Ngoc Anh knows the value of trees. Years ago, he worked as a logger. He cut trees down illegally and sold them for money.

But very heavy rainfall and floods increasingly damaged his community in the central province of Quang Binh. The 36-year-old Ngoc started learning about the climate and natural crises. He changed his job and became involved in tourism and environmental conservation.

Now, Ngoc Anh is one of 250 former loggers to receive training from a tourism company. He works as a travel guide. He usually leads foreign tourists through forests and into some of the world’s largest caves in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

“Whenever I saw a large tree, my head used to calculate how tall the tree was and how to cut it into logs of different sizes,” Ngoc Anh said. “But now when I see such a tree, I will tell the tour group how valuable it is because there aren’t many left.”

Global Forest Watch estimated that the country had lost about 3 million hectares of forest from 2001 to 2020. That was a 20 percent diminution in 20 years. The losses were mostly driven by logging.

In 2007, the government started taking more measures to prevent illegal logging, which has helped slow the rate of deforestation.

Together with a park official, Ngoc Anh and other tour guides help guard the trails to keep poachers (偷猎者) away. They remove animal traps and clean up any waste.

Nowadays, Ngoc works for less than half the money he earned before as a logger. But he hopes to earn more as the tourism recovers.

1】These days more and more people tend to buy man-made trees for Christmas, because they think they are good for the environment. But is it true? Which is more environmentally friendly—real or man-made? The simple answer is: it depends.

Real trees that still have their roots have little carbon footprint (碳足迹). They can be planted, brought inside for the Christmas period and then replanted.

But things are more complex for other trees.

Britain’s Carbon Trust estimate (估计) that a two-meter tall tree that doesn’t have roots has a carbon footprint of between 3.5 kg CO2e and16 kg CO2e depending on whether it is burnt—which is less polluting——or finds its way to a landfill (垃圾填埋场). “Unfortunately, we still see a lot of trees going into landfill,” says Sophie Neuberg, a member of Friends of the Earth. “And that’s very bad for the environment because they break down very slowly and create methane which is a greenhouse gas.”

The picture for plastic trees isn’t so encouraging. The Carbon Trust estimate a carbon footprint of around 40 kg CO2e for a two-meter tree, but its beauty is that it can be reused.

“It’s a good idea to get a good quality one that you can use for many years. Someone I know has had their plastic tree for 20 years,” Neuberg says.

This tendency toward reuse of plastic treess is supported by research published by the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA) who estimate that 85% of US families with a man-made tree will reuse it and that on average man-made trees are reused for 11 years.

Jami Warner, director of ACTA repeats Neuberg’s advice. “Quality man-made trees are very easy to break down and very easy to store,” Wrner says. “If you take good care of it you can use it season after season or you can donate it to a good organisation.”

However, if you want a truly green Christnnas, you can simply replace the tree with the plants already in your house and decorate them for Christmas.

1. Why do people tend to buy man-made Christmas trees now?
A.They think it costs less.
B.They find it more convenient.

D.They believe it is more eco-friendly.
2. What is the worst way to deal with a used real tree?
A.Burning it.B.Reusing it.
C.Throwing it.D.Replanting it.
3. Which of the following may Jami Warner agree with?
A.Buying a good quality plastic tree.
B.Planting a tree in a pot and reusing it.
C.Using plants to replace Christmas trees.
D.Ignoring the tradition and canceling the tree.
4. In which section of a website can you find the text?

【推荐2】Imagine possessing something that you loved so much. Imagine what it would feel like if you lost it. While that item may be something as simple as a doll, you would still feel very upset, but you could replace it with a new one. Now imagine losing something that you depend on for survival and cannot be replaced. That is what it would be like if we lost the natural environment around us.

Firstly, I believe the environment should be preserved because it supports human life. One of the largest examples is that we get all of our food and drinks in the environment. If the environment were to be destroyed beyond revival, then the human race would be over in months. Scientists have yet to find another planet with similar conditions to the Earth, and if it’s found, we don’t have the technology to get to that planet on time.

Secondly, I believe that the environment serves as an amazing educational tool for students. When I was in second grade, I had an absolute interest in animals. When we had a field trip to the Daggerwing Nature Center, I was very excited. When we got there, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. There was a bridge to get to the main building, and under the bridge was a small swamp(沼泽) with turtles, fish, and my personal favorite, alligators. I was so surprised that I almost ran into the tour guide. We walked into the building and saw various animals in their habitats. I was so inspired by this visit. Six years later, I have taken an animal behavior class for three weeks. Meeting by chance with the environment can inspire people, and if preserved it will continue to inspire people.

In conclusion, the environment is so valuable because it can’t be replaced, keeps us alive, and serves as a great educational tool.

C.Recovery.D.Revision.
3. Why did the author take a class on animal behavior?
A.Because he thought it a promising subject.
B.Because he wanted to be an animal expert.
C.Because his teacher encouraged him to do so.
D.Because he was inspired by animals he once saw.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Which Planet Can Replace the Earth

【推荐3】    1     “Green” is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment—the water, the land, and the air we breathe. Why green? Plants are green, and without them the earth wouldn't be such a lovely home for us human beings.

Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. That means we are always throwing away old things and buying new ones.     2     For example, if your brother is old enough not to play with his plastic bike, why not give it to another family who has a little kid so that they don't need to buy one? And one less large plastic toy doesn't need to be produced.

3     Many organizations will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require(要求) it. Make sure you encourage everyone in your house to think whether things can be reused or recycled before they're thrown away.

Almost everyone likes traveling. But next time before you travel around the world, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a place where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? If so, get there and get your hands dirty. Then you can watch with pride as your tree takes root, and your garden plants grow into big plants full of ripe, red tomatoes or tiny-juicy blueberries.     4    .

A.Who knew being green would taste so good?
B.Recycling (收利用) has never been easier.
C.Many times, if you no longer need something, someone else just might need it.
D.You'd better not eat when you are traveling.
E.What does it mean to be green?
