Growing up, I was always around my grandma Meredith. She was the one who originally inspired my love for cooking and my dream of becoming a chef. Yet, one day I received a text that would turn my whole life around: “Grandma is seriously ill”, the text read. “We need your help in assisting with her care.”

Without a second of hesitation, I agreed to travel back home. Thankfully, my boss at the restaurant let me take unpaid leave for the next several months so I could come home to help out with grandma. After driving across several states, I finally got back to our family home in West Virginia. Yet, what I saw was really hard for me to bear. The Meredith I saw then was not the lively, joyful Meredith I had seen while I was growing up.

“Tony!” she called to me from her bed, “It’s so good to see you!”

“Grandma,” I sighed, “I’m not Tony. That’s dad, your son. I’m Hank.”

This was the start of a months-long journey of helping out around the house—cooking, cleaning, and, most of all, keeping grandma in good health and good spirits.

Every day, I cooked delicious food to keep everyone’s spirits high. But, secretly, I hoped that cooking some dishes that we had made together in my. Childhood would somehow help get grandma’s memory of me back, if just for a moment.

Stews (炖菜), chops (排骨), roasts— I served all of these to grandma and my parents around the clock. When I wasn’t taking grandma out for a walk in her wheel chair or changing her bed sheets, I was cooking. I had cooked for celebrities while at the restaurant in New York City, but never had I poured my heart out into my meals than I did then for grandma. However, it didn’t work at all.

Gains and Losses

Most of us have experienced unforgettable moments in our lives. The moment that I will never forget happened in my family.

For the first fifteen years of my life, I was the only child in my family. I didn’t have any siblings. Fortunately, I’ve always had my parents who love and care about me a lot. They help solve any problem and they will do anything for me. What I’d never really thought about is that someday one of them could no longer be there for me.

One day found out that my mother was pregnant, which was big news in my family. Everyone was excited and happy, especially me. I imagined that I would have a baby brother, and I thought about playing and having fun with him. He would have a cute face and look at me with his naive eyes, begging me to play with him. I was expecting that day to come soon. I kept asking my mother questions about what my brother was going to look like, what he would eat and when he was going to be born.

Finally one morning, my mother went into labor and she and my father went to the hospital while I went to school. Of course, I thought everything would be fine. After all women have babies every day. Thus, I was hoping to see my baby brother as soon as I got to the hospital.

After school, when I went to the hospital, my brother had already been born. But my mother was still inside the operating room, while my father waited anxiously outside. After waiting for a long time, the doctor came out and told us that after my mother had given birth to my brother, they had trouble stopping the bleeding. He told us not to worry; my mother would be fine. Then, he went back into the operating room. Seconds later, lots of doctors and nurses rushed inside. My father and I were growing more anxious by the minute. Waiting was very painful for us, because we had finally realized that anything could happen and all we could do was wait.

When I was a kid, I was always eager to know what was inside the colorful boxes under the Christmas tree. But when that curiosity was satisfied beforehand, fun would be absent.

One Christmas Eve, my sister Tina and I decided to peek at our presents before our mom got home. Since Tina was older, and that put her in charge, she opened the first present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room. I was to report any suspicious activity or person, namely our mother.

I was so excited that I could barely stand still. I couldn’t keep my eyes on the window very long, either. My head moved from the window to Tina and back to the window again. I felt like I was watching a Ping-Pong match.

“All right!” Tina shouted. She pulled out an empty jewelry box. “You know what that means, don’t you?”

I jumped up and down. “Yeah, it’s my turn!”

“No.” she said. “It means that there must be some jewelry under here.” I watched my sister search through the presents under the tree trying to find one she thought was small enough to be a necklace or earrings

“Hey, that’s not fair!” I protested, stomping my foot

“Are you watching for mom?” was all that she said. I couldn’t do anything except stand guard as she opened present after present. Finally, when she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we traded places.

My heart hammered so hard that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. Tina reminded me to be careful so I wouldn’t tear the wrapping paper.

After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones (耳机) for my stereo!” I exclaimed as I pulled them out of the box.

As a diffident 10-year-old, I’d sworn (发誓) off swimming for life the day my friend pushed me into our neighbourhood pool. The incident only made me fear it more. So when my husband turned out to be a so-called ‘water baby’, it felt ironic to say the least. My husband belongs to the competitive swimmer, cliff jumper and extreme water-sport lover. Me? I panic when the force of the shower is stronger than usual.

In those early days, we were both eager to please and forgive each other ‘sf avorite hobbies. For our honeymoon, we chose the Maldives-fashionable, beachy and romantic in equal measure. My husband knew about my aquaphobia (恐水症), but assumed its cause was a lack of experience in the water.

So, on the second day of our trip, bored of snorkelling (浮潜) by himself, he convinced me to sit backseat on a jet-ski while he drove. Five minutes later, the high-speed equipment upended and we went headfirst into the Indian Ocean. A sudden stillness as the water formed a wall overhead with only the sharp reflection of the sun providing light; shock, disorientation (迷失方向), panic; and finally, when our life jackets bounced us back to safety, a feeling of fast breathlessness and many pools of tears. My husband jumped back on the vehicle in a flash while attempting to keep me calm and pull me back on as well. Once back on firm ground, I swore off water activities for good.

Some might think a one-off sudden incident like this would, in time, fade from memory. But later trips and water meets only strengthened my standpoint. I madly prayed to the gods when our private houseboat met rough waters during a stay at Capri, Italy. And on a trip to a famous spa in the Himalayas, I laid the blame for this funny fear on a previous life where I’d drowned.
