Are you happy? Most of the time, we make it hard to enjoy our lives by pursuing (追求) something that seems impossible. Happiness is possible for us all. First, we have to define (定义) what happiness is, and then reframe(重新定义) it if necessary.
For many, they have never-ending restrictions(约束,限制). I know this because I did so. I would think if only this would happen then I will finally be happy. When the great event happened, however, I didn’t take the time to enjoy the moment. I just added another restriction and continued to dream of something I would never get.
In my view, happiness is not an event nor a person. It is not a material thing, success, nor money. For me, it is gratitude (感恩). When I find the feeling of gratitude, then I find the joy. I don’t make it complicated, nor take it out of my own control. I don’t put my ability to be joyful in someone else’s hands.
Every day I look for things to be thankful for. I take a moment to enjoy the sunrise and sunset and give as many smiles and hugs as I can in one day. If I cannot be happy with what already have, then I wouldn’t be happy with more. I love finding the joy in simple things. When we remove the unnecessary limitations and expectations from our lives, then we open our hearts to receive more.
Recording my blessings in a gratitude journal helps me to see my life with new understanding. When I take time to thank God for all the blessing I have, I realize that I have everything that I need. I don’t spend much of my life complaining and crying about what I don’t have. Instead, I am grateful for what I have. The greatest gifts in life can’t be bought, or even be seen—they must be felt in our hearts.

I had a very important family document that needed to be signed by a large government department. As I stepped out of the lift on the third floor, it was a relief to find that there were only two people ahead of me in what I had anticipated would be a long queue, so I was expecting that it would be a simple and quick process.
Within a few minutes. I was in discussion with the customer service attendant as he outlined why he considered that my documentation could not be signed. I was very annoyed with his very unbearable explanation of what needed to be done, so I asked him if there was any way he could help me to have the paperwork signed on the spot and avoid a further delay. His answer was no.
Upset by what I considered to be such a negative and “by the book approach” from the customer service attendant. I asked to speak to the department supervisor (主管) in the hope that I could solve what I believed to be some very minor issues.
After a short wait, the department supervisor came to the counter to speak to me. After hearing my explanation, he responded quickly, “Believe me, I can organize to have the paperwork signed immediately and you can be on your way.” Within ten minutes, the documentation had been signed, so with a big smile, I was on my way.
At that very moment, I was reminded of a quote by W. Clement Stone. “There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.”

Consistently ranking among the top burger places by fans and publications alike, 5 Guys is growing like mad by offering delicious, affordable handmade patties (小馅饼) and a very generous part of fries.
While everything is delicious, it’s the fries that I want to talk about for a moment. Customers appreciate getting extra value for the same price. 5 Guys does such an amazing thing, such a cool little business trick, that I didn’t catch on until I really thought about it recently.
Here’s what they do: When you order some fries from the counter, the server takes their little paper fries bucket, fills it up, and then puts it in a paper bag. Then they take an even bigger scoop (勺) of fries and put it into the bag, on top of the regular order. I always think, and my kids always say, “I can’t believe how many extra fries we get!”
And then it finally dawned on me. We don’t really get any extra fries at all, do we? The genius of this little show is that for all purposes, it looks and feels like we get extra fries, but the truth is that they planned on giving that amount of fries out anyway, and budget for that. But they package it in such a clever way that you think you’re getting this great deal, this something for nothing.
People love getting a deal. We love saving money. And we like to think we’re that special customer worthy of the extra fries. Does it cost 5 Guys anything extra? No way. Does it build goodwill? You bet.

For example, one famous inventor — Benjamin Franklin — got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Eventually, his creation led to what we now call flippers!
So you don’t have to be an adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of. curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways.
Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It’s a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves.
At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.
Chelsea Lannon received a patent(专利)when she was just 8 for the “pocket diaper,” a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder.

【推荐2】It is natural to compare ourselves to others and to get caught in a mental comparison loop, and yet this seldom is beneficial. You may have heard the expression. “Comparison is the thief of joy. “To me, this rings true as I have found it is quite difficult to compare myself to others and feel joy at the same time.
Comparison not only robs us of joy, but it can also fuel self-criticism and a lack of self-acceptance. Typically, comparison leads to perceiving others as superior to you in some way and feeling inadequate or inferior. “I am not as successful, competent, attractive as they are. “Why don’t I have what they have?” We use comparison as an avenue for self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me? I must be an inadequate loser.” This hinders(阻碍)self-acceptance.
We often tell ourselves we are acceptable only if we meet certain standards, and we evaluate how we measure up by looking at others. The tendency is to conclude that we are not measuring up, particularly if we have a low sense of self-worth, and we worry that others are going to judge or criticize our perceived failures. We don’t just ask ourselves. “What’s wrong with me?” We worry what others will think: “What’s wrong with them?” The looming(迫近的)sense of possible rejection creates uneasiness and anxiety.
Comparison is deceptive(造成假象的). It tells us that if we meet the expectations, lose weight, get a promotion, or buy the house, we will feel better, calmer, more self-assured, and stop comparing ourselves. This may be temporarily true, yet, a comparison is an internal process that is ultimately based on our thoughts and sense of self, not external circumstances. We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting.
To stop comparing ourselves to others, we have to recognize that the comparison game is unwinnable and exhausting and stop playing. We should shift from being guided by comparison to being guided by personal values.
1. What is the author’s attitude towards comparison?A.Supportive. | B.Tolerant. | C.Negative. | D.Uncertain. |
A.The significance of comparison. | B.The joy of self-acceptance. |
C.The necessity of self-criticism. | D.The consequences of comparison. |
A.It is rooted in our inner thoughts. |
B.It makes us become better. |
C.We will stop it if we achieve our goals. |
D.It is a reliable measure of success. |
A.How we can change personal values. |
B.Why personal values are important to us. |
C.How personal values help stop comparison. |
D.What impact technology has on comparison. |

We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.
★Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worst offenders.
People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade(避让)them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision(碰撞).
The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.
——Michael Horan
★I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists(Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.
I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.
The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.
The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!
The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent(发荧光的)jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.
——Carol Harvey
★Cyclists jump on and off pavements(which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed alone the pavement, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.
I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.
Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?
It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hi a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim compensation.
——JML
