It was a lovely spring morning. The sky was blue, the sun was out, and the air was warm. As I drove along the curvy roads, I saw thousands of wild flowers in bloom and some volunteers picking up trash along the side of the road. I smiled as I saw them doing some “Spring Cleaning” for our Mother Earth and my mind was cast back to the spring day long long ago.
When my children were younger, we used to walk a small trail around the lake near our home. One spring day, my daughter and I noticed much trash was lying along the trail. The next day we brought a big trash bag with us and started to pick up the trash along the way slowly. There were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line, and even an old deserted shoe. We picked up each one and even fished a few pieces of garbage out of the water. By the time we had circled the lake, the bag was nearly full.
Tired but happy, we finally put the bag in an empty trash can. Before we headed home, we took one last look at the lake. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were smiling at us at that moment.
I realized that though environmental pollution is still serious, the truth is that every time we stop to pick up a single piece of trash, it will make a difference. So from then on I planned to take further action to keep the environment clean.

Molly was a single mother of two. She was new here so she didn’t interact much with her neighbors. However, she’d heard a lot of rumors (谣言) about her 82-year-old neighbor, Mr. Palmer. Some neighbors said he was spiritually sick. However, when she first saw Mr. Palmer, she did feel he was strange with his lonely lifestyle.
One day, Molly ran into Mr. Palmer. He was standing by a signal light and glancing around even after the light went green. Molly realized he needed help to cross the street, so she approached him. “Mr. Palmer. I’m Molly. I’ve only lately moved here. Can I help you?” she asked gently. The old man smiled at her. “Oh, Molly! Yes! Would you mind helping me cross the street?” “Of course not, Mr. Palmer,” she smiled. As they reached the other end of the street, Mr. Palmer thanked her over and over again. After that, Molly realized he wasn’t a strange man but just a lonely soul misjudged by everyone.
Days later, Molly got a new job and was just on a trial period, so she was too busy to babysit her kids, Ben aged 6, who had got epilepsy (癫痫) and Adam aged 4, when she was sometimes on the night shift.
One day, when she was returning home, she noticed Mr. Palmer sitting on a resting chair on his doorway. She stopped by and greeted him. During the chat, Mr. Palmer said he suffered from insomnia (失眠症), and only slept late in the morning for 5 to 6 hours at a time. Molly figured she could ask Mr. Palmer for help to babysit her kids while she was on her night shifts. When she asked him about it, he was happy to help.
When Mr. Palmer arrived at Molly’s house to babysit the kids, they got along well with him. Molly was relieved to see her children happy around Mr. Palmer each time and thought her kids were in safe hands while she left for work.

Andrea Lessing is a relatively new employee at Goodwill. Her job is sorting donated stuff. She has been working the job for about a month and a half and is already not surprised by some of the stuff she found.
People donate all kinds of things to Goodwill, and sometimes don’t always remember to empty out their pockets or purses before handing them over. It turns out that they can sometimes accidentally “donate” their cash too.
While going through a couple of sweaters, Andrea felt something extra heavy. At first, she thought that it was a pile of books, but then realized it was something more valuable. Wrapped inside the sweaters, she found piles of envelopes filled with $100 bills. All counted up, the money was worth $42,000. And no, the money wasn’t fake either. It was completely real!
Andrea, who’s also a mom, decided to do the right thing and report what she found. Thanks to identifying documents also left with the sweaters, the employees were able to trace the money back to its owner.
Normally, most people donate to Goodwill without leaving their identities. Or they at least try to keep their personal identifying information away from the clothing they donate. But in this instance, along with the forgotten money, the person who donated the sweater also forgot some documents that included their name.
For Andrea, returning the money was a no-brainer. She wants to try her best to put out positive energy. She also says that she was motivated by doing right for her daughter and being the best mom she can be.
Andrea explained, “ I have a daughter. I love her very much, and you can’t put a price on my daughter, and I know what could be risked if stealing that money. I do believe that if you do something good, it will come back to you. ”

I Am That Change
After 5 years abroad, I came to India, which is my native country. That was the time when private organizations, shopping malls, restaurants were emerging in our area.
One day my sister took me to the nearby shopping mall. We bought some clothes and the bill we made was INR 1,599. There was a huge line at the billing counter and we stood in the line. Then I noticed that a lady made her bill INR 499. So she gave INR 500 but she didn't get her one rupee in return. Surprisingly, she was okay with it. She didn't ask for her money (1 rupee).
Now it was our turn to pay. My sister gave INR 1,600. We weren't different. We did get nothing in return. But unlike the previous lady, I asked for my one rupee. They gave me an annoying look and said, “madam, we don't have any change. Leave it. It's just a rupee. There is nothing you can buy with that.”
I was so annoyed with their answer and said, “Now give me my 1,600 rupees, I will give you exactly how much I should spend on my things.” And I gave exactly INR 1,599. Everyone around that billing counter made a dramatic scene by abusing me that I was selfish, stingy(吝啬的), etc. I didn’t mind anything and left the mall.
Outside the mall, I saw a random old woman begging in the burning sun. I gave that one rupee to her and also gave a couple of notes to her. And I noticed many people who left their one rupee for the shopping mall, ignoring that old woman who was begging just outside that mall.
I couldn't sleep that night. I was saddened by those acts. How come people don't give their valueless one rupee to the beggars who value that one rupee so much?
Not one man but everyone who visited the malls left one rupee there. If around 1,000 people visit that mall per day, it gets 1,000 rupees per day for free. I wanted to make some changes in the society, at least in our area.
