Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. In the distance he     1     see a person going back and forth between the surf’s edge     2    the beach. As the man approached, he could see there were hundreds of starfish stranded(搁浅的) on the sand as the result of the natural     3    (behave) of the tide.

The man was stuck     4     the apparent uselessness of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to die. As he approached, the person continued the task of     5    up the starfish one by one and throwing them into the ocean.

As he came up to the person, he said, “You must be crazy. There are     6    (thousand) of miles of beach     7    (cover) with starfish. You can’t     8    (possible) make a difference.” The person looked at the man. He then bent down and picked up one     9    (many) starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned back to the man and said, ＂It surely made a     10    to that one!＂

I tend to go slowly when I drive in the mountains of my home because the forest scenery is     1     (fantasy) no matter what the season. This morning I was driving     2     (slow) than usual because an early March snow had turned the roads slippery.       3     (amaze) to see a buck deer (公鹿) standing in the middle of the road, I came to     4     full stop and for a few seconds stared at the deer. Most of us rush through this life not knowing the very thing     6     we are missing. The next time you find     7     (you) going too fast, slow down. Take the time to watch the sunrise over the horizon and fill the world with light. Take the time to look your children in their eyes, hug them     8     tell them that you love them. If you do, your life     9     (be) so much better and more beautiful. And you might even end up not     10     (hit) a deer on your way home.

Ever since the key message,     1     is “Never forget why you started”, was put forward last year, it has been widely accepted in China. To be frank, the same message     2     (apply) to everyone’s life.

Ambitions, meaning things you want to achieve very much, play     3     important role in our daily life. When I was a student, my father told me that his ambition since his childhood was to be a translator. He wanted to work inside big buildings as a white-collar worker. With this strong ambition in mind, he was determined     4    (work) hard at every subject,     5     (particular) English, and as a result, he     6     (admit) to the best university in his province. Afterwards, he came to Shanghai for a job. There was one thing he regretted; he didn’t get a job as a translator but became a teacher instead. This story gave birth to my ambition and it “told” me to realize this dream.

With time     7    (go) by, some people forget their ambitions. How can you keep your ambitions alive? First of all, writing down your ambition is a good way to remind you. Second, take action to stay closer to your ambition. For example, I have to memorize English words to     8     (large) my vocabulary. I also try to speak English as much as I can so that I can communicate with     9     (foreign) freely.

“Never forget why you started” is the key     10     your success. If you find your ambition, catch it quickly, protect it and keep it in your heart.

I’d like to share with you an experience, which makes me realize a small kindness can really make    1    big difference.

At the beginning of my teaching career, I had a student    2    ( name) Simon, whose grades were    3    (extreme) low. However, he was a bright student. The other day, I was working in my office    4    his mother entered the room. She kissed me on my cheeks, which surprised me beyond speech. Because    5    me, he had changed greatly. She told me how thankful she was.

I sat,    6    (wonder) what had just happened. Finally, I realized that several months before, Jeanne spoke quietly in front of the class when giving duty reports.    7    (encourage) her to raise her voice, I asked her to speak up so that Simon could hear. I said “Simon is the expert on this.” From that day on, Simon smiled more than before. The boy needing praise    8    (happen) to be the last kid in the last row. As I write this I’m I sitting on a bus back to Santiago in Chile where I am I now working     1     a language assistant. I’ve just spent a weekend in a city called La Serena, north of Santiago. I was lucky enough to see the flowering I desert, a natural phenomenon that     2     (occur) around every five years here in the Atacama Desert.

    3     (follow) a particularly large amount of I rainfall earlier, a     4     (vary) of flowers come into blossom. Bright purple flowers create     5     unbelievably beautiful scene at the base of the surrounding mountains.

A real reminder of the beauty our planet can provide.
