Here’s a list of 4 books that I think are not only helpful but important for today’s teenagers. These books contain powerful stories and practical concepts for critical thinking.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Eventually, every teen will have to come to terms with suffering and loneliness. This book shows how to approach even the most challenging trials of life. Angelou’s memoir of her childhood is heartbreaking, but the strength of her spirit and her optimism and hope help readers make sense of life. Maya shows us that it’s possible to develop something inside that can shine brightly, even in the darkest night.
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
This book highlights a very uncomfortable truth about life：if you want to create something, you will face many roadblocks. Whether it’s naysayers, self-doubt, or laziness, there are lots of things that will keep us from doing what we long to do. Pressfield helps us easily and clearly identify the enemy of creativity, and outlines a battle plan to defeat this enemy within.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This is very nearly the perfect book for teenagers and a classic American novel. The story is told with such goodness (and warmth and humor) that it’s nearly universally loved. It is so powerfully written that it can actually achieve something unbelievable in its readers: it can build empathy for the “other”. And if there’s one thing teens need in today’s world, it’s more empathy.
Essentialism by Greg McKeown
Do you ever feel busy but not productive? Essentialism shows you how to achieve the pursuit of less. The pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can channel our time, energy, and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward the goals and activities that matter.

Gary Bartz
Gary Bartz has played with generations of jazz stars. In the 1960s, after graduating from Juilliard, he joined the Max Roach/ Abbey Lincoln Group and the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. In the 1970s, he played with Miles Davis and founded the Ntu Troop, which united jazz with African folk and other kinds of music. He has published more than 40 personal albums.
Terence Blanchard
It’s almost amazing that Terence Blanchard was named the NEA Jazz Master. He is only 61. It’s relatively young for the recognition.
Born in New Orleans to an opera-loving father, Blanchard started playing the trumpet (小号) as a child. Over the years, he has won multiple Grammys and a Peabody Medal. He made history in 2021 when his opera Fire Shut Up in My Bones became the first by a Black composer to be staged by the Metropolitan Opera.

Campers at Bent of the River’s Audubon Summer Day Camp can explore nature in a fin and safe environment within the 700 acres of a nature sanctuary (保护区). Audubon Camp develops campers’ curiosity through outdoor exploration, which helps campers understand the natural world. These unique experiences and adventures can grow into a lifelong appreciation of the environmental situation.
Camp Activities:
Activities like hiking, stream-walking, river exploration, crafts, nature-themed games, live animal interactions, and birding are included.
Camp Staff:
The staff are selected based on their experience and skills in working with the youth in environmental education and their interest in local ecology and natural history. All staff must pass background checks and are required to hold current CPR and First Aid certifications to make the camp a safe place to experience nature.
Camp Age Groups:
Camp groups are sorted by grades. Naturalists are campers entering grades 1-4 in Fall 2022 and EcoDiscoverers are campers entering grades 5-8. Camp Hours & Length:
Most camps last one week from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Twilight Explorers week offered to EcoDiscoverers runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Registration opens on April, 2022. Camp spots will be reserved only after registration is completed and tuition is received.
Pricing:
Tuition is $300 per camper per week for registration made by May 1, 2022, and $325 per camper per week for registration made after May 1, 2022. Campers can get a 10% discount if they register as a group (at least 2).
