Hurricane season can be wild and unpredictable.
Sandbags are very useful. While sandbags won’t be able to help in the extreme storm, many people will be able to prevent flooding and extensive damage to their belongings by placing sandbags.
It’s important to prepare the inside of your home for strong winds and rain. But you should also keep an eye on the outside of your house, too. Trim (修剪) trees, especially dead branches, to prevent anything else that could fly through a window and cause damage during a hurricane.
You should also take pictures of expensive items like electronics and keep notes of their serial numbers.

● Try to give your habits a fresh start from time to time.
For instance, stand on another foot when getting out of bed. You can also switch to holding a tooth brush with a hand you’ve never used for this purpose before.
● Learn how to get proper rest in order to work efficiently.
Deep healthy sleep increases brain power and contributes to attention focusing. A lack of sleep or its derangement (紊乱) may affect mental activities and remarkably decrease its functional level.
● Do outdoor exercise.
It is scientifically proven that a reasonable outdoor exercise forces your brain to produce new cells. There’s no need to become an athlete, but a bit of jogging around the building will definitely do you no harm.

Alone time is just as important as socializing time. It is important to stay alone for you to understand your thoughts and feelings at a deeper level.
Do you have goals? If you don't, now is the time to write them down. A person without goals has no direction. And he or she can never know if he or she is making progress or not. Create your life goals and then break them down to yearly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and daily goals. You can even go deeper to hourly goals.

Expressive writing is a specific strategy different from keeping a journal. The idea is to reflect honestly and thoughtfully on a particular suffering or challenge. Hundreds of studies have found that it can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as depression, cancer, and PTSD.
Talking about an event can lead to reflection, where you are lost in emotions and may become overexcited. But writing forces you to slow down. Writing can reduce the neural activity in the brain, leading to a positive mood and an enhanced appreciation for life.
What if you think you’re not expert at writing?
But there are a few warnings.
A.It can relieve pain and improve mood. |
B.Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. |
C.Expressive writing isn’t a magical cure for all. |
D.Expressive writing is a recording of what happens. |
E.Spend just a few minutes taking down your feelings. |
F.Realizing what is disturbing you is an important first step. |
G.Writing increases one’s acceptance of experiences, and acceptance is calming. |

The insect invasion in Africa was caused by the weather. But experts say the one in Pakistan is a side effect of a civil war in the Middle Eastern country of Yemen. Because of that war, officials haven't been able to do enough pest control to keep Yemen's locust population from growing, so the insects obviously increased and made their way north east eventually landing on Pakistan.
Locusts don't directly attack people. They threaten us by eating our crops. And so many of these insects in such large numbers can destroy regional food supplies. That's why Pakistan declared a state of emergency early this month , saying it was dealing with the highest number of locusts in more than 20 years. So what can be done about it? Some experts say pesticides are needed to kill masses of these insects, but there's another idea being considered in China. It may send ducks to Pakistan — as many as 100,000 of them — to fight the locusts by eating them. An expert interviewed by the Bloomberg media company says one duck can eat more than 200 locusts per day, and China has reportedly used ducks to successfully solve a locust problem in the past.
But not everyone is on board with this. A member of China's delegation to Pakistan says there's not enough water in Pakistan's hot dry climate to keep the ducks going. Whatever methods are used to control locusts in Asia, the situation in Africa is getting more hopeless by the day.

However, sometimes people using controlled burns to clear land for farming can accidentally start a wildfire. Between 2003 and 2022, 85 percent of wildland fires in the U. S. were caused by human behavior. This includes leaving campfires burning, burning rubbish, throwing lit cigarettes and starting a fire on purpose.
Wildfires can clear dead and dying plants to help new growth. However, wildfires create large amounts of smoke which is dangerous to breathe. Wildfire smoke contains hundreds of chemical compounds. Smoke from burning houses and buildings contains even more toxic chemicals. An increasing amount of scientific research points to possible long-term health damage from breathing in very small particles (微粒) of smoke. There are short-term issues as well. At-risk people can be hospitalized and sometimes die from smoke.
Officials in the U. S. have been moving quickly to better protect people from the harmful effects of wildfire smoke. However, they find it more difficult to communicate these dangers to people who live thousands of kilometers from the fires. Jeff Pierce is an atmospheric scientist. He said smoke loses its odor (气味), but remains harmful even when it travels long distances. A recent study found that people who live close to fires are more likely to be prepared.
If advised, avoid outdoor activities to reduce your exposure to smoke. Keep doors and windows closed. Run an air filter to clean the inside air. Face coverings, or masks, can protect against breathing in smoke. As with COVID-19, the most effective are N95 masks.
NASA satellite images show that wildfires are now burning on every continent. Large wildfires in Australia and the U. S. often attract the world’s attention. Dan Jaffe is a wildfire smoke expert at the University of Washington. He said, “These fires are going to be burning all summer. In terms of bad air quality, everywhere in the country will be worse than average this year.”

A.Wind makes wildfire smoke travel very far. |
B.The danger of wildfire smoke mainly comes from its odor. |
C.People living far from the wildfire will suffer little harm. |

A.To offer readers ways of escaping fires. |
B.To warn people against the danger of wildfires. |
C.To draw readers’ attention to poor air quality. |
D.To persuade people to avoid outdoor activities. |

Large parts of the country that don’t have wildfires are now at risk. They include nearly 80 million homes and buildings. That’s what new data shows. Over the next 30 years, the risk will only grow. The group First Street Foundation created a program called Fire Factor. People can go to a website to learn what their wildfire risk is in 2022 and in 2052. Right now, about 16% of Americans live in risky places. By 2052, that will go up to 21%.
California will likely suffer a lot from wildfire. That’s partly because it is so big and partly because of its weather. So California will be on the top of the at-risk list. But nearly half of all at-risk Americans in 2052 will live in the southern half of the U.S. The South will be home to the largest number of people at high risk: 32 million. States like Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and North and South Carolina will be “in the line of fire,” so to speak, and so will southwestern states like Arizona and New Mexico.
People are doing many things to make fire risk worse. They are moving to places where wildfire is a natural yearly event. They are building homes right next to plants and trees that can burn. Climate change has increased heat and dryness. That means any spark (火花) at any time can cause a big fire.
As with many climate threats, wildfires put minorities (少数群体) at the greatest risk. By 2052, about 44% of all Native Americans will live in places at major risk from wildfire. Nearly 1 in 4 Hispanics will. People who don’t speak English or own cars will have a harder time learning about and getting away from a fast-moving fire.
