【推荐1】Life on the ISS

Waking up

Mission control wakes the crew up by turning on the lights at 6 a.m. The day starts the same as it would on Earth. While you wet your brush with water that will stick to its bristles (刷毛), the toothbrush and the tube of toothpaste can be left to float in the air, which is rarely seen on earth. After breakfast, the crew calls down to mission control for a planning conference to run through the day’s schedule.

Maintenance

Then it is time for household chores. Most days, the ISS requires routine maintenance and safety checks. One day it might be moving some supplies; another day could involve repairing an essential piece of equipment.

A visit to the gym

One of the main aims of the ISS is to discover how weightlessness affects the human body. Astronauts lose muscle strength in space and are more likely to break their bones once they return to Earth. To slow this process down, each crew member is required to exercise for at least two hours a day.

Mealtimes

Food comes in several forms. Dehydrated (脱水的) meals come in small bags, and spices are also available, just like on the table back home. But salt and pepper have been transformed into liquids.

Experiments

Each astronaut spends part of their day on experiments in the labs on the ISS, so that scientists back on Earth can better understand how the conditions in space affect things. Mice, ants, fish and worms have all been sent to the station to see how zero-gravity affects their bodies and behavior.

Free time

Once the crew has finished their scheduled tasks for the day, they are free to spend any remaining time they have left from their evening. Perhaps the most popular pastime is to simply watch the Earth spinning silently below the station.

1. According to the article, ISS astronauts’ daily routine is different from ours on Earth in terms of the way they _____.
A.work outB.having their meals
C.brush their teethD.do household chores
2. According to the article, astronauts are NOT allowed to _____ on the ISS.
A.do experiments on animalsB.have pepper with their food
C.decide their own work schedulesD.carry out routine maintenance alone
3. What can we learn from the article?
A.The ISS acts as a scientific research lab in outer space.
B.Mission control is of little importance to the success of a space mission.
C.In the long term, zero-gravity has no negative effect on the human body.
D.Astronauts rarely watch the Earth from the ISS for fear of getting homesick.

【推荐2】Your next Saturday night takeaway could be brought to you by a robot after a major food delivery company announced plans to use automated vehicles to transport meals. Europe’s biggest online takeaway food company Just Eat has partnered with Starship Technologies to deliver food with robots on the streets of London later this month. “Nobody has ever done deliveries with land-based robots,” said Allan Martinson, the chief operating officer of Starship.
The robot courier can travel up to 4 miles per hour for about 10 miles. It uses a GPS signal and nine cameras to navigate(确定方向). Instead of a person arriving at their door, customers could find themselves receiving a notification(通知) on their phone that says a robot is on its way and a code to unlock the automated courier. “Put the code in, the robot opens up, and there’s your food,” said David Buttress, chief manager of Just Eat.
The robot, which has so far been tested in Greenwich, Milton Keynes and Glastonbury, costs £1 to transport within 3 miles, compared with the £3 to £6 it costs for a human courier. To date 30 robots have driven nearly 5,000 miles without getting into an accident or finding themselves picked on by passers-by. They have driven in more than 40 cities around the world, including London and Tallinn, Estonia.
An initial worry was how the public would react to robots. But Martinson said the public has been calm when passing the delivery machine on the streets. “The most surprising reaction has been the lack of reaction,” said Martinson.
Another significant fear was that people would disrupt(扰乱) the robots, or try to steal them and their contents. To prevent this, the robot is fitted with nine cameras, two way audio, and movement sensors that send a warning if it is lifted off the ground. And it opens only with a pass code provided to the customer via a notification. “It’s much easier to shoplift than it is to steal a robot,” said Martinson.
1. The test of Starship robots shows that ___________.
A.they are easy to operate
B.the robot delivery is appreciated in big cities
C.the robot delivery is cheaper than human delivery
D.they can travel for 10 hours continuously
2. Which of the following is one of the worries about Starship robots?
A.People’s indifference to the robots
B.Safety of the robot delivery
C.Accuracy of the robot delivery
D.People’s concern about public traffic
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Great Improvement of Just Eat
B.Global Trend of Food Companies
C.New Robots to Move on the Road
D.Delivery Robots to Replace Takeaway Drivers

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲述了中国航空工业集团制造公司的“启明星50”太阳能无人机首飞成功。

【推荐3】The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), China’s leading aircraft maker, created the country’s first fully solar-powered drone (无人机). The large drone, Qimingxing 50, took off at 5:50 pm on September 3rd, 2022, from an airport in Yulin of Shaanxi Province and stayed in the air for 26 minutes before landing on the same runway. AVIC said that all systems of the unmanned plane functioned well on its first flight.

Powered by six electric motors with solar batteries, the drone is designed to conduct long-time operations in near space. Near space is that part of Earth’s atmosphere at altitudes of 20 to 100 kilometers. It is above the top altitudes of commercial airliners but below orbiting satellites.

Qimingxing 50, also called “quasi-satellite”, features high operational efficiency and eco-friendliness and will be tasked with high-altitude reconnaissance (侦察), forestry fire monitoring, atmospheric environmental inspection, aerial mapping, communication signal relay and other operations.

“Thanks to its capability to conduct very long endurance flights in near space, the drone can essentially become a substitute for satellites,” a Chinese aerospace expert said. Satellite services are not always available due to the limited number of satellites and relatively fixed schedules of overhead passes. In time-sensitive missions, near-space drones can offset these disadvantages, the expert said, noting that satellite services could also be damaged in wartime, so near-space drones could replace them in this occasion.

The successful first flight of the Qimingxing-50 lays a solid foundation for the development of key technologies in the country’s new energy field, the composite (复合的) material field, which will enhance China’s ability to perform tasks in near space and over far oceans. AVIC will seize the opportunity to increase investment and speed up the development of large solar-powered unmanned aircraft.

1. What do we know about AVIC?
A.It produced the world’s largest unmanned plane.
B.It started the trend of using solar batteries in aircraft.
C.It developed China’s first fully solar-powered drone.
D.It greatly improved the speed of commercial airliners.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Qimingxing 50?
A.Its design features.B.Its diverse functions.
C.Its operating procedures.D.Its environmental benefits
3. What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Detect.B.Expose.C.Analyze.D.Remove.
4. What will AVIC do in the future?
A.Increase investment in the new energy industry.
B.Accelerate the development of large solar drones.
C.Create a new composite material to manufacture aircraft.
D.Make Qimingxing-50 conduct long-time tasks over far seas.
