San Francisco has some of the best restaurants anywhere — and one of the most unique, the top pizza restaurant in the city, is also one of the first to be owned and operated totally by deaf people.
Melody and Russell Stein opened the place in 2011. Their 900-degree wood-fired oven (炉) is the best they could find, and so is every ingredient, from sauce to sausage, to cheese, some of which come from Italy. “We also make it in-house,” said Melody. “And if that doesn’t make you hungry, I don’t know what will,” added Russell.
And for the customers who show up there night after night, food is only part of the experience. Unlike other restaurants, noise isn’t a problem, and neither is communication; pointing at the menu works just fine. And you can even phone in a takeout order. A green light on the wall signals an incoming call. An operator picks it up, and translates your order in sign language by a special TV. But this is about a lot more than serving hungry customers.
Tracy Smith, a reporter, asked Melody, “How important is it to you to have an all-deaf staff?” “Oh, it’s very important,” she replied. “If a hearing person, say, doesn’t get on well here, they can find a job tomorrow, while all the deaf people here have to look for years and still can’t find a job. That’s when I decided I would have a totally deaf team, even if they have no work experience.”
Melody comes from a restaurant-owning family from Hong Kong, and she met Russell at Gallaudet University.
Now they’re looking to franchise (获得特许经销权), with a little help from the Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD). It’s a good investment (投资), says CSD’s Brandi Rarus.
Rarus said, “People often think that deaf people don’t have much to offer, or are less valuable, or less worthy in some ways. But when you come to this place, you see that’s not true.”

Unlike typical American suburbs where houses have driveways and a garage, this community isn’t banning cars but you will not be able to park at home, and you may not want to drive at all.
Karres en Brands is a Dutch design company that is working with the Danish firm Adept on this new community that will have 7,000 homes and 5,000 office spaces. The new planned development will have schools, stores and offices that residents can walk or bike to on the green loops (圈) that connect the neighborhoods with public spaces.
The parking structures will feature ground level community spaces like gyms and indoor farming. These parking areas will also store and collect energy for the community and as demand for parking spaces decrease, the developers expect them to evolve into new structures.
Oberbillwerder will be an exciting urban area that will be built around the existing landscape and will include a series of canals in low lying areas. The water system will become one of the central qualities of the new community. This combines nature instead of blocking or changing it to fit a traditional neighborhood. The community will also be energy neutral and use the most environmental technologies including reusing waste water, green roofs, and farming space for residents who want to grow their own food.
The developers expect to break ground in 2025 and the entire project is expected to be completed by 2040 according to Fast Company. While most people will be driving electric cars by then, this urban plan is more about a more natural use of space and better quality of life rather than just about reducing greenhouse gases from car emissions.

Napping spaces are nothing new; places to rest are already set up in other big cities in the world. But the idea would appear to work well with the culture of Spain, where people traditionally take an afternoon nap, called siesta.
The Madrid nap space recently opened with 19 beds. People can use them by the minute or by the hour, and they can also choose either a private or shared room. An hour of napping inside a private room costs about $15.
Siesta &Go provides all bedding, clean nightshirts and other materials. Nippers can request to be woken up when their time is up. It also offers areas to work, with armchairs, newspapers and coffee for those not wishing to sleep.
Philip Marco is one happy customer. Marco says he gets tired during the day because of hard work. He says a siesta is the perfect way to build up energy. “I come for about 30 minutes or something like that. That is usually enough for me to be full of energy.”
While many Spanish people love their naps, others like Carlos Villarroja say they are just too busy to keep the tradition. “It’s a Spanish tradition, but I think it’s more of a legend (传说) than a tradition. Because of the lifestyle and the working hours, we have very little free time for a siesta at least during the week.”
But many health experts believe there is evidence that taking a short nap can be very good for the body and mind. Scientific studies show that taking a siesta can also prevent illness and lower blood pressure.

I find myself wondering what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theater” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many Westerners would be unhappy by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we often have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it’s now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it’s like a dinner party where my taste buds(味蕾)and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
1. What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China?A.It has a history of over 1,000 years. | B.It serves people with many kinds of foods. |

UNESCO experts gathering in Morocco this week decided that the simple French bread — made only of flour, water, salt, and yeast — was worth U.N. recognition, after France’s culture ministry warned of a “continuous drop” in the number of traditional bakeries (烘焙坊), with some 400 closing every year over the past half century.
The UN cultural agency’s chief, Audrey Azoulay said, “The decision honors more than just bread; it recognizes the ‘graceful skills of bakers’ and ‘a daily ritual (仪式)’.” Azoulay added, “It is important that such baking knowledge and social practices can continue to exist in the future.”
With the bread’s new status (地位), the French government said it planned to create a baguette day, called the “Open Bake house Day”, to connect the French better with their heritage. Bakers in France seemed proud, if unsurprised. “Of course, it should be on the list because the baguette symbolizes the world. It’s universal,” said Asma Farhat, a baker at Julien’s Bakery. “If there’s no baguette, you can’t have a proper meal. In the morning you can toast it, for lunch it’s a sandwich, and then it accompanies dinner.”
Despite the decline in traditional bakery numbers, France’s 67 million people still buy baguettes at a variety of sales points, including in supermarkets. According to France’s “Bread Observatory”, the French eat 320 baguettes of one form or another every second. The problem is, observers say, that they can often be poor in quality. “It’s very easy to get bad baguette in France. It’s the traditional baguette from the traditional bakery that is in danger. It’s about quality not quantity,” said one local resident, Marine Fourchier.
1. Why did UNESCO’s decide to add the French bread to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list?A.Because it has a long history. | B.Because it is made of simple materials. |
C.Because it is in danger of disappearing. | D.Because it is made in traditional bakeries. |

Taxes ranged from 1 to 2 cents. For a 2-liter bottle of soda, that comes out to between 67 cents to $1.30 extra in taxes.
“While prior (先前的) studies have looked at the impact of soda taxes, they usually studied one city at a time. This new study looked at the overall effect of the taxes on several cities to get an idea of what might happen if these taxes were more widespread — or enlarged to the state or national level,” says Scott Kaplan, an economics professor and the study’s lead author.
Kaplan and his co-workers found that prices for sugary drinks went up by 33.1% and purchases (购买量) went down by basically the same amount. So when people had to pay more for sugary drinks, they reduced their purchases — the effect was large and continued.
As Kaplan notes, “Sugary drinks make up a quarter of all the added sugar we see in the average adult American diet. And that’s a really big amount.” Jennifer Pomeranz, a professor at the School of Public Health, says, “Taxes that aim sugary drinks are good public health policy because these drinks have no nutritional (营养的) value, but they are linked with diet-related diseases. Too much added sugar is linked to a host of poor health outcomes, including overweight and heart disease.” Last month, WHO called on countries to increase taxes on sugary drinks as a way to promote healthier diets.
Today, the sugary drink industry’s strategy of offering consumers more choices with less sugar is working, and nearly 60% of drinks sold have zero sugar. The calories that people get from drinks have decreased to the lowest level in decades.
1. What’s the difference between the new study and the prior ones?A.The range. | B.The challenge. | C.The expense. | D.The benefit. |

NEW DELHI—Just a few years ago. Mala was a typical middle-class Indian housewife. She cooked, cleaned and looked after her two small children.
Last year, her life took a tragic turn. Her husband died of AIDS; she was found out HIV-positive (艾滋病病毒检验呈阳性反应) and her mother-in-law took her children away from her, saying they would get the disease. “When friends dropped for a visit, she would introduce me, saying, ‘She is my son’s widow. She has AIDS,’” said Mala. AIDS is now described as “explosive (炸药)”around the world. A study of a hospital in the port city of Durban in South Africa, where the world's biggest and Africa's first AIDS conference opened last Sunday, found that almost half the beds in medical wards (病房) were occupied by AIDS patients.
South Africa has one of the world's fastest growing HIV infections (传染), with 1,700 people infected daily, adding to the 4.3 million, or 10 percent of its population, living with HIV. Until now, Asia has been more successful in holding the AIDS virus (病毒) than Africa, where the disease has killed about 12 million people .
AIDS is now threatening to surround many of Asia's poverty-stricken countries. Countries in Asia, such as Cambodia, and Thailand, have HIV infection speeds over 1 percent. But the low speeds hide huge numbers of affected people, because of the population base.
In India, for example, 3.7 million are infected, more than in any other country except South Africa. In China, an estimated 500,000 people, mainly drug users, live with HIV/AIDS. Gordon Alexander, a senior advisor for UN AIDS in India, estimates (估计) that the number hit by AIDS in Asia will climb about eight million over the next five years from about six million.
In many Asian countries, the battle against HIV is a social and cultural one against public discussion of sexual health put a nationwide media campaign into action to limit the speed of HIV through unsafe sex. Brenton Wong, an official for Singapore's Action for AIDS, says the actual HIV incidence in the city state of 3.9 million people is at least eight times higher than official data.” Shame and deny is still very, very common so people are afraid to get tested and many times won't even tell their families if they test positive,” said Wong.

Since Owain had ADHD, the family have taken him to see doctors to help him deal with everyday life tasks. Owain also tried the medicine, but had to stop after the drugs worsened his pain. With ADHD continuing to influence Owain’s school performance, Kelcey was hoping for any other choice. Help came in the end from what seemed very strange — a computer game called EndeavorRx.
EndeavorRx was the first such game to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the treatment of ADHD in children. Now it’s only available on prescription (处方) from doctors. When doctors prescribe it, the child’s parents are sent a link that is needed before the game can be played. Though EndeavorRx looks very similar to other games, it’s been developed to improve areas of the brain that play a key role in attention function.
EndeavorRx trains a child with ADHD to do several things together and take no notice of things that take their attention away. It also measures their performance and changes the difficulty of the game in real time according to the user’s needs. Eddie Martucci, CEO of Akili, says, “These can be very difficult to get through traditional means like taking a pill. But it turns out that playing EndeavorRx can directly make parts of the brain function active.”
Fellow UK scientist Lee Chambers says while the use of such video games in the treatment of mental health conditions is still in the early stages, it appears to have potential (潜力). “Playing a game can avoid the feeling like we are being tested,” he says. “These types of mental health games can follow changes in the information that they collect over time. Given this, they have the potential to improve people’s health in a new way.”
