We all have things that we want to achieve in our lives-getting into the better shape, building a successful business, raising a wonderful family, and so on.    1    , At least, this is how I approached my life goals until recently.

What I’m starting to realize, however, is that when it comes to actually getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a much better way to do things. It all comes down to the difference between goals and systems.    2     Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week. Now for the really interesting question: If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get tcstilts? I think you would.

3     In the last 12 months, I’ve written over 115, 000 words. The typical book is about 50, 000 to 60, 000 words, so I have written enough to fill two books this year. All of this is such a surprise because I never set a goal for my writing. I didn’t measure my progress in relation to some benchmark.     4     1 never said, “I want to write two books this year.” What I did focus on was writing one article every Monday and Thursday. I focused on my system and the process of doing the work. And after sticking to that schedule for 11 months, the result was 115, 000 words. In the end,I enjoyed the same (or perhaps better) results.

Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress.Goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win. Having a system is what matters.     5

A.None of this is to say that goals are useless.
B.If you’re a writer, your goal is to write a book.
C.Forget about predicting the future and build a system.
D.I never set a word count goal for any particular article.
E.Committing to the process is what makes the difference.
F.And for most of us, the path to those things starts by setting a specific goal.
G.As an example, I just added up the total word count for the articles I’ve written this year.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者谈到在游历罗马时印象最深的是自拍杆,由此论述了拍照对我们旅行体验的影响以及如何获得最持久的记忆。

【推荐1】We visited Rome for the first time a few years ago, and my memories aren't ones of buildings, statues, or even the food. It's the selfie-sticks—being sold on every street corner. and being put to use everywhere we went. People were photographing themselves often without bothering to look at all the beauty behind them.

Occasionally I joined in myself, taking pictures as souvenirs of my trip to share with others. But I also made an effort to look around, and to record with my memory—because I know just how important that is.

When we take pictures, we may improve our chances of remembering the facts, but we don't see the “big picture”. And by not stretching our recall muscles regularly, we don't strengthen particular memories. That's especially true if we're always photographing ourselves. Posed, static selfies reveal little about what's happening around us, or how we were really feeling at the time.

Get into the habit of capturing experiences with your mind. Consciously take in everything around you. Use all your senses, not just your eyes. Be aware of your thoughts and feelings, too. Later, you can use the pictures on your camera to kick-start your recall. But you can also add all those extra layers of detail back in, to relive the moment in its full glory.

It's a great habit to get into. You'll experience more because you' re not fussing with your phone. You'll create more durable memories by returning to them again and again. You'll also be exercising your brain, which is the best way to keep it working well for everything. And in the process, I bet you'll discover that your memory is by far the most interesting lens through which to look back at your past.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To present a fact.B.To offer an example.
C.To make a prediction.D.To introduce a topic.
2. What do we usually ignore when taking pictures?
A.The whole view.B.Photography skills.
C.The selfie gesture.D.Advanced cameras.
3. What's the author's attitude towards photographic memory?
A.Favorable.B.Neutral.C.Critical.D.Delighted.
4. How can we create durable memory?
A.By exercising the brain to recall.B.By returning to the place again.
C.By forming a habit of using eyes.D.By reviewing pictures on the phone.

【推荐2】My parents both left school at 14. They could read and write, but except for a quick look at the daily newspaper, reading and writing didn't play a big part in their lives. There were very few books in the house. When I was only 14 years old my father gave me an important letter that he'd written to the bank and asked me to check it for grammar and spelling mistakes. And there were quite a lot. He never wrote letters or postcards or even Christmas cards. So when he had to write he wasn't comfortable or confident. Does that mean that my father had a ‘low level of literacy (读写能力)’? I don't think so.

There are lots of different definitions (定义) of literacy. Some experts define it as having the reading and writing skills that you need to be independent in your everyday life. So, for example, if you can read instructions, write a cheque, fill in a form — anything that you need to do in everyday life — then you are ‘functionally literate’.

If you live in a society where most people are literate then you will feel ashamed and avoid situations in which you have to read or write. A friend's father finally admitted to his family that he couldn't read when he was 45 years old. He had bought the newspaper every day and pretended to read it.

Being illiterate can have a big effect on people's lives. Worldwide statistics show that literacy problems are associated with poverty and a lack of political power. More women than men are illiterate. Illiterate people have worse health, bigger families and are more likely to go to prison. So literacy campaigns must be a good thing. But don't forget that an illiterate person, or someone with a low level of literacy, isn't necessarily stupid or ignorant (无知的) — and may not be unhappy at all. Knowledge and wisdom isn't only found in writing.

1. What do we know about the author's father?
A.He read a lot.B.He rarely wrote.
C.He couldn't write.D.He bought many books.
2. What does the author say about “functionally literate” people?
A.They are usually mind readers.
B.They can read between the lines.
C.They are mainly dependent on others.
D.They are able to read and write to survive.
3. Why did the friend's father buy the newspaper regularly?
A.To keep his secret.
B.To be fashionable.
C.To enjoy the daily news.
D.To further his study
4. What is literacy irrelevant to according to the author?
A.Health.B.Poorness.
C.Influence.D.Happiness.

【推荐3】Over 30 years ago, I stood in the front row of a kindergarten performance, singing to all the parents of the elementary school. At the end of the performance, Mrs. Summers, whom I always tried to impress, made a statement that would impact me for nearly a lifetime. She walked up to my mom and stated, “She certainly was the most excited and eager student I had this year, but she couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.”

From that day on, I was always insecure about my singing. Singing became an embarrassment for me and I didn’t want anyone to hear me. When I was home alone, I would belt out (大声唱) songs as if I was singing on the stage. Though I felt insecure, it made my heart dance and my soul get free.

When I started attending church regularly, a woman came up to me and asked why I didn’t join the choir. She stated that I had a beautiful singing voice and appeared to greatly enjoy singing. I laughed and said she must have been joking. With a look of surprise, she simply suggested that I should think about it because I would be a nice addition to the choir.

Why did I have such a hard time allowing others to hear me sing? It was because I had believed some words that came out of my teacher’s mouth as a child. Mrs. Summers was probably trying to be humorous, but as a child, her comment truly hurt me. So I made a decision to stop believing the words I held on to for so many years. The following week, I joined the choir, and I began to feel better. Now I sing in the streets, and I sing in the gym. It doesn’t matter if I can carry a tune in a basket; I carry it on my heart.

1. How did Mrs. Summers think of the author’s performance in the kindergarten?
A.She had a great talent for singing.B.She was too nervous to sing well.
C.Her singing voice was distinctive.D.Her singing was rather out of tune.
2. How did the author feel when she heard Mrs. Summers’ words?
A.Annoyed.B.Abandoned.C.Discouraged.D.Wronged.
3. What can we learn about the woman the author met in the church?
A.She played a joke on the author.
B.She knew the author’s problem.
C.She wanted to sing like the author.
D.She appreciated the author’s voice.
4. What does the author intend to tell us in the text?
A.Don’t act for others’ judgement.B.Love whatever you want to do.
C.Learn from your past mistakes.D.Hard work will finally pay off.
