The day was Thankful Thursday, our “chosen day” of service. It’s a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. Thursday has become our day to go out in the world and make a positive contribution, however small it is. On this particular Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do, but we knew that something would present itself.
Driving along a busy Houston road,I prayed for guidance in our quest to fulfill our weekly Act of Kindness.Around the noon hour, my two little ones wasted no time in letting me know their hunger, chanting, “McDonald’s, McDonald’s, McDonald’s“ as we drove along. And I began searching earnestly for the nearest McDonald’s. Suddenly I realized that almost every crossroad I passed through was occupied by a beggar. And then it hit me!
If my two little ones were hungry, then all these beggars must be hungry, too. Perfect! Our Act of Kindness had presented itself. We were going to buy lunch for the beggars. After finding a McDonald’s and ordering two Happy Meals for my girls, I ordered an additional 15 lunches and we set out to deliver them. It was exciting. We would pull alongside a beggar, make a contribution, and tell him or her that we hoped things got better. Then we’d say, “Oh, by the way... here’s lunch.” And then we would head to the next crossroad.
It was the best way to give. There wasn’t enough time for us to introduce ourselves or explain what we were going to do, nor was there time for them to say anything back to us. The Act of Kindness was anonymous and empowering for each of us, and we loved what we saw in the rear view mirror: a surprised and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us as we drove off. It was wonderful!

After my son, Scott, graduated from high school, he took a job in North Carolina. Two thousand miles suddenly separated me from the person who’d been the focus of my life for 18 years. As the days went by, I missed Scott more and more.I’d always been able to take care of myself, but now I seemed to need Scott’s help constantly, like getting a tool from the top shelf, or moving something heavy. Most of all, I just missed having him to talk to.I was lonely.I knew this day would come. But why does it have to be so hard?
However, a mother spider(蜘蛛) taught me a lesson.
On my way out from my storeroom, I noticed a spider building her web across the top corner of the doorway.I reached for a hoe (锄头), tore down the web, and watched the giant spider run away in the grass. She was back the very next morning, in the exact same spot, busily rebuilding.I stared for a moment, and then reached for the hoe again. Then I twisted the hoe round and round, catching the spider in her own web.I carried her far into my backyard, shook the hoe and watched her fall to the ground and disappear in the bush. The third morning, I stopped short as I entered the storeroom. The spider was back in the same corner, her web almost completed again.I reached for the hoe, but stopped.I thought her persistence (坚持) in building her web should pay off.I stepped back and watched her long legs busily knitting the web.
For the next few weeks, the spider and I were close neighbors. One particularly boring day, I was feeling so down that I didn’t even glance up at my spider as I entered.Suddenly I found a hundred tiny creatures on the floor.I realized that these were baby spiders and the web the mother had built was to protect her young.

Bus driver Charlie was out at 3 am to drive his bus around Torresdale Avenue near Cottman in the Tacony neighborhood when he saw a tiny girl waiting at the bus stop. It was Jill, a 4-year-old little girl.
It was the early hours of a rainy morning and Charlie was out to drive his SEPTA’s 56 bus on his regular route. As usual, he picked up his passengers one by one. Of course, he had no idea that he would pick up a special passenger at this time in the morning. Just as he was about to pass a stop near the Tacony neighborhood, a woman passenger told him about a little girl she had seen, all alone waiting at the bus stop. He stopped his bus and was amazed at what he had seen. Wearing her purple raincoat, sleeping clothes, and her boots, little Jill waspatiently waiting for the bus to stop so she could ride on it.
The bus driver could not believe his eyes. His passengers at the time were also surprised to see a tiny kid all alone in the rain at that moment. Seeing a child about the age of a preschooler at 3 am without any adult with her was surely a shock. Charlie was worried about her and then he had an idea. He had to do something to take the little girl safely back home.
He and the passengers on the bus tried to find out how this had happened. As it turned out, Jill even walked 5 blocks in the rain before she reached the bus stop where she was found. Without hesitation, Charlie called the local police and told them of the little girl.
As Jill sat on the bus, the passengers comforted her and made sure she was okay. As the little girl sat with the other passengers, she shared her mission (使命) that early morning. “All I want is a box of chocolates,” she said.

Last week,as I was having breakfast in my truck,I noticed a boy sitting by the road with his dog.He was holding a sign asking for money or food to help feed him and his dog.People drove past ignoring them.
When I finished my breakfast,I decided to buy some food for them.As I was leaving,I pulled up beside him and handed him a bag of breakfast and a small bag of dog food.I asked him if he would be willing to work hard for the pay.He immediately said that he could be the hardest worker I had ever seen.
The next day he carried wood around and fetched tools for me all day without complaining once. His dog simply followed him.During the day,I learned about his sad experiences. When the boy was 15 years old,his mother became critically ill.His father, who took care of the boy’s mother, could not go out to work, and the poor boy had to drop out of school because of being unable to afford his school tuition.Being too young,he failed to find a job.He had to beg near his home to help his parents.
A month later,I paid him $2000.The look on his face was well worth it.My aimless act of kindness seemed to put spark (活力) back in his eyes.

When Jessica and her husband Edward welcomed their first child, they quickly understood that parenting would not be easy. Edward owned a textile(纺织品) business in Texas, but it was struggling. With a baby at home now, expenses went up, while income stayed the same or even went down in some months. There was constantly a lack of money.
Luckily, Edward's business grew slowly, and Jessica managed to save some money. But just when it appeared that they would be having a less stressful month, another problem knocked at their door : the washing machine broke down again.
After considering her options, Jessica realized that there was no point in getting the machine repaired. Jessica sat down to search online for a machine that she could afford. An hour of searching led her to one good find, but it cost $250, and Jessica could only afford to pay $150. In the end, she decided to see the owner James in person.
Upon arrival,a man opened the door. There was sadness in his eyes.“ How may I help you? ” he asked. “ Hi! I’m Jessica. I messaged you regarding the washing machine. Can I have a look at it? ”“Oh,sure. Come in,” James said. It seemed that the man was planning to move away.
“ Well, I hope you remember I said I wanted to talk about the price,” Jessica said embarrassedly.“I can't extend my budget beyond $150. We just had a baby, and you know things are not so well financially, so I am wondering if you could give me a discount?”
James stood there silently for a while. The woman’s sincere request made him think about his wife again, who had just passed away. He remembered she once told him that if he had the resources,he should help those who are less fortunate. Then he nodded his head in agreement.“Sure. $150 sounds like a good deal to me,” he said. Jessica’s eyes widened in surprise.“Really? You are so nice. Thank you so much!”
