Face It
Debbie Harry
HARPER COLLINS
Picture this: it’s the late 1970s and the punk music scene is starting to take hold. Blondie releases the album Parallel Lines, which soars straight into the charts. Every teenage girl wants to be lead singer Debbie Harry, while every teenage boy wants to be her boyfriend. Now 75, Harry bares all in her memoir Face It, from her childhood to the hedonistic (享乐的) years of Blondie an then solo artist. Part entertaining, part shocking, this biography is as humorous, moving and as dynamic as its subject.

NEWSOUTH BOOKS
The brain really dislikes being in a condition of uncertainty, says award-winning neuroscientist Henning Beck. If what we remember is fragmented, the brain will substitute in the rest of the information without you even noticing, he says in the chapter “Memory”. In this “user’s guide for your brain”, Beck argues that mistakes and faults are the keys to success. He combines science with brain-boosting advice and real-life stories to take the reader on a fascinating adventure through human memory.

By Bill Gates
A great read is the perfect gift and I think everyone could use a few more books in their lives. My book list covers various topics, including an autobiography on learning throughout a life, a deep search on autonomous weapons (武器), a thriller about the fall of a once-promising company and a guide about meditation (冥想)—there’s something for everyone.
The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness, by Andy Puddicombe. The book starts with Puddicombe’s personal journey from a university student to a Buddhist monk and then becomes an entertaining explainer on how to meditate. If you’re thinking about trying mindfulness, this is the perfect introduction.
Army of None, by Paul Scharre. It’s an extremely complicated topic, but Scharre offers clear explanations and presents both the advantages and disadvantages of machine-driven warfare. His fluency with the subject should come as no surprise: he’s an ex-soldier who helped draw up the U.S. government’s policy on autonomous weapons.
Bad Blood, by John Carreyrou.Carreyrou gives you the definitive insider’s look at the rise and fall of a company. I found myself unable to put it down once I started. This book has everything: magazine cover stories, ruined family relationships, and the failure of a company once valued at nearly $10 billion.
21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Noah Harari. I’m a big fan of everything Harari has written, and his latest is no exception. If 2018 has left you stressed out by the state of the world, 21 Lessons offers a helpful framework for processing the news and thinking about the challenges we face.
Educated, by Tara Westover. Tara never went to school or visited a doctor until she left home at 17. I loved this life story of a young woman whose thirst for learning was so strong that she ended up getting a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
1. According to Bill Gates, the book list is _____.A.time-consuming | B.life-changing |
C.wide-ranging | D.easy-reading |
A.he used to serve in the army |
B.he has outstanding writing skills |

You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have reached. Check the average number of words per page for the particular book you are reading. How do you know when 5 minutes has passed on your watch if you are busy reading the book?Well, this is difficult at first. A friend can help by timing you over a set period, or you can read within hearing distance of a public clock which strikes the quarter hours. Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the same kind of easy, general interest books. You should soon notice your accustomed w. p. m, rate creeping up.
Obviously there is little point in increasing your w p. m rate if you do not understand what you are reading. When you are consciously trying to increase your reading speed, stop after every chapter( if you are reading a novel) or every section or group of ten or twelve pages( if it is a text-book) and ask yourself a few questions about what you have been reading. If you find you have lost the thread of the story or you cannot remember clearly the details of what was said, reread the section or chapter.
You can also try “lightning speed” exercise from time to time. Take four or five pages of the general interest book you happen to be reading and read them as fast as you possibly can. Do not bother about whether you understand or not. Now go back and read them at what you feel to be your “normal” w p. m. rate, the rate at which you can comfortably understand. After a “lightning speed” reading through(probably 600 w. p. m) you will usually find that your “normal” speed has increased-perhaps. by as much as 50-100 w. p.m. This is the technique sportsmen use when they usually run further in training than they will have to on the day of the big race.
1. In speed reading, looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes________.A.avoids the need for reading faster | B.is not the same as pacing |
C.may seem unworkable at first | D.helps you to remember your page number |
A.every chapter | B.every section |
C.every four or five pages | D.every ten or twelve pages |
A.To increase your speed by scanning the text first. |
B.To test your maximum reading speed. |
C.To help you understand more of the content of the book. |
D.To enable you to win reading races against your friends. |

These stories can encourage future leaders and thinkers, so every child can feel they can achieve their dreams, from the Little Leaders series to Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls. It’s inspiring to see everyone following their own path despite the barriers they come across.

●Each first-aid skill focuses on one key action.
●The teaching resources provide you with all the guidance you need.
●The resources have easy-to-follow lesson plans that save you time in preparing for your classes.
This new interactive (互动的) learning website will include:
●a multimedia library with supporting materials you need for each lesson
●different learning activities for those aged 5-18
●a full curriculum mapping for the new requirements in England
