2     You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线).

Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing.     3

Also keep away from a fire.     4

If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it’s safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don’t drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。文章主要介绍非洲部分地区的蝗虫灾的情况。

【推荐1】Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts(蝗虫) that are travelling across the continent eating everything in their path.

And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. “We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts,” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-FM, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected areas.

This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they produce young and increase their number and will soon threaten(威胁) Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.

Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well equipped to fight the pest.

Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough. “We are now treating 6, 000 hectares(公顷) per day with pesticide(杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20, 000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster,” said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.

“Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the disaster,” the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations warned.

D.showed the large number of the locusts

C.How locusts caused great damage to West Africa.
D.A struggle to fight against a disaster brought by locusts in West Africa.
3. The locust disaster _________.
A.would be even more serious in Asia
B.is out of control
C.affected only the warning areas
D.cannot be stopped unless twice as much pesticide is provided for the affected areas
4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Sud-FM offered a reward for fighting locusts so that more people would join in the effort.
B.Senegal is to the west of Sudan.
C.The locusts can cause such damage mainly because they have no natural enemy in West Africa.
D.12 countries affected by locusts have agreed on a plan.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了海地2010年和2021年发生地震的情况以及2016年遭受飓风袭击的情况。

【推荐2】On August 14, 2021, Haiti was hit by a7.2 magnitude(级数)earthquake. The quake destroyed thousands of buildings, injured over 5,700 people, and left at least 1,297 others dead. Haiti has declared a state of emergency(紧急情况).

The earthquake struck near the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, in the western part of the country. That’s roughly 125 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake did serious damage in two nearby cities, Les Cayes and Jeremie, with Les Cayes hit the hardest. Homes, schools, churches, and offices were seriously damaged.

The number of injured people was so high that local hospitals have been unable to keep up. A number of medical workers at the general hospital in Les Cayes were themselves trapped in a building. Across the area, people were searching through the rubble(废墟) for survivors. But the earthquake also caused landslides(塌方), making the job even more difficult. There have been many aftershocks—smaller quakes which follow the main earthquake. With many buildings damaged by the earthquake, it’s not certain whether the buildings still standing in the area are safe. Many people are choosing to sleep outside rather than taking the risk of sleeping in a building.

Haiti has still not fully returned to normal from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which destroyed much of Port-au-Prince and killed over 200,000 people in 2010. The country suffered again in 2016, when it was pounded(袭击) by Hurricane Matthew, which caused huge damage in Haiti. Storm Grace is expected to reach Haiti on Monday, bringing heavy rainfall with it.

Several countries have offered to help Haiti. The government says the country won’t officially ask for outside help until it is clear how much damage there is in all. But Haiti is not a rich country, and the government may not have the money for major efforts to rebuild the damaged areas.

1. Which was worst affected by this year’s earthquake?
A.Port-au-Prince.B.Jeremie.C.Les Cayes.D.Petit Trou de Nippes.
2. What does the underlined part “the job” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Dealing with landslides.B.Searching for survivors.
C.Observing aftershocks.D.Doing building safety-checks.
3. What do we know about Haiti?
A.It has begun to rebuild after this year’s earthquake.
B.It has just recovered from the 2010 earthquake.
C.It suffered from two kinds of hurricanes in 2016.
D.It has experienced serious disasters in recent years.
4. What is Haiti’s attitude to seeking foreign aid?
A.Doubtful.B.Favored.C.Cautious.D.Disapproving.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了飓风艾达给墨西哥湾沿岸居民造成的破坏,以及人们灾后重建的情况。

【推荐3】After being attacked by Hurricane Ida’s 150 mph winds and torrential rains, hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents were left without power and fresh water this week as a 100-degree heat wave settled over the region. Ida smashed into Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, ripping off roofs, knocking out transmission lines, flooding roads, and reducing some brick buildings in downtown New Orleans to rubble. At least eight people died in the storm and the toll is expected to rise as emergency workers search wrecked homes and businesses.

One of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. mainland, Ida brought a 5 to 12-foot storm surge that covered low-lying communities in southeastern Louisiana. Grand Isle is now “uninhabitable,” said Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng, with 3 feet of sand covering the entire barrier island and 40 percent of the buildings completely destroyed.

The storm caused a citywide blackout in New Orleans, but a Hurricane Katrina-level disaster was avoided there, thanks in part to the $ 14.5 billion spent on new levees, seawalls, and pumps after the 2005 storm. Experts are warning that Ida could worsen the Covid crisis in the Gulf Coast, as residents crowd together in homes and emergency shelters without immediate access to testing or medical care. ICUs in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama hospitals were already near capacity be- fore the storm hit. Nearly 1 million people are still without power across Louisiana, and authorities waned it could be weeks before electricity is restored. “If you have already evacuated,” said Gov. John Bel Edwands, “do not return here.”

1. Which of the following best describes Hurricane Ida?
A.Mild.B.Destructive.C.Uncontrollable.D.Impressive.
2. What does the underlined words “the toll” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.The death number.B.The heat wave.
C.The wind speed.D.The citywide blackout.
3. What is one of the reasons for Grand Isle to be uninhabitable?
A.The entire island is covered with sand.B.It is one of the low-lying communities.
C.The residents there can't wait to leave.D.Over half of its buildings were in ruins.
4. What can be inferred about the attitude of Gov. John Bel Edwards towards the prospect of Louisiana?
A.AmbitiousB.Undoubted.C.Indifferent.D.Unconfident.
