【推荐3】Why you’re more creative in coffee shops
Some of the most successful people in history have done their best work in coffee shops
A sweet spot of noise and crowds
Some of us stick in our earbuds as soon as we sit down to work in a public setting. But scientists have known for years that background noise can benefit our creative thinking. A study showed that a modest level of surrounding noise in a place like a cafe can actually promote your creative output.
Air of informality
The typical coffee-shop user might be a lone worker struggling with a creative effort. However, experts say these cafe settings can also benefit work groups who are brainstorming. There is a formal air when gathering on digital meeting platforms.
One thing that can make working from home or the office feel boring is the visual environment. Often we sit in the same chair and look at the same four walls all day long. In the coffee shops, people come and go. The daylight changes.
A.Visual variety |
B.The birthplace of countless great works |
C.The pleasant smells of coffee and food vary |
D.Not all kinds of noisy surroundings are bad for your creativity |

Currently, we have a University team monitoring the global situation and will issue further advice to our students regarding any potential study impacts, as information becomes available.
If you or your studies are impacted and you need to contact Deakin for support or advice, please contact Student Central. You can also visit the Student Life blog, where a dedicated page has been published to provide further updates.
This is an emerging and constantly changing matter, with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updating their travel advice to China to reflect the current situation in Wuhan, where transport in and out of the city has been halted. DFAT has advised people travelling to reconsider their need to travel to Wuhan.
The Smartraveller site provides recommendations for people travelling from a destination with reported cases, or for those who arrive in Australia feeling unwell. Australia’s Chief Medical Officer has provided an update on the virus and the measures being put in place by the Australian Government. The Chief Medical Officer advises that while there have been some deaths linked to this novel coronavirus, people should not be overly alarmed. There are no confirmed cases of the virus in Australia at this point.

【推荐2】Come to build robots!
Robots are fun to play with, but did you know that they are equally fun to build? Don’t worry, it’s easier than you may think. You don’t have to know lots about electronics or be a genius at engineering to have a go at creating your own robot. There are lots of simple kits (配套原件) and resources available that make it easy to build a robot in your own home, and if you don’t feel confident enough to have a go at home, there are plenty of clubs that offer courses in robot-building for young people.
◇Why to build?
“Creating a robot teaches you in great about how it is put together and how it works, “says Steve Hubbard, of Robot Fun, which hosts robotics master classes for teens in Suffolk. “As you build and test a robot, you also learn how to fix it when things go wrong, as they always do.” Building and programming a robot is a practical application of science and engineering and a great way of learning how to solve all sorts of problems. You don’t need any special skills. If you can build with Lego or draw a line, you can build and program a robot.
◇How to start?
Matthew Applegate runs the Creative Computing Club in Ipswich, Suffolk. He says, “The Lego Robots kits are amazing. You can use cardboard, glue sticks and string to make a prototype (雏形).’’ Some kits can be expensive but there are ways to build your robots using things around the house. You can build an arm with cardboard, straws and string, adding it to a low-cost kit.
Building robots is really great. It isn’t easy at first, but when you get better, you will be surprised how much you can do. Come to get your first robot kit and make it whirr into life!
