But why did the interviewer pick me instead of them?

Finally, curiosity pushed me to ask the interviewers soon     5     we became colleagues. The reason     6     I succeeded was that I appeared confident but humble, responsible and communicative. They judged people not only by their academic certificates,     7     by their qualities and abilities. I happened to be the right person.

It was only at the time of my successful interview that I finally understood the famous saying — “You decide where you go.” It has certainly helped me make a giant step closer     10     my dream of graduating with prospects for the future.

Your final grade for the course is B. A     1     (respect) grade, far superior to the “Gentleman's C”. But you are probably     2     (disappoint) at not doing better. Disappointment. It's the staff bad dreams are made of dreams of     3     (fail), inadequacy, loss of position and good repute. You've grown up in a society     4     winning is not the most important thing—it's the only thing. My purpose in writing is to put your disappointment     5     perspective by considering exactly what your grade mean and doesn't mean.

Your grade     6    (simple) means the level of proficiency at which you have successfully completed a specific course of study. It is does not represent a judgment of your basic ability or your character. Courage, kindness,     7    (wise), good humor—these are the important characteristics of our species.     8    (fortunate), they are not part of our curriculum. Your B is a price tag on a garment that is quite separate from the living,     9    (breathe) human being underneath.

Remember: academic work is a narrow, neatly defined highway compared to the unmapped rolling country you will encounter after you leave school. What you have learned may help you find your way about at first. Later on you will have to shift to yourself,     10    (locate) goals and opportunities in the same fog that hampers us all as we move toward the future.

Free to soar

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing in the heady atmosphere above the earth. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check.

1     blowing away with the wind, the kites arose to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the awkward tail kept dragging them,     2    (face)upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! I want to be free!” The kites soared beautifully    3     they had to resist the imposed restriction of the string. Finally, one of them succeeded in     4    (break)loose. “Free at last.” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.” Yet freedom from restraint simply put     5     under the control of an unsympathetic breeze. “Free at last” fluttered ungracefully to the ground and    6    (land) in a mash of wells with its string against a bead bush. It was free to lie powerless in the dirt,     7    (blow) helplessly along the ground, and to stick lifeless against the first obstacle.

We may be reluctant to admit    8     we are like kites sometimes. Life gives us adversity, restrictions and rules     9     we can grow and gain strength from. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the rules and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.

Let us each rise to the great heights life has in store for us. Recognizing that some of the restraints that we    10     be annoyed at are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve.
