Half a year ago after getting her visa, Xie Lei left her family and friends in China and boarded a plane for London. It was the first time that she     1    (leave) her motherland because she wanted to study global business and improve her English. She would have to get used to living in a     2    (complete) new environment in which she had to learn almost everything such as asking     3    (passer-by) for directions. On arriving in London, she chose to live with a host family, in     4    they always help her with her adaptation to the new life. It’s     5    great comfort for her.     6    challenge is to get used to the academic requirements of a Western university. For her first essay, the tutor said that she couldn’t cite what other people had said without     7    (acknowledge) them and encouraged her to express her own ideas.

Now Xie Lei feels much more at home in the UK.In other words, she adapts     8    the new environment well. What seemed strange before now     9    (appear) quite normal to her.     10    (involve) in social activities, she is acting as a cultural messenger building a bridge between two cultures.

Before leaving for my study tour,I was excited and fearful at the same time. I could not wait to start all of the adventures that I knew Australia could offer, but I was    1    (terrible) afraid of being alone and missing out on the events    2    would go on at home while I was gone.

Looking back now I feel silly for allowing these    3    (worry) to cloud my mind. While missing things     4    home with loved ones did make me feel sad from time to time, I continuously reminded    5     that no one back at home was experiencing the new and amazing things that I was in a foreign country.

One of the most     6    (impress) parts of studying abroad was the chance    7    (make) new friends from all over the world.I now have some of the best friends of my life from places like Canada, Australia,Denmark,Italy    8    even Sri Lanka.Spending time with people from all over the world    9    (open) my eyes to the way things are done in other countries. Before studying abroad, I only really knew what it was like to live in the United States But now I have     10    greater knowledge of the cultures of different countries throughout the world than before.

I like taking photos very much. Once I travelled by ship     1     a cloudy morning. It was in the afternoon that the weather turned fine. Therefore, I wanted to take some photos. I was looking around and I saw next to me a lovely little girl     2     (sit) on her fathers shoulders.     3    was lucky for me to meet such a perfect moment-the girl was smiling and the surrounding view was beautiful. Without    4     (think), I took a picture of the little girl at that moment.

Her mother was surprised that a    5     (strange) was photographing her daughter. I explained that I was moved by that sight and    6     (show) them    7    photo on my digital (数字的) camera. They loved it very much. I said I could email it to them when I got home. Finally, they gave me their email address. The next day, I sent    8     (they) their daughter’s photo as I    9    (promise).

This morning I received a message     10    (say) they are grateful and that they are very happy with the lovely photo of their daughter and a lovely memory of the day.

The phrase “One Person Can Make a Difference” is one of those sayings that great importance     1     (attach) to when we teach youngsters—to encourage them to do something     2     (significance), to help another person, or to dream big about     3     they will change the world.

    4     adults, do we really believe this? I am writing to tell you that indeed “one person can”, because I know one person did an act of kindness     5     changed my life and the lives of millions more.

Almost 15 years ago while     6     (drive) across town, I was listening to a radio interview and heard an inspiring story of     7     (generous). A woman had carried in ten winter coats through the Thanksgiving weekend crowds on mass transportation     8     (donate) them at the One Warm Coat drive. She knew the city had many people in need.

She was only one person, yet it was her action that made me realize that more people would be able to donate if there were more drop-off locations. In the past 15 years, One Warm Coat     9     (inspire) the donation of over 4 million coats across the country. As the National Founder, I feel warm, knowing that we each are capable of making     10     real difference in the lives of thousands each Fall and Winter.

So when you wonder “will it really matter?” I can tell you that it will!

For the past 13 years, Martin Burrows has been working as a long-distance truck driver. Spending up to five nights a week on the road can be a lonely business,     1     (leave) him with plenty of time to notice his surroundings. “I kept seeing more rubbish everywhere and it was getting on my nerves. I decided I had to do something about it,” he says. One day, he stopped his vehicle,     2     (take) out a trash bag and started picking up the garbage. The satisfaction after clearing a small area was     3     (extreme) remarkable.

Before his time on the road, Burrows spent over two decades in the military     4     a vehicle driver. His service saw him stationed throughout Europe and also on tours in Afghanistan. After returning to civilian life, he was diagnosed with PTSD and had to experience situations     5     his mental health suffered a lot in 2017. His     6     (contribute) in fund-raising for Help for Heroes led him     7     (meet) a man who used model-building as a distraction from PTSD. Burrows realized that his act of roadside cleanup had a similar calming effect on his mental well-being.

By 2019, Burrows     8     (begin) using his free time on the road to regularly clean up garbage. Some     9     (passer-by) encouraged him to set up a Facebook group, which he called Truckers Cleaning Up Britain. Since truckers are so often on the move, the Facebook page acts as     10     means of raising awareness rather than a platform for organizing cleanups. Burrows expressed his intention to continue the cleanup efforts as long as his physical condition allowed, as he still found joy in the process.

Enlightenment(启示)can show up in some pretty strange ways. The Buddha found it under a Boddhi tree and Nelson Mandela in prison. It doesn’t matter where and how it happens. What matters is that it does happen. Little did I know,     1    (I) would arrive in the form of a hard-shelled animal trying to cross the road—a turtle. But this wasn’t just any turtle; this was the world’s most optimistic one. He determined to cross twenty feet of tar(柏油)road as cars drove past quickly.

I thought    2    crazy to cross the road that way, the little one couldn’t    3    (realize) the danger, though. But today was his lucky day. My wife’s quick driving reflexes(反应)not only ensured that “turtle soup” would not be for dinner that night,     4     her act of kindness would eventually become the foundation for everything I teach today. As unusual as this sounds, the simple act of pulling over our car, removing this little turtle from harm’s way, and placing him back into the wild, caused something extraordinary    5    (happen) inside of me.

As I stood there holding this tiny creature in my hands, a wave of pure delight came over me. It was that warm, teary-eyed feeling    6    was felt during life’s greatest moments, like falling in love or the birth of a child. I honestly felt as if my heart was completely opening up as everything stood still around me.

In no way would I have described it as “enlightenment”, but there was no doubt about it—helping this little turtle just felt so good!

But why? After all, it’s just a turtle, right? And then it hit me. I finally realized what was happening. If it    7     (not be) for the turtle, I wouldn’t have got the feeling. At that point, a flood of    8    (inspire) thoughts ran through me. I walked back to the car, opened my journal and wrote eight words that would later prove to be life changing for me: “kindness creates happiness and live a life of kindness”.

It was the answer I    9    (look) for for so long. The secret    10    inner peace and lasting happiness was kindness.
