For years, I posted pictures of my grandson, cute animals and delicious dishes, and video clips of people’s funy behaviour and the like on Facebook. Moreover, I played a farm game or two on this popular social media site. I thought Facebook was for fun, but I never expected a post I saw on Facebook could have a significant impact on my life.

On November 12th, 2010, I was on my way to a conference by plane. Suddenly, I suffered a heart attack. Luckily, there were three doctors on board. In less than a minute, I was given first aid. I survived, but months later, I was still trying to come to terms with what had happened. So I began to record how I survived this incident as well as my ideas about life on Facebook daily, and started to care about Facebook posts that had nothing to do with fun.

One morning on March, 2011, I looked through my Facebook feed and saw a friend’s post. She wrote, “Let go of anything unrealistic and all activities that do not mirror your brightest intentions for yourself.” The words touched me greatly. That night, I copied them onto a clean piece of paper and taped it to my laptop.

Actually, I was crazy about farm games then. I, along with many of my friends, played FarmVille. But one little farm game was not enough for me. I thought I needed more farms, more crops, and more livestock. All were in virtual form,of course. I had five different farms in five different games. And I spent hours on my farms every day. While attending to my virtual farms one day I looked out of the window and noticed the empty land in our backyard.

A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.

So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for.“This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We’re going camping in the forest!”

His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (失望的叹息),which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.

My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.

I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.

It was a cold night in December. Two beggars were sitting on a busy street corner in the downtown section of the city. They watched helplessly as lots of people walked by. Some ignored them on purpose and others were too caught up in their own cares to even notice their existence.

Every so often, a kind-hearted woman or a small child would drop a few coins in the hats which lay in front of them on the icy sidewalk. Some people, feeling particularly generous, would even pull out a bill or two from their wallets and drop them into the beggars’ hats and then continued their walking.

Just as they were getting ready to leave the street corner, they noticed a man walking toward them. He was obviously a wealthy man. They could tell that from the finely tailored business suit he was wearing.

The first beggar whispered to the second with excitement, “He’s coming our way!” The two tried not to look directly at the man as he stepped closer to them, but they couldn’t help gazing up with expectation as he reached into his pocket and took something out.

“Thunk” was the only sound they heard as what looked like a piece of hard candy, wrapped doubly in tissue paper, hit each of their waiting hats. The rich man turned and continued on his way, not making a backward glance.

“How sickening!” said the first beggar, as soon as the rich man was out of sound range. “He could have easily left us a few coins or a spare bill, but he tricks us with a piece of hard candy. ”The beggar picked up the object with the very tips of his fingers and threw it into the gutter(排水沟). He watched as it floated a few yards in the stream of muddy water and disappeared into the drain(下水道)at the end of the street. Then, he gathered up his things and walked away.

Miraculous (神奇的) Strength

One chilly, December evening, I was preparing dinner. Suddenly, while setting the table, I heard a tremendous crash from the second floor. It was the kind of rare, heart-stopping noise that instantly struck fear into a mother’s heart. Even the dishes in. the kitchen cupboard rattled (发出咔嗒声)!My seven-year-old son began screaming for help, and I raced up the stairs without even stopping to put down the dinner fork I held in my hand.

Entering my son’s room, I found my frightened toddler (学步的儿童)trapped under a five-drawer wooden dresser (衣橱). It had been torn from its wall anchor. I could hear crying as I ran toward him. As I leaned over, I saw his small, bloody face and the terror in his eyes.

I pulled the large dresser off him. At that moment, I felt I could move mountains. I was fearful to look but quickly tried to assess how badly he was hurt. Begging him to stay still, I dialed 911 and began to pray. I prayed for the mercy that spared him and the healing he would need, given that I wasn’t sure of the extent of his injuries. In those minutes before the ambulance arrived, although I was in a chaotic situation with both my sons in tears, an inner calm kept me focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me steady.

After the ambulance workers conducted a brief assessment, it was agreed that he should have a more extensive examination since this was a possible chest or head injury. A moment of pause forced me to process what had just happened. I recalled dashing up the stairs with a sense of fear as t0 what 1 would find. In only a few seconds, a lifetime of tender memories replayed in my mind. I had asked myself, “Is he still breathing?” “Are bones broken?” One moment. I was simply preparing dinner; the next. I was tearfully praying for my son’s life.
