Here are four traditional festivals in Spain.
Saint John’s Eve
Saint John’s Eve is a midsummer celebration being celebrated at the eve of the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist. According to a legend, Saint John was born six months before Jesus, so the day of Saint John the Baptist was set to be celebrated six months before Christmas. Nowadays, for most people Saint John’s Eve just marks the start of summer.
Festival of Saint Fermin
The festival is held annually in Pamplona, Spain, beginning at noon on July 6 and ending at midnight on July 14, honoring the city’s first bishop and patron saint, Saint Fermin. The festival involves traditions such as running, bullfighting and fireworks.
Fallas in Valencia
This festival involves statues that have been constructed all year round being placed all around Valencia. That is not all. All of the statues at the end of the festival are just burned right in front of everyone’s eyes. It is an annual celebration held in March. During the week of Fallas you will hear a lot of fire crackers exploding and beautiful ladies and girls called falleras being dressed in traditional Spanish dresses.
La Tomatina in Bunol
Have you ever wanted to throw something at someone’s face? Well, La Tomatina festival will let you take out all your frustrations! This crazy tradition started more than 70 years ago and is celebrated every last Wednesday of August in Bunol. In this festival 20,000 people throw tomatoes at each other. For what? You might ask. January 1, the beginning of a new year.
As far back in history as we can tell, people have celebrated the start of a new year. The people of ancient Egypt began their new year in summer. That is when the Nile River flooded its banks, bringing water and fertility(肥沃)to the land. The people of ancient Babylonia(巴比伦)and Persia(波斯)began their new year on March 21, the first day of spring. And some native American Indians began their new year when the nuts of the oak(橡木)tree became ripe. That was usually in late summer.
Now almost everyone celebrates New Year's Day on January 1. Today, as before, people observe the New Year's holiday in many different ways. The ancient Babylonians celebrated it by forcing their king to give up his crown(王冠)and royal clothing. They made him get down on his knees and admit all the mistakes he had made during the past year. This idea of admitting wrongs and finishing the business of the old year is found in many societies.
Noise-making is another ancient custom in the new year. The noise is considered necessary to chase away(赶走)the evil spirits of the old year. People around the world do different things to make a lot of noise. They may hit sticks together, beat drums, blow horns, or explode fireworks.
Americans celebrate New Year in many ways. Most do not have to go to work or school. So they visit family and friends, share a holiday meal, or watch New Year's parades on television. Most years, university teams play in special holiday games. For those who have been busy at work or school, New Year's Day may be a day of rest. They spend the time thinking about and preparing for the demands of New Year.

Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones, “They give out no pollutants, they’re reusable, and there’s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”
Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals — from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. “They’ve often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks,” he said.
But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event.”
And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn’t mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.

The African elephant’s genome (基因组) contains the largest number of olfactory receptor (嗅觉感受器) genes—nearly 2, 000—says the study in the journal Genome Research.
Olfactory receptors are aware of smells in the environment.
That means elephants’ sniffers (嗅探器) are five times more powerful than people’s noses, twice that of dogs, and even stronger than the previous known record-holder in the animal kingdom: rats.
“Apparently, an elephant’s nose is not only long but also superior, ”says lead study author Yoshihito Niimura of the University of Tokyo.
Just how these genes work is not well understood, but they likely helped elephants survive and navigate their environment over the ages.
The ability to smell allows creatures to find mates and food—and avoid predators.
The study compared elephant’s olfactory receptor genes to those of 13 other animals, including horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, cows, rodents and chimpanzees.
Primates (灵长类) and people actually had very low numbers of olfactory receptor genes compared to other species, the study found.
“This could be a result of our decreased reliance on smell as our sight improved, ” Niimura says.
1. Why do African elephants have the strongest sense of smell?A.Because their noses are very superior. |
B.Because they have more olfactory receptor genes. |
C.Because they are very strong. |
D.Because they have long noses. |
A.Human. | B.Dog. | C.Rat. | D.Elephant. |
A.Their genes. | B.Their noses. | C.Their legs. | D.Their ears. |
A.To find mates. | B.To have fun. |
C.To find food. | D.To escape from hunters. |
A.People find elephants are very useful. |
B.People like elephants’ noses. |
C.Elephants possess “superior” sense of smell. |
