There are several changes in the procedure for employees who wish to apply for vacant positions within the company. These changes make it much easier for in-house employees to fill vacancies that occur.
First, the most important difference is that employees will now be notified of all available positions before the positions are advertised for the general public. Accordingly, all in-house candidates will be interviewed before we see any outside candidates, and we will offer the job to outside candidates only if no current employees are able to fill the position.
Second, under the new procedure, in-house employees can be hired even if they don’t meet all job requirements. Under our old policy, in-house employees had to meet all job qualifications in order to obtain the vacant position. Now, however, employees who have proven themselves dedicated to the company will be hired for a vacant position even if they are lacking in some minor qualifications; training will be provided.
A third change involves recommendations. From now on, employees do not need to be recommended for an in-house position before they apply. Instead, employees may apply as soon as they are aware of the vacancy. The remaining procedures and policies (those regarding increase in pay, interview procedure, and hiring approval) remain the same.
1. What can we infer from the second change?A.It becomes difficult for the company to find qualified employees. |
B.The employees’ loyalty is highly valued by the company. |
C.The company has lowered the requirements for some positions. |
D.More and more training will be offered by the company. |
A.A job application. | B.An interview. |

A.More outside applicants will be attracted. |
B.Higher salaries will be offered to the employees. |
C.The procedures of vacancy application will be simplified. |
D.In-house employees will have a better chance to fill the vacancy. |
A.On a poster about the company. |
B.In a hiring advertisement. |
C.In an inter-department email. |
D.In a personal notebook. |

The day begins early for Minzhe. It is only 5 o’clock in the morning, and he has already started working.
Minzhe owns a large tea plantation (种植园) in his hometown in Guilin, Guangxi. It covers an area of more than 350 square (平方) meters. The tea farmer walks through the plants slowly. He carefully presses a leaf between his thumb (拇指) and index finger (食指) and gently picks it.

I imagined each light was a fairy with long hair. But fireflies are disappearing. While the exact reason isn't known, several factors are suspected: habitat (栖息地) loss, light pollution and harmful chemicals.
As the human population continues to grow, more and more wild habitats will be developed for our use. The more we destroy forest land, the fewer fireflies there will be--- unless we start living in some totally different ways.
Another part of the problem is light pollution. Both female and male fireflies use their glowing lights to communicate with one another to find mates. Research has shown that lights — both streetlights or lights from a house, and temporary, like car headlights — make it harder for fireflies to communicate. If mom and dad fireflies can’t find each other to mate (交配) because they're thrown off by car headlights, young fireflies never get created.
White firefly number will continue to decline in some places, in others they're becoming an attraction. In China, firefly pupae (蛹) were brought into some special parks. One of the first of these parks, in the city of Wuhan in Hubei province, opened in 2015. The response was so positive that the park planned to open annually.
Kids who grow up without fireflies will never know what they're missing. The little lovely bugs are a magical addition to the landscape, but once they die out, they will exist only in the memories of older people. If you'd like to keep fireflies around in real life, you can help create firefly habitats in and around your own home.
1. What might cause the number of fireflies to decrease?A.The effect of air pollution. |
B.The loss of natural habitats. |
C.The growth of population. |

A.likely to get lost | B.find mates easily |
C.lose sight temporarily | D.unable to produce young |

One of the biggest challenges facing brick-and-mortar retailers (实体零售店) in recent years has been the “showrooming”. Driven by the desire to get the best prices, many shoppers are now visiting brick-and-mortar stores to personally check on products that interest them, only to leave and then buy the items online. The new trend is forcing retailers to find out new ways to keep consumers from leaving their store for cheaper prices online.
Recent research found that 40 percent of U.S. shoppers have showroomed previously, with big-box retailers suffering the most. Specifically, the study shows that Best Buy, Walmart and Target are the most likely brick-and-mortar stores to have shoppers test out a product in-store and then purchase it online later, while Amazon is benefiting most from the practice, with nearly 60 percent of shoppers using the online retail giant (巨人) most often to make their showrooming purchases.
Smartphones have pushed showrooming into the front. Shoppers no longer have to wait until they get home to see if they can find a cheaper price for the products they’re considering buying. With smartphones, consumers can now compare virtual prices, at both other brick-and-mortar stores and online ones while still inside a retail store. If they can find what they’re seeking for less online, the majority will be seeking the first exit. A recent study showed that 45 percent of customers shopping at brick-and-mortar stores walk out and buy their purchase online for a discount of as little as 2.5 percent.
This puts pressure on retailers to provide both an in-store experience worth staying for and an online presence that can attract shoppers who are showrooming in other businesses.
To cut down on showrooming, many retailers are adopting new methods to keep shoppers in their stores. Among the steps they’re taking are price-matching assurances that allow shoppers to pay a discounted price if they find it cheaper online. This ensures that even a showrooming shopper can make the purchase in the store — regardless of whether they find the cheaper price online.
Another popular method to fight against showrooming is to give shoppers the ability to buy something online and pick it up at the store. This reduces shipping costs and gets customers in the store, where they may be encouraged to make an additional purchase.
It is also important for businesses to take into consideration what makes shoppers purchase something in-store rather than online, and meet those needs. Research has found that more than 8 in 10 Americans consider being able to take the goods home immediately and the ability to touch and feel them—the most important aspects when deciding to purchase in a store rather than online.
1. What contributes to the growing popularity of showrooming?A.The wide use of smartphones. | B.The competition between big stores. |
C.The advertisement by online retail giants. | D.The decline of the brick-and-mortar stores. |
A.searching for lower prices | B.leaving as soon as possible |
C.locating the first exit quickly | D.making a purchase on the spot |
A.increasing sales at stores | B.preventing purchase online |
C.satisfying customers’ needs | D.advising shoppers to buy more |

However, according to historian Dr Neil Armstrong, the naming of Boxing Day dates back to the 17th century. This was the day, he said, when apprentices would have a box for their employers to tip them a coin or two. While the boxes may have disappeared, the custom of tipping has remained.
In the Victorian age, the custom evolved. On Boxing Day, most tradespeople would give their clients a gift to ensure their custom. There were concerns, said Dr Armstrong, that this was a form of bribery (行贿). This custom declined in the 20th century as fewer people had relationships with their local businesses and shops following the rise of supermarkets and shopping centres.
“It may not be the reason why Boxing Day got its name, but charitable giving was closely associated with Boxing Day in the Victorian era, "said Dr Armstrong. "In the mid-19th century there began to be indiscriminate (随意的) charitable giving. This would often be begging, and children were usually sent out to do this job.” Nevertheless, the habit of generous charitable giving has continued to be associated with the festive period up to the present day.
Boxing Day continued, however, to be a normal working day until 1871, when it was finally classed as a public holiday. "They would often be working until very late on Christmas Eve, so they wanted a break on Boxing Day, "Dr Armstrong said. Then it became known as a day of leisure. Organised sporting events such as football matches became popular—a tradition which has carried on until today.
Boxing Day is observed in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and some other Commonwealth nations. In America, December 26 is known as the Day after Christmas Day, and is observed as a holiday in only a few states.
