Yesterday, I needed to withdraw 3000 dollars at the bank that I intended to use for home decorations. When I arrived at the bank, I saw that it was packed with people. I took a token and joined the queue.

As I was waiting, I noticed an old woman getting off a taxi. She entered the bank with a walking stick in hand. I could tell that she was having difficulty for her hands were shaking violently. So I approached her, took a receipt, and filled it out for her. After that, I also helped her get a token, so she could deposit her money. She thanked me and stood not far from me.

The queue was very long. After what seemed ten minutes, she looked anxious. I offered to exchange my token with her, but she refused politely. Having waited for nearly half an hour, it was my turn. I withdrew my money and waited to see if the old lady needed any more help. During the time, we chatted for a while. she told me she had intended to deposit three thousand dollars, which was all her savings.

After 20 minutes, it was her turn. However, it was at that time that she realized that she had lost the money she had intended to deposit! She searched around but found nothing. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to compose herself and call her son for help. She couldn’t find his number among her contacts because she was so discouraged. I helped her called her son but the problem at hand was still the lost money. She didn’t know what to do, and I could sense she was in desperate need of assistance. At the same time, her name was repeated in the hall. If she missed the turn, it meant she would wait another long time.

Mary looked at the store window longingly. There was nothing that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll. It was 29.9. Unluckily, Mary didn't even have the 95 cents, so she let out a deep sigh and continued walking home.

As she crossed the street, she thought about doing her brother's housework, cleaning the floor and washing the dishes all months to earn money, but even then she would have only eleven dollars. Suddenly, something small and pink in the snow caught her eyes. Mary walked over and picked it up from the snow. It was a beautiful wallet. She opened the wallet and found a thick pile of folded green bills and a woman's driver's license. Mary put the wallet into her bag quickly. She turned around and walked back.

Mary's heart beat fast as she entered the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right. As she got to the Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grabbed one and walked toward the checkout.

As Mary was waiting to pay, her mobile phone rang. Mary looked around, startled (吓了一跳). It was her grandma. Mary's heart was suddenly filled with love and warmth when she thought of her. She put the doll down and answered the phone.

"Hi, Grandma! I'm going to be a little bit late tonight…. Alright…I love you, too." Mary left the store and walked all the way to 301West Street.

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on neighbouring farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious disagreement in forty years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with small misunderstand and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning, there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. Perhaps you have few jobs here and there. Could help you?

“Yes,” said John. “I do have a job for you. Look across the small stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor. In fact, it’s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow (草地) between us and he took   his bulldozer (推土机) there and now there is creek between us. Well, he may have done this to annoy me but I’ll do better. See that pile of wood by the barn (谷仓)? I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot-high fence—so I won’t need to see his place anymore.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and hole-digger and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job, John’s eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped.

Eric was a very honest and hardworking student. He had entered a new school recently, so he had no friends yet. One Monday morning, he was nearly late for school because his family attended a wedding and reached home late the night before. Hurriedly, he even had no time for breakfast.

At school, Eric was starving to death and could not concentrate on anything but wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Eric quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, only to find that he had forgotten to take money since he was in such a hurry in the morning. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but in vain.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on the grassland in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Henry. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very rude boy who regarded everyone else as a failure. But Eric was a newcomer, he didn’t know much about Henry.

When he approached Henry and asked whether he could borrow some money for his lunch, Henry laughed at once and said, “I didn’t know you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Henry laughed out so loud that other kids also made fun of Eric. Embarrassed and angry, Eric said nothing and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

When he reached the bench, he saw something lying under it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it belonged to Henry, as he remembered Henry showing it to his friends and telling them that his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.
