It’s difficult to know how many people are actually finding work this way. But it’s obvious from interviews with job-seekers, employers, coaches and managers that the Twitter phenomenon is fundamentally changing the way people search for jobs.
“A lot of companies aren’t advertising jobs in traditional ways,” says Jason Rivera, a graphic artist who teamed up with other San Francisco Twiners “to lead the pink-slip party (失业聚会) movement” for the networking messes. Rivera says Twitter allows companies to easily “follow” potential candidates online, while giving job hunters a backdoor peek at companies where they may be interested in applying for a job.
“It’s a great way to get up-to-the-minute information about a company and its latest products,” Rivera says, “as well as give you a shot at actually talking to a hiring manager on Twitter,as opposed to having your e-mailed resume end up as the 500th in his in-box. At the same time, Twitter gives managers faster, more efficient ways to get through the mess, and that save them money.”
Paul Mabray knows that firsthand. As a chief strategy officer for Napabased VinTank, a wine industry think tank (智囊团),he used Twitter to spot and then practically “follow’’ the 23-year-old job candidate and gifted Twitter, Ashley Bellview. “We got to learn about her personality, her work ethic and her thought process by the information she’d linked to in her tweets and by how she communicated with other people on Twitter,” Mabray says.

While the workplace is a place to wear your professional face, it's also a place where you should feel comfortable and connected to your coworkers. There's a good reason for this: A new study finds that hiding your true self at work is not good for your career and your sense of belonging in the workplace.
"When someone hides their true identity, their social connections suffer and this has an impact not just on the individual, but also on the organization they work for," says co-author Professor Manuela Barreto."Our findings suggest openness about one's identity is often beneficial for individuals, the group and their workplace."
When employers fail to create this sense of belonging among their employees, it's difficult for the individuals to find their purposes in work. This then impacts their ability to be productive. More specifically, the researchers found that hiding these characteristics from coworkers reduces their self-respect, job fulfillment and job commitment.
For the study, researchers at University of Exeter focused on commonly stigmatized(感到羞耻的) characteristics, like having a history of poverty or mental or physical illnesses. They sought to see how hiding such conditions could affect one's ability to grow.
The findings were based on multiple studies they analyzed from the Netherlands and the USA.In one.of the experiments, they had 95 men and women describe a time when they either hid or revealed(展现) a stigmatized characteristic about themselves, In another one, the researchers offered imaginary scenarios(情景) to 303 participants that again either hid or revealed themselves.
In both experiments, participants were then asked how they'd feel after hiding or sharing the stigmatized characteristic. The answers of those who hid themselves resulted in the conclusion stated above: lower sense of belonging and job fulfillment and commitment.
So we need environments where people don't need to hide. Encouraging complete openness can turn the office into a more comfortable place that allows employees to enjoy working.
1. Why is Professor Manuela Barreto mentioned?A.To clarify the process of the study. | B.To explain the findings of the study. |
C.To state the purposes of the study. | D.To show the influence of the study. |
A.They always look down upon others. |
B.They are often content with their work. |
C.They are likely to get tired of their work. |
D.They can ruin their coworkers ' confidence. |
A.To tell their stigmatized memories. | B.To participate in real scenarios. |
C.To describe others' characteristics. | D.To report their true feelings. |
A.Openness is beneficial to your job promotion. |
B.Stigmatized characteristics need hiding properly. |
C.Hiding who you are is harmful in the workplace. |
D.The sense of belonging benefits employees a lot. |

Sophie Collins, 23, is a biology graduate from London. But before starting her course at university in Edinburgh, Scotland, she took a year out and enrolled in an Art Foundation course. “Art makes me happy, even if it won't pay my bills for a couple of years.” said Collins.
The idea that you should be free to follow your dream, whether as a young person or as a middle-aged adult with a well- established career, is on the upgrade.
In schools, students are taught that they can do whatever they want and can be whoever they choose so long as they work hard enough at that dream. People in the public eye, such as Italian classical singer Andrea Bocelli, have given up positions in admirable professions to take their chance on fame. Bocelli was a lawyer before he made it as a singer, selling 70 million albums worldwide.
The media and reality TV talent shows have also played their part in encouraging young people to follow their heart.
In 2006, 18-year-old Ray Quinn, barely out of school, finished second in the British TV talent show The X Factor. He later secured a record deal with Sony.
Each year since then, hundreds of thousands of people have applied to the show, hoping, and expecting, that the chance to realize their ambitions will soon come.
Even if they don't have a particular dream in mind, many young people are encouraged to take a year or two to find where their interests lie, instead of jumping into a job which they may later tire of.
George Evans, 24, is determined to find a job which interests him. “I think most of us recognize that it is happiness and not money that is the ultimate goal,” said the Cambridge University graduate. “Unless you are passionate about your career, you won't truly succeed.”
