Every neighborhood needs a bookstore. One inspired woman took this mission to heart and opened her dream bookstore. Bronx Bound Books is a community project on wheels, ensuring everyone in the neighborhood has a bookstore nearby.
Ever since DeVaughn was a child, she dreamed of opening a bookstore. Adopted by her grandmother, she spent many childhood hours exploring bookshops. “My grandmother was an educator in the South Bronx,” DeVaughn explained. “She read to the people in our community who couldn’t read. Some people’s lives depended on the information she gave them.”
Although her grandmother had passed away, DeVaughn never forgot her dream. She knew her thought was important as the nearest bookstore was one hour away. It was hard for local people to get books. After she was introduced to the idea of a mobile bookshop, she soon wanted to put it into practice.
DeVaughn understood that the community was the most important aspect to ensure the success of this project, so she began by reaching out to friends and neighbors.“Your community is the most valuable resource when you start a small business,”she said.“If you’re determined enough to let them know what you want, they’ll try their best to make it happen for you.”She collected used books from friends and good neighbors and received a small business loan. Soon she had a bus, loads of books, and kindness from lots of warm-hearted helpers.
DeVaughn soon realized that she was making a huge impact on the community. Now she has plans to partner with schools and book fairs, and even get a second bus. Not only is DeVaughn inspiring people in her community to purchase their cherished books and enjoy reading, but her own family also benefit from her encouraging action.

He began to wonder what happened to the soap (肥皂) in the bathroom once he left the hotel. There was no way that it could be left in the room for someone else to use. Curious, he asked the hotel manager and was told that the used soap was thrown away and replaced.
Shawn could not sleep that night. A quick Internet search informed him that there were about 4.6 million hotel rooms in America. If 60 per cent of these were used every night, over one million bars of soap would be thrown away every day. Was this really necessary? The young man went on to read reports about the importance of handwashing. He learnt that thousands of children were dying every day from diseases related to bad hygiene (卫生). If the children washed their hands with soap, the number of deaths could be reduced by half. The following day, Shawn left his well-paid job. He approached the Holiday Inn Hotel in Orlando and asked if he could take away their used soap. He transported it to his home, where he and his relatives began to break it down, so it could be used again.
Shawn started his charity. Clean The World, and began distributing (分发) his recycled soap to children all over the world. His another big task was to contact other hotels, so he could take away their used soap. He found that he was really doing the hotels a big favour. Not only was he putting their soap to good use, but he was also preventing millions of bars of used soap from ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋地) every year. His charity was able to raise money by charging the hotels for this service. In return, the hotels could tell everyone they were part of an amazing new charity.

Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition (作曲) with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and foil of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

And they use what they have.”
About 30 percent of food is wasted in the US, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Nearly all of that food — 95 percent — is simply thrown away, leading to an average loss of 38 million tons of food per year. But hunger in America isn’t a supply problem — there’s more than enough food to meet demand. And that doesn’t sit well with a community-minded chef like Sterling.
“I’m here to feed people but I’m also here to educate,” Sterling said. “There’s no reason we should not be helping people — especially children.” That passion inspired Sterling to join other chefs who volunteer with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign focusing on ending childhood hunger in the U.S. through programs like school breakfast and summer meals.
Of course, no one should ever grow up hungry and yet more than 11 million children in the United States live in food insecure families. Children who regularly miss meals can face an increased risk of a range of medical conditions, including chronic illnesses. They’re also more likely to struggle at school — and problems can last for a long time even after their food insecurity problems are solved. But hunger is a solvable problem and today, according to the organization No Kid Hungry, one-third fewer kids live with hunger in America than when it began nine years ago.
With the support of its long-time partner Citi, No Kid Hungry has provided more than 150 million meals for kids in need. And this year Citi is once again matching all donations up to $100,000 — enough to provide one million additional meals.

When Ayers went to make a payment toward the $283 balance for her family’s Christmas gifts at Walmart, her money was refused. According to a Walmart employee, a woman had paid a part of Ayers’ bill after seeing her shopping in the store. The unknown woman also left Ayers a touching note, which left the mother of two in tears.
Ayers, whose sons are 11 and 3, says the stranger’s great generosity came at the perfect time for her family. Before the anonymous payment was made, Ayers had worried she would not be able to get her kids’ toys in time for Christmas.
Ayers is still looking for the woman who helped pay for their Christmas gifts for her kids. She took a picture of her receipt with the headline: This stranger paid 4 gifts for us. I wish I could thank her for helping give our kids a Merry Christmas!
For thousands of families like Ayers’, feeling this financial pressure around Christmastime is nothing new. These families who still have a roof over their heads and food on their tables often slip through the cracks — they can afford all the necessities, but the “extras” are harder to come by. Considering that Americans are estimated to spend $882 on Christmas gifts this year, it makes sense that a family with a few financial problems would have a hard time filling the stockings for their kids.
Realizing how common this Christmas problem really is makes Ayers’ story even more special. These random acts of kindness around the holidays, often from nameless strangers, can determine what a family’s Christmas looks like. Christmas may not be all about the material stuff, but for families, and especially for kids, it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.
