One day, 8-year-old Mary and her 10-year-old sister, Jane, had to go to a beauty salon (美容院) on Clinton Street to have their hair cut. Mary’s dad asked them to reach there by themselves on the public bus. Mary and Jane had a 5:00 appointment (预约). Their dad couldn’t go with them because he worked until 6:00 pm.

Their dad told Mary to wait outside the school at 4:30 pm for Jane so they could take the bus to the beauty salon together. Then he would pick them up at the salon after he got off work. Mary was nervous, thinking, “What if someone tries to follow us? What if we miss the stop? I have never ridden the bus without my dad before.” Her dad took a look at her and said, “You’ll be just fine. Listen to your sister and help her look out for your stop.” Then he gave Jane some money and went off to work.

All day at school, Mary kept looking at the clock, afraid of the end of the school day. On the other hand, Mary’s dad was also nervous. The whole time in his office he kept looking at the clock, thinking about his daughters. He actually left work at 4:00 pm that day. But after reaching Mary’s school, he considered it a good chance for them to overcome fear in life. He decided to stay in his car to see whether his girls could get on the bus safely.

When it was 4:30 pm, Mary went to the school gate and waited for Jane. Jane got there in a few minutes, and they walked quietly to the bus stop. A few high school teenagers and a woman stood at the bus stop. Jane asked the woman if the bus stopping there was the Number 2 heading toward Clinton Street.

In common with many other women, I was crazy about shopping. Whenever I came across something I liked, I had a strong desire to take it home. As a result, I spent a lot of money buying piles of things that I didn’t really need. My husband sometimes tried to persuade me to buy less and live a simpler life, but I wouldn’t listen. To me, shopping was more than a hobby. It made me delighted and relaxed.

However, one day when I stayed at home looking around my house, I realized that my own cherished knickknacks (小摆件) had become dust collectors. My treasures had overtaken my home, the furniture was closing in on me, and I had piles of clothing. Some of them had never been worn before. My home had become a prison instead of a heaven. It was then that I realized my hobby had become a sweet burden for me. It’s high time that I should make a change!

At first, making the decision proved easier than carrying it out. I’d come home from work, stand in the doorway, and gaze at my paintings, favorite chair, and dolls. I would delicately hold and admire a fine tea set that, until now, I had long stopped noticing on the shelf. My doll collection was the biggest trouble. Getting rid of these toy babies I had purposely chosen and lovingly displayed on shelves for so many years felt like a family betrayal (背叛) Even though the dolls had “certificates of authenticity (防伪证明), and some were signed by the artists, it didn’t feel right to sell them. Having no idea what to do with these dolls, I turned to my husband for help.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place.

Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where your only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.

I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large and expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.

I then requested the shop assistant selling me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”

As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remember my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.

I waited in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if they will show kindness to me. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

注意:1. 续写的短文词数应为100左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

That was when I saw a young mother with her two kids.
