family knows Makyla well and wanted to show support.

In a few short weeks I will be going to watch my 40th performance of Les Miserables (《悲惨世界》). I fell in love with the songs back in 1985 when they were first released — Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own. Even as a head teacher, I hadn’t read the Victor Hugo novel and knew very little about the musical, but the songs captured my attention instantly and I happily sang along whenever I heard them on the radio.
Five years later I set out on a trip around the world with my wife and daughter. On one of our stops in Vancouver, Canada, I saw a large advertising banner promoting Les Miserables and immediately suggested booking tickets. On the drive to the theatre, we discussed what we knew of the storyline — nothing but the French Revolution. But we did love the rollercoaster ride of emotions and the tragic story of Jean Valjean when enjoying it.
On the late-night drive home, on a high after this amazing performance, I announced that I wanted to perform in the musical when we returned to Australia. This was an incredible statement, given we lived 50 kilometers from the nearest large town, Toowoomba. There was little likelihood of ever having a chance to perform. But the Toowoomba Choral Society bought the performance rights in 1992 with the view to perform it in 1994. I had seen a few of their performances but was not a member of the choir. They called for auditions and, emboldened by the chance to be part of the “Les Mis” experience, I went along. I had had no experience singing and had never performed in any musicals but I believed in miracles and hoped for a place for me somewhere in the chorus.
I tried out for the part of Javert with others as well as the students from the University of Southern Queensland. Rehearsals (排练) started immediately and I got a crash course in singing, acting and dancing. There was so much to learn and as I drove to rehearsals three times a week a little voice would say, “You are in over your head, get out now.”
