Every few years, humpback whales come to the water area in San Luis Obispo, California, for a few days while migrating, which attracts hundreds of visitors and whale lovers. In November 2020, over 20 whales were around, feeding on silverfish. Each one is huge, about 15 metres long.
At that time, I lived nearby and I was always crazy about whales so I invited my friend Liz Cottriel to go out on a ship to check them out the next morning.
“No way,” Liz hesitated. She was scared of whales and sharks, and was worried that the ship would overturn while we were in it. But I told her there was nothing to worry about and we probably would have an unforgettable experience.
Convinced, Liz joined me and we set off at 8:30 the next morning. For the first half hour we didn’t see anything. Then I spotted two pairs of whales, swimming towards us at fast speed. Though it was the first time we had seen the large creatures at such a close distance, we intended not to turn around immediately we met them. Instead, we chose to wait for their approaching.
One of the whales breached (跃出水面), then went down and hit the water really hard, leaving what looks like a layer of oil and also large waves. The boat started rocking wildly. At that moment, we realized it was too close.
All of a sudden, a large group of fish started jumping out of the water into our ship. Their movement sounded like cracking glass around us. I was terrified. Then I felt our ship lifted out of the water – about two metres, we later learned. I figured the whale was going to drag us down somehow, and I had no idea how deep we’d be sucked underwater.

The M1 highway was closed down in both directions due to flooding, leaving thousands of vehicles stuck on the spot. Several hundred had been stuck for at least 30 hours since the road was cut at about 7.30 am on Monday.
Unluckily, I was one of the people who were waiting for help. There are almost 100 vehicles trapped on the road about 800 meters long. And one benefit was that there was a short road tunnel (隧道) that had provided shelter from the pouring rain as well as some lighting after nightfall. So how people have felt depended on how well they stored food. I was totally in trouble because of lacking food. I heard someone knocking on my window while I was worrying about my situation.
A man, who was driving a truck full of raw (生的) chicken leaving for downtown, opened his truck’s door and shared the chicken around by dinner time on Monday. This was a thriving community of shared resources and resourcefulness, where the truck driver dished out food that had been ordered for supermarkets. And others helped to cook the raw chicken by the tool which were found in their cars.
I took the chicken from the truck driver and, after expressing my thanks, I lost in thought: how do I cook this chicken? Just as I was looking around in confusion, a girl not far away waved to me, “Come over here, we have cooked meat.” “No, thanks,” I replied casually. But I was so hungry that I couldn’t help but walk over to her with the chicken. She took the chicken from my hand, cleaned it and put it on the grill (烧烤架). I was impressed by her masterful way. After a while, some meat was cooked and I took the meat she handed to me.

I jumped in the water, amid(在. . . . . 中)screams of"Oh man, it's freezing", and found it wasn't too bad. I started to warm up, and noticed the sky getting gray. "It's going to rain, "my friend Ashley said behind me. "Let's pray for no thunder or lightning, "I replied. "This meet can't be canceled. "That was when I noticed his uneasiness. "What's wrong?"I asked.
He looked over at the other team and back at me, saying, "Their 50m freestyle swimmer, Jack, is talking something bad about you. He said you'd be a good swimmer if you didn't swim like a girl. And he's not only saying something bad about you, but everyone of us. "Ashley gave me a look of encouragement and added, "Tom, you'd better swim as fast as possible and beat him. Show him who's the boss!”
My event was third. By that time, all my friends had shown up and I was preparing for my 50m freestyle sprint(冲刺)。I walked over to the blocks(起跑器)and began to prepare myself.
“You think you actually have a chance?” came an aggressive voice from my side. I turned and recognized the guy who Ashley had pointed at. It was Jack, who added, "Don't even try. "Luckily, I was not alone. My friends were close by.
“My friend is going to beat you, "Ashley warned. Jack replied, “That's a good one. We'll settle this in the water. ”
“Swimmers up!" the official called. I stepped onto the starting block and prepared for the race.
That was when all my friends started to cheer me on. I focused all my attention and followed the official's order, "Take your mark. "I bent down into my starting position, the cheering around me growing louder.

As parents, we need to help children build toward future success by developing persistence. Persistence is what drives actions such as finishing a task, pushing through frustration, putting in time and effort, or finding creative approaches to a challenging problem. The ability to keep trying early in life is linked to all sorts of favorable outcomes years later.
There are three main strategies for encouraging persistence in your child.
The first is modeling what persistence looks like. Good modeling is more effective when planned and carried out with a specific goal (such as developing honesty, or, yes, persistence) in mind. Parents who noticeably struggle with something that are slightly difficult at home, but continue to pursue the activity anyway, and repeat that pattern over time, may naturally foster persistence in a child. It helps more if they sometimes comment: “Hmm, that did not work. Let me try another way.”
When you see your child doing this themselves and devoting special effort to a task, praise them right then and there. Praise even the smallest signs of effort. Quickly, clearly doing this will increase the child’s effort, which can, in turn, extend to other activities and situations they encounter in the future. In general, if you spot the child trying hard or harder than she usually does and working through tasks, praise them for what they are doing.
And if you do not see this happening, and your child is not doing something a bit difficult, you do not need to wait. You can provide opportunities for persistence. That is, try to combine modeling and praise: Do anything that involves some time and effort together. Then, set small and eventually larger goals. Depending on how it is going, have the child do more and more of the task while you keep him or her company. However, your chosen activity should be fun or, at least, a time free of reprimands or harsh corrections.
Some people are more naturally persistent than others. Repeated practice can teach children that the process is important—sometimes just as important as the goal.
