Perry Piccolo was a rich kid who led a very comfortable life. He thought he was the luckiest boy in the world because he could get anything from his parents. One day, Perry went to the cinema to see amovie he’d been dying to see. The problem was that he arrived a bit late, just as the last ticket was being sold to a boy. The boy had been saving for weeks to buy this ticket. Realizing there was no ticket left for him, Perry was angry, shouting and asking the boy to hand his ticket over.

“Why should I give you my ticket? I arrived before you did and I’ve paid for it,” said the boy.

“Because I’m more important than you! Look at me! I’m rich. Don’t you see?” Perry replied proudly.

At that moment, a handsome man came over to Perry and offered him a ticket, saying, “Of course, my boy. You have the right to see this movie.”

Then Perry entered the cinema happily. When he got inside, Perry looked around and was pleased to see that the place was filled with other rich children like him. However, as soon as Perry sat down, he disappeared and was somehow teleported (瞬移) onto the cinema screen. He realized that he became a movie character, playing the central role in many stories.

In all the stories Perry started out with a lot of bad luck: a couple of times his parents disappeared, other times his house burned down and he lost all his money. Sometimes he found himself in a situation where everyone treated him like a fool. In all these stories, Perry had to try to survive and get over his difficulties. He managed this, even though few people would have given him a hope.

However, all the stories had a happy ending, in which a wise, mysterious (神秘的), handsome man would help Perry realize his dreams.

When Jack was a kid, he and his family left Britain and moved to a foreign country. Although his family was poor, he became a very excellent engineer after college. He knew a lot about the train. For example, he knew that when a fast-moving train’s speed has a sudden change, it’s probably because the track is broken at some distance.

After college, Jack gained a teaching job in a British university. So one summer day he left for Britain by ship. Being poor, he wore worn-out clothes, which were even a little messy. But he didn’t care about it at all. When he landed on the British shore, he took a train to the city where the university was. On the train, he found other passengers were all rich gentlemen, who wore nice suits and shoes. And he could see all of them were not friendly to him.

After the train started, they began making fun of him. They were angry, unsatisfied with the train guard who allowed him to get on the train with them. Some even wanted to pull the alarm to stop the train.

However, all of this didn’t have an effect on Jack. He was sitting there calmly, focusing on the train’s condition, including its speed and sound produced by the wheels running on the track. Each time he took a train, he’d pay attention to the train’s sound, speed, etc. By doing so, he could feel the train and the track and check whether the train had any possible danger.

That day, when the train was already running at a high speed, the gentlemen still continued to show their unfriendly behaviors to Jack. But Jack remained calm and still focused on the train’s running. One hour later, he found there was a sudden change in the train’s speed. After further feeling the train’s condition, he could decide the track was 100% broken at some distance.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.

She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost and found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The Following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretend I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I never say anything about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly, so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework she was there to help.

There was only one problem with this perfect dog: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for.

A cobbler passed his time in singing from morning till night; it was wonderful to see, wonderful to hear him; he was more contented in shoes, than was any of the seven sages. His neighbor, on the contrary, who was rolling in wealth, sung but little and slept less. He was a banker; when by chance he fell into a doze (打瞌睡) at day-break, the cobbler awoke him with his song. The banker complained sadly that Providence (上苍) had not made sleep a saleable commodity, like foods or drinks. Having at length sent for the songster, he said to him, "How much a year do you earn, Master Gregory?"

"How much a year, sir?" said the merry cobbler laughing, "I have count my income in that way, living as I do from one day to another; somehow I manage to reach the end of the year; each day brings its meal." "Well then! How much a day do you earn, my friend?" "Sometimes more, sometimes less; but the worst of it is, and, without that our earnings would be very tolerable, a number of days occur in the year on which we are forbidden to work; and the curate, moreover, is constantly adding some new saint to the list."
