You go to a gym to train your muscles. You run or hike to build your endurance.     1     Training it could not only speed up your memory recall, but also help you learn faster. Try some of the following basic methods to work your mental powers.

Sleep, it turns out, is a very important factor when keeping your mind in tip-top shape. Any lack of rest or relaxation, and excessive stress can seriously reduce the efficiency of your brain function. The human brain requires a large amount of energy to function.     2     So, make sure you get enough shut-eye!

Don’t underestimate (低估) the power of reading. Reading can improve your mind. Reading also improves your general knowledge, making you more capable of holding conversations and relating concepts.     3     While this might not be possible for you, you really should carve out time to read for at least an hour a day.

4     Getting into the habit of constantly taking notes or writing down things or ideas effectively creates an extension of your mind. By daily recording your thoughts, you will enable yourself to think more clearly and thoroughly. One of those random thoughts could be your path to freedom and fortune.

A change is as good as a rest. New experiences force your brain to grow new pathways.     5     Your days were a constant trial and error exercise. Each and every experience strengthens the neural (神经的) pathways and makes a task much easier until it becomes second nature.

A.A persistent lack of sleep also can reduce your IQ.
B.Listening to music makes you smart.
C.But what can you do to train your brain?
D.Think about when you were a small child.
E.Keeping a diary might be a good idea for all of us.
F.Go to your school library and study more.
G.It is said that highly successful people read, on average, one book a week.

【推荐1】In the past decade or so, you may have heard the term “growth mindset” thrown around a lot. Many influencers and self-improvement coaches talk about how important it is to have a growth mindset and say it is something we should try hard to achieve.     1     Here are a few ways you can start training your brain.

Start worrying if you’re working hard enough.

As Carol S. Dweck explains, “Genius is not enough; we need to get the job done.” At the end of the day, does it really matter how intelligent you are if you get the job done? Of course not.     2     Stop judging your worth based on how smart you think yourself to be, and start focusing on trying your best, learning along the way, and enjoying the process.

    3

People with fixed mindsets often see failures as reflections of their own intelligence(智力) or skill, so they end up giving up when meeting with disappointment. But instead of seeing failure as a negative thing, see it as an opportunity to learn something. If this set of actions resulted in failure, how could you change things next time to result in success? This is a huge part of developing a growth mindset.

Praise effort rather than outcomes.

In Dweck’s book, she writes, “After seven experiments with hundreds of children, we had some of the clearest findings I’ve ever seen:     4     Children love praise, especially to be praised for their intelligence and talent. It really does inspire them, but only for the moment. The minute they experience difficulties, their confidence goes out the window, and their motivation hits rock bottom. If success means they’re smart, then failure means they’re stupid.     5

In whatever small ways you can, begin to explore what it feels like to have a growth mindset. With a growth mindset, anything is possible. You may just be surprised at all the amazing things you complete.

A.Take on new challenges.
B.That’s the fixed mindset.
C.Regard failures as learning opportunities.
D.How can we develop a growth mindset?
E.The most important thing is whether you put in your best effort.
F.Even if you congratulate yourself, you may end up hurting in the long term.
G.Praising children’s intelligence harms their motivation, and it harms their performance.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,作者在文章里给出了减少回家作业量的四种方法。

【推荐2】Homework is a major part of going to school: It’s your teacher’s way of evaluating (评估) how much you understand of what’s going on in class.     1     Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to.     2     It’s much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

Use any extra time in school to work on your homework.

Many schools have study hall that is specifically designed to allow students to study. It’s tempting (吸引人的) to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured (零散的) time.     3

Take a break

4     So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

    5

If you don’t finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most high-school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it’s a heavy homework day and it seems like you’ve got an assignment in every subject but gym and lunch, you’ll need to devote more time to homework. It’s a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule, especially if you are involved in sports or activities or have an after-school job.

A.Pace yourself.
B.Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what’s expected.
C.Once your homework is done, you can check it over if you have extra time.
D.But the more work you can get done in school, the less you’ll have to do that night.
E.Settle down to do homework.
F.And it helps digest important concepts.
G.Most people’s attention spans aren’t very long.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述了如何学会负责任。

【推荐3】Learn to Be Accountable (负责任的)

How does it feel when you own up to something? Taking responsibility for your actions not only feels good, it also teaches you to trust yourself and strengthens friendships.     1

What does being accountable mean?

It can be easy to blame others or make excuses for mistakes, but being accountable means accepting that you are responsible for what you say and do.     2     You could easily say the bus was late, but being accountable means apologizing and accepting that it was your responsibility to get there on time. However, being accountable doesn’t mean taking the blame for things you can’t change, such as what other people do or say. You’re only accountable for things you can control.

    3

According to research, understanding that you have control over your own actions makes you feel more positive and hopeful about the future. Taking responsibility can make other people trust you more as well. It is also an opportunity to fix your mistakes and learn from them, which helps you to trust yourself more too.

How can I be accountable?

4     One way of doing this is by drawing a circle of control to help you work this out. As well as being responsible for what you can change, try accepting the things you can’t. The Big Life Journal says, “We can’t always control what happens to us, but we do have a say in how we respond to it. We can still choose our attitude.” Finally, being accountable also includes taking responsibility when things go right, too.     5

A.How is being accountable good for me?
B.How does being accountable make me feel?
C.Start by understanding what is in and out of your control.
D.Imagine arranging to meet a friend and then turning up late.
E.Remember no one is perfect and everyone messes up sometimes.
F.Remember to celebrate and feel good about yourself when this happens.
G.Besides, being accountable can improve your happiness and help achieve more.
