The world itself is becoming much smaller because of the use of modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it     1    (be) hundreds of years ago. But it has brought new problems. One of the     2     (big) problems is pollution. Pollution comes in many     3     (form). We see it, smell it, drink it and we even hear it.

Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious     4    there were not so many people. When the land     5    (use) up or the river was dirty in     6     place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now     7    (slow) polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world. Water pollution     8    (kill) our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily. Many countries are making rules     9     (fight) pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and putting dirty smoke     10     the air.

The Palace Museum is becoming waste-free as the 720,000-square-meter structure has managed     1     (reduce) the number of rubbish bins to 110 sets in areas open to the public. This is a decrease from 310 sets     2     (record) in January 2020, when a zero-waste campaign     3     (launch), said the museum.

While protecting features of the six-century-old historical relic, the action also helps visitors and tourists get into     4     habit of creating less waste. Up to now, four types of rubbish bins have been equipped following Beijing’s regulations on the management of household waste. Cleaning staff also check them to make sure all rubbish is     5     (correct) sorted, which is later transported to different destinations for disposal (处理). The museum also recycled more than 32,000 plastic     6     (bottle) to make cultural and creative products between June 2021 and October 2023,     7     (mean) a reduction in carbon emission by 931 kilograms.

By launching the campaign, the Palace Museum is taking a careful, science-based way to waste management. The target is to minimize the production of waste     8     needs to be buried or burned and bring the amount of such waste as close     9     zero as possible.

So far, about 3,000 museum staff members, 40,000 tourist guides, and 21 million visitors     10     (participate) in the campaign.

With the     1     (develop) of industry, air pollution is getting more and more serious. In Beijing, many people suffer different kinds of illnesses because     2     air pollution.

Shared bike companies discourage the use of removable child seats on their bikes and warn that users must take full responsibility for any accidents     1    (involve) a child seat.

The child seats, which can be attached     2    different brands of shared bikes, popped up in online marketplaces with advertisements claiming the products are safe,     3    (reliance) and easily attached and removed from the bikes. But several bike-sharing companies including Ofo, Mobike and Mingbikes released statements saying their user agreements     4    (express) forbid carrying extra passengers on the bikes because of safety risks, and warning that they assume no legal responsibility if a violation leads to     5    accident.

Ofo said its on-street personnel,     6    mostly shift bikes between locations depending on demand, will attempt to persuade bike users to remove child seats if they spot them. If     7    (persuasive) fails, employees are instructed to contact the police, it said.

A Mobike employee in the public relations department who asked not     8    (name) said the company has been contacting online shopping websites that sell the detachable child seats, including Taobao, and asking them to remove the product because of safety concerns.

“We     9    (negotiate) with Taobao and other shopping websites to remove the child seats from the     10    (shelf), but the initiative is in the hands of the websites,” the employee said.

Taobao said negotiations with Mobike are ongoing.
