1】I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.

On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?

If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.

Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things.

Monty still lives in a cup, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.

I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.

1. Why did the author soak the stub in water?
A.To decorate the nice cup.B.To hope that it would grow.
C.To make a video in person.D.To remove kitchen rubbish.
2. What can we infer from paragraph two?
A.This lettuce showed no sign of recovery.
B.This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C.Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup.
D.The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves.
3. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation?
A.Hesitant.B.Fearless.C.Aimless.D.Annoyed.
4. What can we learn from Monty?
A.Never being afraid to restart yourself.B.Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C.Enjoying your own life to the fullest.D.Giving freedom to the heart in a way.

2】Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was “to make you hear, to make you feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything”. A good short story tries to give the reader a sense of the actual experience. Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind. After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies (嘲笑), or the unpredictability of human behavior.

In order to read a short story with full understanding, the reader must approach the content on two levels. The first and most obvious level is conveyed through the plot. Plot refers to the sequence of events, to the actions of the characters and the situations in which they are involved. To explain the plot, then, is to tell what happened in the story and to whom. In some short stories, plot is the dominating element. In other short stories, plot plays a very minor role.

In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level. The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.

To understand and appreciate the story, the reader must be able to identify its general topic or theme. The next step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. Finally, the reader should be able to explain the insights which the author has given into the theme.

Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it has been said. They must look for style and structure. Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone. Structure refers to the architecture of the story, the way in which the details are selected and arranged to produce the desired effect.

1. Which is mentioned about a good short story after it is finished reading in the first paragraph?
A.The wise fun life carries.B.Laughters.
C.Unexpected attack.D.Actual experience of life.
2. The author takes The Old Man and the Sea to explain that ________.
A.plot is the most important role in understanding a short story fully
B.readers can understand a story well themselves by reading
C.we can’t approach the content of a short story on either of the two levels
D.we can approach the book content on another level other than plot level
3. Which of the following helps us fully appreciate a short story?
A.The style and structure of a story.
B.The reader’s own personality.
C.The arrangement of words and sentences.
D.The comments the author says about the book.
4. Joseph Conrad would most probably agree that ________.
A.a good story writer inspires with various techniques
B.a good story may as well be attached with an audiovisual version
C.a good story doesn’t relate to feelings of the readers
D.a good story writer employs pictures or images

【推荐3】“I really want to, but I can't because...”

It hurts every time I hear someone say it. I see it for what it is an excuse. Every one of us has hopes, dreams and goals. We talk about how we will achieve them, but when it's time to do them, we use that sentence.

During my teen years, I felt stuck. I wanted to learn so many things and achieve my wildest dreams, yet I couldn't. Living in an underdeveloped country, we suffer from a lack of water, electricity, security (安全) and opportunities. And, we don't have training courses, libraries or clubs, and the internet is slower than a snail crawling (爬行) through peanut butter.

One day, I had had enough. I decided to use the resources (资源) I had to create the future I dreamed of. I set my mind on getting the Japanese Monbusho Scholarship (奖学金). I found articles and books online to become fluent in Japanese. In a few months, I was able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese. I realized that I would need money. I set out to build a hedgehog (刺猬) care website. Every day, after school,I would research hedgehogs and write detailed articles about them. I studied Japanese and wrote about hedgehogs for three years. I'm sure you're expecting a spirit-lifting ending where I travel to Japan and live off my website. That's not how this story ends. The fact is, I didn’t even get the chance to apply for the scholarship. I failed. Unwilling to accept the facts, I started an online university the next year. And the hedgehog website made me a total of $60.

I can tell you that I tried, but it didn’t work out. It did just not the way I expected.

I'm not in Japan, but I know how to speak Japanese and have met many interesting people along the way. My hedgehog website didn’t succeed, but I created a new one that's even better with the experience I gained.

I didn't let my difficulties stand in my way, and I created my own opportunities. Anyone can embrace (欣然接受) the cards they've been dealt (发牌) and create their own way to make them into a winning hand.
