A rock is as big as a house. That’s how the guide book described Giant Rock. Dad said it was carried here by a glacier millions of years ago.
I was finally going to see it, on snowshoes, with my three older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I’d been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow alongside wild-animal tracks. At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map in the information kiosk (亭子). “We start here”, Dad said, “on the red path. Then we turn left onto the purple circle. That’s where Giant Rock is.” “Remember to stick together, guys,” Uncle Don said.
The path ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple path, which wound back and forth, travelling through the hills and gullies. We settled into a rhythm, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunch-crunch-crunching through the snow. My cousins were faster than I was, but I managed to keep up.
Finally, we reached a hill and saw the massive rock sitting alone in the forest. “It really is as big as a house” my cousin Josh said, gazing up. My cousins and I high-fived (举手击掌) each other and jogged down the slope until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the rock’s giant shadow, I noticed the sun had dipped even lower. “Let’s head back,” Dad said after a few minutes.
Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animal tracks I didn’t recognize. I followed them off the path for a closer look. There were no claw marks, which meant they didn’t belong to a dog or a fox. Instead, they looked like tiny handprints and footprints. Must be a raccoon (小浣熊), I thought.

Today is his birthday. It's a special day that Brian feels that he is lucky to share with you, for today he is 70 years old.
About a month ago Brian asked Danielle and Nancy if he could do what he wanted to do on his birthday. He didn't know then what he would say, but he did know that he wanted to share his age in a very public way. Revealing age is not something that most people, including himself, feel comfortable doing. People wouldn't think of asking their friends, associates or customers how old they are. Why is it then perfectly acceptable to ask a child how old he is? What changes between age 7 and age 70? When and why does age turn from something to be proudly claimed to a topic to be avoided?
He believes it happens when a child no longer states his age as a simple fact, just as his youngest son Gavin used to do with mathematical precision: “I am 6 and 5/12 years old.” Then he instead begins to focus on being seen as older. As parents, people contribute to this mind shift by remarks such as “Act your age” or “You're older than that.” He admits that he said such things to his own children. The child gets the message that age brings status, power and autonomy. People celebrate important events. Then sometime after age 21 birthday celebrations lose their allure. No longer is getting older seen as a badge of distinction. Instead, people become concerned that they are getting old. The very word “old” has negative connotations. What image comes to mind when you hear “old age” “old folk's home” “old guard” or “out with the old, in with the new”? “You're too old” will gradually turn into “I'm too old.” He has heard this inner voice many times.

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples (波纹) in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the medals ceremony.

She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in this summer. The train was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken,with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching year-round.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find out a host family for me.

Bill McDonnell, who was a soldier when young, was a 92-year-old now, still healthy and strong. He loved hunting very much. On December 15, Bill decided to go hunting in Shenandoah Mountain the next day as the deer season had begun. His wife Joanna McDonnell intended to let their son Bill McDonnell Jr. accompany him, but Bill Jr. had a football game that day. Bill McDonnell said he could manage all by himself. Joanna then required Bill to be out of the woods by 2 pm and home by 3 pm, plenty of time before sunset. She added, “ Do take some necessities like a flashlight, just in case.”

By around 2 pm, Bill stopped at somewhere in the valley, exhausted. “I’ll get it figured out,” he said to himself. He took out his phone to call his wife, but the phone had died.
