Growing up in the Philippines, construction worker Johnny Manlugay combs the beaches each night for the eggs of sea turtles. He knows exactly what to look for,as he was trained as a child by his grandfather on how to locate the animals and their eggs. Back then, his family traded or ate them. It wasn’t about getting rich as much as it was just a part of life.
Manlugay has since turned over a new leaf. Instead,he uses his tracking skills to protect the sea turtles that visit the beaches he lives by.
“I’ve learned to love this work,”Manlugay acknowledged in an interview.“We didn’t know poaching(偷猎)was illegal and that we should not eat turtle eggs and meat.”
Manlugay delicately transferred each egg into a bucket he brought with him,as well as some sand from the turtle nests,to be handed over to Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions(CURMA),the group leading the conservation program on the beaches.
Established in 2009,the CURMA conservation effort has gradually transformed sea turtle poachers into valuable allies(盟友). They manage this by offering training to ultimately save thousands of turtles and keep their eggs from ending up everywhere but their nests.
“We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,”explained Carlos Tamayo, the director of operations.“They had no choice.”
On average, sea turtles lay 100 eggs in a nest. The number of nests in the area ranges between 35and 40 each season, which runs from October to February. Tamayo noted that the figures had doubled during the first year of the COVID pandemic.“Last season alone, for example,we had 75 nests and we released close to 9,000 hatching,”he shared.
Once collected, the eggs are then transferred to CURMA’s hatchery(孵化场)to be reburied in protected areas. Another former poacher,Jessie Cabagbag, grew up eating turtle meat and eggs like many people there.“I stopped poaching when we underwent training and were taught that what we have been doing was illegal and that these species of turtles are endangered,”he explained. Now,he admits,“I am truly proud. I am happy that I get to contribute to the conservation of the turtles.”

Bottled water has become the choice for people who are healthy and thirsty. Bottled water is all over the world. But some say the planet’s health, and people’s health maybe suffering from it.
The idea that bottled water is safer for humans may not be true. The Natural Resources Defense Council of America said, “There is no promise that because water comes out of a bottle, it is cleaner or safer than water from the tap.” Another New York City-based action group added that some bottled water is “really just tap water in a bottle-sometimes more clean, sometimes not.
It is not proven that bottled water is better than tap water. Nick Reeves from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said, “The high mineral content (含量) of some bottled water makes them not good for feeding babies and young children.” Also, most bottled water doesn’t have fluoride (氟化物), which can make teeth stronger. Kids are drinking more bottled water and less fluoridated tap water, and some say that’s behind the recent rise in bad teeth.
Storing is another problem. Placed near heat, the plastic bottles can produce bad chemicals (化学物质) into the water.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some 2.7millontons of plastic are used worldwide to bottle water each year. The plastic can take between 400 and 1, 000 years to break down.
In terms of energy use, plastic bottles are also not cheap. One report said that if water and soft drink bottles had used 10 percent recycled materials in their plastic bottles; they would have saved about 72 million gallons of gas.
So, if you are worried about the effect of bottled water on the Earth, you can take the following steps.
Drink from your tap. Unless your government warns against this, it should be fine.
Get a container (容器). Cary your tap water in steel or a lined drinking container, and clean it between uses.
Keep it cool. Don’t drink from a bottle that has been sitting in the sun. Don’t store it near chemicals, and don’t reuse plastic battles.
Choose glass containers over plastic if possible. When finished, recycle!
1. Why do some people think bottled water is bad for kids’ teeth?2. What will happen if you put the plastic bottles in the sun?
3. Please explain how to reduce worries about the bad effect of bottled water, according to the passage.
4. Do you like buying bottled water? Why or why not?

Bacteria naturally tend to group together and stick to surfaces, and this creates a sticky material called “biofilm”. Researchers at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) want to use this adhesive bacteria character and capture microplastics in polluted water to form an easily disposable and recyclable blob(团) .
Sylvia Lang Liu, microbiology researcher at PolyU and lead researcher on this project, together with his team, has engineered a bacterial biofilm, which can fix and absorb microplastics floating around in the water, and make them sink to the bottom of the water. Then the researchers can separate the microplastics from the bacteria traps and get them ready to recycle.
Microplastics are the plastic fragments, usually smaller than 5mm, which are accidentally released into the environment during production and breakdown of grocery bags or water bottles, or during everyday activities such as washing synthetic (合成的) clothes or using personal care products with scrubbing microbeads in them. Microplastics are visually tiny, making it challenging to develop effective solutions to trap, collect, and recycle them.
Microplastics are not easily biodegradable (生物降解的), so they stick around for long and absorb and accumulate poisonous chemicals. They spread into wastewater and into the oceans, endangering marine animals and eventually threatening human health, Microplastics had been found in more than 114 species living in the water and also salt, lettuce, apples, and more in 2018 according to the International Maritime Organization.
“This is an innovative application of biofilm engineering l0 address the plastio pollution crisis,” said Dr Joanna Sadler, researcher at University of Edinburgh, who was not involved in this study. “One of the biggest challenges in dealing with microplastics is capturing such small particles. Liu and co-workers have denmonstrated an elegant solution to this problem, which holds great potential to be further developed into a real-world wastewater treatment technology.”

A native sees what I do and asks “What is it?” I pour some water and tell him it’s called water. “Oh, I’m so lucky that I can see water!” the man shouts in an excited voice. “You have never seen water? But how can you live without water?” I ask.
“Harry, get up, it is 7 o'clock, or you will be late!” a voice comes to my ears. “Oh! What a strange dream I dreamed just now!”
In class, I always think of that dream. And I also think of the fresh air, clean water, blue sky, green plants and animals in our world nowadays. How beautiful our life is!
But in order to make more money, people have built more and more factories. These factories send out waste smoke and water with chemicals which are harmful to the environment. The pollution is becoming worse and worse, and as a result, some animals and plants die out. With the development of agriculture, farmers spray aerosol (喷雾) and fertilizer, which also pollute the water and air. In the street the cars and buses are sending out heavy smoke which pollutes the air badly. Even tourism is harmful to the environment. When some tourists travel somewhere, they throw the plastic bags and rubbish onto the ground.
These behaviors are polluting the environment and the environment will become the greatest problem of the world. We shouldn’t pollute the environment any more. Otherwise more and more animals and plants will disappear. And maybe my dream will come true in the future.

“Twice a day, I give them rice with beans. When I can, I buy bird food. I do it with lots of love because they are like my children,” says Montoya, who lives in a small village called Mabita, where most of the villagers protect these colorfully feathered birds and the rest of the wildlife surrounding them.
Years ago, Montoya made extra money by selling macaw eggs and babies as pets — not realizing that it would have a detrimental impact on the bird population. When she learned the number of macaws was rapidly declining, Montoya decided to become a protector of the birds. She tried to convince the other villagers to follow in her footsteps.
“They threatened me at first, but I convinced everyone to stop selling the chicks,” says Montoya. “Before 1990, the hunting and sale of wild species was legal in my country and thousands of macaws were killed. In 2010, the population dropped to 100, compared to 500 in 2005.”
Montoya’s work drew the attention of One Earth Conservation based in New York, which decided to provide funds to monitor and strengthen the macaw population with the support of the local villagers. They were paid about $10 per day to take care of the macaws and Montoya was hired to serve as the community’s project director.
“We have similar projects all over the Americas, but the Mabita project is the most successful one because of Montoya’s commitment,” says LoraKim Joyner, founder of One Earth Conservation. “Despite having her own family to feed, including six children and other young relatives, she shared her precious crops with the birds. Not everyone can do that.”
Since the project began, the scarlet macaw population has grown from 100 to 800. However, there is concern that the progress made so far will be rolled back: funding for the community involvement will end the next year.
