Sustainability for kids can start with a seed. We put together some ways to involve the whole family in protecting the environment.

Go on a hike.     3     Parents don’t need an acre of land to teach their children that food doesn't grow at the grocery store. All they need is sunlight, water and dirt. A windowsill is the perfect spot to grow herbs. A back deck can grow beautiful tomatoes. Plant peach seeds in a small container.     4    

Recycle together. Recycling activities for kids can be fun and support family involvement in education at the same time.     5     Then work with them to make something new out of the recycled items, such as making boxes out of recycled cardboard and storage tins out of recycled cans.

Try asking yourself a question:     4     Once you’re a little clearer about what exactly you’ve been hiding from yourself, it will get easier to shine your light on it.

       Get outside of yourself

After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it’s time to share that — not through telling others, but through being with others. Lose yourself in the beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourself.

    5     Take one at a time, determine which works best for you, and see what you can discover.

For example, a poem could use rhyming words, like seen, clean, mean and glean. Feel free to use rhymes in your poetry!    4    .

Don’t feel like your poem has to be a certain length. There is no limit as to how long a poem is. Some are a mere sentence long, while others are paragraphs long or even the length of a novel.
