These Christmassy reads are sure to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy (迷糊的) inside as the long winter nights draw in.
Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May
May writes sadly about her experience of her husband’s sudden illness and how this event caused major life shifts, both personally and professionally. Her descriptions of staying with the Samí people when visiting Troms, of sea swimming in the winter, of a solstice (冬至) spent at Stonehenge, and the making of slow-cooked meals provides relief when reading alongside such honest descriptions of her own periods of Wintering.
The Christmas Chronicles for Midwinter by Nigel Slater
Nigel Slater describes himself as “a cook who writes” and this sensually written book contains the basic elements of the festive season: food, homesickness, and generosity.
Part memoir (回忆录), part recipe book interwoven with myth and folktale, Slater shares his love for winter through his warm narrative voice. As he says, “The simple act of making someone something to eat, even a bowl of soup or a loaf of bread, has a many-layered meaning. It suggests an act of protection and caring, of generosity and a close interpersonal relationship.”
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie
I for one cannot resist a good detective novel, especially one set during Christmas. Our beloved detective Hercule Poirot is charged with solving the bloody murder of multimillionaire Simeon Lee, which takes place on Christmas Eve following a family gathering. Christie’s trademark dilemma takes the form of a murder in a room locked from the inside…
A satisfying read filled with all the elements I love most about a good Victorian detective novel: a strikingly old-fashioned village, a murder-mystery set in a country estate, and unreliable characters.

When Williams, now 54, became a primary school teacher in Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to read books.
“Kids who are read to perform much better than those who are not,” she said. To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
She said, “I wanted to do something.”
So she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number. However, Williams posted on the Internet: “Don’t complain (抱怨) if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.” She got to work, first by advising friends to give away books or money to buy books. Soon, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started putting books in front of her door. As quickly as the books came in, Williams gave them to local schools for free.
In the four years, Williams has given away more than 78,000 books-only 922,000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing down. “Reading can take you anywhere,” she said. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

It says 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of permanently damaging their hearing by listening to “too much, too loudly”.
It said audio devices(音频设备), concerts and bars were causing a “serious threat”.
WHO figures show 43 million people aged 12-35 have hearing loss and the number is increasing. In that age group, the WHO said, half of the people in rich and middle-income countries were exposed to unsafe sound levels from personal audio devices. Meanwhile 40% were exposed to damaging levels of sound from clubs and bars.
The proportion of US teenagers with hearing loss went from 3.5% in 1994 to 5.3% in 2006.
“What we’re trying to do is raise awareness of the problem that is not talked about enough, but has the potential to do a lot of damage that can be easily prevented,” said Dr Etienne Krug, the WHO’s director for injury prevention.
The full report argued: “While it is important to keep the volume down, limiting the use of personal audio devices to less than one hour a day would do much to reduce noise exposure.”
Dr Krug said: “That’s a rough recommendation, it is not by the minute, to give an idea to those spending 10 hours a day listening to an mp3-player. But even an hour can be too much if the volume(音量)is too loud.”
1. What might be the main cause of hearing loss according to the passage?
A.Listening to music frequently. |
B.Listening to music at concerts. |
C.Listening to too much and too loud music. |
D.Listening to music from poor audio devices. |
A.3.5%. | B.5.3%. | C.40%. | D.50 %. |

B.One hour of exposure to loud music a day will do no damage to hearing. |
C.With proper volume, one can listen to an mp3-player for 10 hours a day. |
D.It will be OK to be exposed to loud noise from personal audio devices. |

Nearly 4,000 health care workers, first responders and firefighters in six states took part in the study led by CDC researchers. From December 14 through March 13, the workers submitted weekly nasal swabs(鼻拭子) for coronavirus testing. Infection rates fell after vaccination. “Our study shows that if you were fully vaccinated, you had 90 percent protection from infection”, says Jeff Burgess.
Other studies carried out in California and Texas also seem to back up the findings, researchers say in separate reports published March 23 in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the Texas report, 234 of 8,969 non-vaccinated employees at the University of Texas Southwester Medical Center in Dallas tested positive for the coronavirus from December 15 to January 28. That’s 2.61 percent, compared with 1. 82 percent (112 of 6, 144) of employees that had gotten one shot and 0. 05 percent (four of 8, 121) of fully vaccinated employees.
In the California report, infections among health care workers also fell with increasing vaccination levels. Only seven infections occurred among 4, 167 people who were at least 15 days out from getting their second dose of vaccine. The vaccines prevented health care workers in the study from becoming serious ill, says study coauthor Francesca Torriani, a professor at the University of California, San Diego.
But to really stop transmission of the virus, it’s important to vaccinate 18- to 30-year-olds, she says, “Those are the ones who are right now transmitting the disease.” Motivating these health people who are less likely to become severely ill in the first place to take the shots could be difficult, Torriani says, “There’s not much in it for them, but there is a lot in it for their families, so I’m hoping that realization will push them toward getting vaccinated.”
Because some vaccinated people can still get infected, the CDC recommends that people who have gotten their shots continue to wear masks in public to avoid spreading the virus.

Instead, they are using glass containers or creating “bring your own cup” policies. The movement started among neighborhood cafes in an effort to reduce waste. Now it is gaining support from large businesses in the city—and around the country.
Famous cook Dominique Crenn is opening a cafe in San Francisco next year that will not use to-gabags, throw-away coffee cups or any plastic. Diners who plan to buy a to-go drink from boutique Crenn will be asked to bring their own coffee cups, a spokeswoman said.
The Blue Bottle coffeehouse company uses about 15,000 to-go cups each month at its 70 shops across the U.S. The company recently said it wants to “show our guests and the world that we can get rid of disposable (一次性的) cups”.
Blue Bottle plans to stop using paper cups at two of its stores next year. The move is part of a promise to produce “zero waste” by the end of next year.
Larger coffee and fast-food businesses around the U. S. are feeling a sense of urgency (紧急) to be more environmentally friendly, said Bridget Croke. She is with the New York-based investment company Closed Loop Partners. It is working with Starbucks and McDonald’s to develop a substitute (替代品) for the disposable coffee cup.
Today’s to-go cups for hot drinks are not only made from paper, they also have plastic to prevent leaking. This makes them hard to recycle, Croke said. She admitted that it is not likely that large national food and drink companies will stop using disposable cups totally or ask all customers to bring their own.
So, her company is looking for other solutions. In partnership with Closed Loop, Starbucks and McDonald’s paid $10 million to develop the “single-use cup of the future”. The result is expected to be recyclable and to break down naturally.
